I actually just watched a documentary about the tunnel rats in Vietnam and they said the same things that when there was a VC close they had like this spicy musty body odor that was specific to them or they would see fresh pile of turds and know that they were close. I read all kinds of stuff about this from special forces and it's just a common thing that they have a sixth sense to these things.

And the fresh US troops could be smelled by the enemies too. Their soap and laundry soap and mouthwash and the water proofing they put on gear, could all be smelled. I read a book written by a Vietnamese who fought for the NVA, then almost immediately the war was over, he was part of a local government group in the South, and his book was mostly about the vast effort they had to make, rebuilding Vietnam from the ground up. He actually was pretty fair to the US in his book, but he really did not like the French. Like, his statements about them were obviously exaggerations made because of how much he hated them. Anyway, he stated point blank, that the guerillas could smell Americans were upwind of them, and it was half the smell of their clothing, and half the smell of stuff like mouthwash and soap.

Take it from someone who can't smell, Yes! also most what people think is taste is smell. but, some of taste is so overpowered by smell you never get to experience it unless you lose it. I can now identify most aluminium alloy series by taste. Steel tastes too much of iron to be able to.

Not a vet but I can smell rain coming, eyes are super sensitive to movement, and ears are keen to the sounds of movement too. I honestly think we’re slowly evolving out of our hunting instincts and into more self preservation instincts as humans and a few of us have a bloodline of hunters, soldiers, woodsman, or any other work/activity that requires survival skills that are always tinkering on “civil” and “savage” traits.

@@williambigbills-9665 Tbh I think most people can smell rain coming and that sort of thing. It's just that in our modern lives most people haven't learnt that skill or tuned into what that smell is or what it means. In the grand scheme of things humans don't have an amazing sense of smell, but it is a lot better than a lot of people give it credit for. And does serve the purpose of short term weather prediction, and smelling harmful bacteria, that sort of thing.

I wasn’t really close to him because of the age difference, but I would go there and sit with him in dead silence just because. Just a couple years ago he thanked me while he broke down. Time definitely helped. I couldn’t let him take his own life, I just knew from the way he talked, that’s where it was going. He finally shared stories after 2 years of silence. Not sure if the God you speak of is the same as mine... but if it is: the war is not against flesh and blood but principalities, powers and the darkness of this world. In combat, we learned to observe on a much different level than military members that were exposed to the daily activities. You develop hyper vigilance and situational awareness. We later learned that our neurons grew additional dendrites, thanks to years of research from our Vietnam brothers. We are not the same when we return to the states and we never will be. You can’t go to these far away corners of the Earth, use all of your sense and expect to be the same person before your deployment.

that's absolutely wild how the brain grows extra 'branches' so to speak under hyper stressful situations like combat, it's no wonder vets suffer so much when they come home..i imagine it's like the brain thinks it's missing a vital ingredient to survive by just not having to constantly be on your guard, i think it would help if there was a way to get vets into jobs at home that require a lot of situational awareness and the like, something like security or escorting people around

I don't mean to compare my experience to a MoH recipient, but to share a similar story. I remember we had a period that we had to go about 40ish days without showers when I was in the Army. One of our medics left with a guy that got evac'd one afternoon and the medic ended up coming back the next day. He managed to get a shower while he was gone and I remember walking up to greet him and I could smell him clear as day from probably 40 yards away. To me, he smelled like he almost drowned in the perfume section. The smell, though pleasant, was as strong as the smell of a rotting corpse. I teased him about it, but he told me all he had done was taken a normal shower with a bar of soap. That moment made me realize just how bad we must stink. We ended up rotating out of that area a few days later and i still remember getting my first shower afterwards. It was barely above room temperature water, but I thought I was in heaven.

Yep. We went about 3 months in Kuwait without a shower, only “prostitute” baths. For 15 years after leaving, I still had to leave running water on in my house just to hear it. You def have a heightened sense of smell when everyday things are gone, anything with soaps or perfumes can put you in a tailspin for awhile.

My Grandfather was in the Army during WW2 and certain smells would instantly make him double over puking and this was a man who was the embodiment of stoic quiet man who went thru the Liberation of Buchenwald. My Mother is a Marine Vietnam vet and both her and her follow vets all had some very particular smells that would be like flipping a switch in their brains. Now I understand why. Nowadays if I get in a tense situation, I don't get tunnel visioned, instead I see everything in my peripherals and can't turn off my situational awareness. I'll be stuck like that for hours. Feeling like I'm staring through everything but also seeing everything at the same time. I prefer to be out in nature now away from people.

This dude has probably the most badass speech I’ve ever heard. A lot of you have probably heard it too but aren’t recognizing him. He’s the one that said "We don't want war. But if you want war with the United States of America, there's one thing I can promise you, so help me God: Someone else will raise your sons and daughters." Medal of Honor recipient. David Bellavia. BAMF
@Notimportant253

He won a Medal of Honor for a war that was completely void of any. How ironic. Sounds like a real badass, razing cities to the ground, destroying whole civilizations, murdering parents and even kids cause some asshole in a suit at the white house gave him a narrative that reinforced his belief in the supremacy of his own nation. The war in Iraq was America picking up a smaller, insignificant brown country, throwing it against the wall as hard as we could, then trampling it for over a decade before declaring victory and moving on to the next one. Nothing honorable about the politicians who waged the war, the profiteers who instigated it, or the random Joes from Nebraska and Pennsylvania who stupidly signed up to fight for them.

Smell, particularly from Rum was why the British Army gave up on issuing the daily Rum ration to soldiers in Malaya/Malaysia during the Emergency. They discovered that they could be smelled by the Communist enemy and obviously you don't want to give your enemy an unfair advantage against your side. Post Vietnam, the Australian Army was still very conscious of personal smell of individual soldiers and groups of soldiers. Much emphasis was placed on low odour deodorants and insect repellent, so the Aussie summer favourite Aeroguard was a big no no! Cigarettes are another give away. Just some of the things that you learn in the Australian Army Reserve! Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 Reservist '88 to mid 90s.

I'm never able to relax I'm always reading body language, environments, atmosphere. It is kind of a super power once developed but their that ability to read things come problems like sensory issues. I don't like loud bangs or unexpected peripheral movement. Those two things can awaken a monster on the wrong day.
