I Cracked My Carbon Fiber Gravel Bike Wheels (Hunt 35 Hookless)

I was out riding after a bunch of rain and cracked my Hunt 35 hookless... whatever wheels on a pot hole. My fault and thank god I have the hunt wheels warranty. Let me know if you have any questions from the video.

Hunt replaced my alloy wheel in less than a week. Ive broken 7 carbon frames since the 90s. Several carbon wheels got multiple cracks. Shimano carbon. Seat posts. Now back on steel road and gravel. Couldn't be happier. I chased carbon for 30 years. No more. Carbon stays indoors on a Wahoo. Not so far to carry it when it breaks. I dont want carbon for free now. I'm mid 70s. Ride daily 12,000 plus miles a yr. Most on gravel. I need dependable. Carbon hasnt been for me.good luck. I reide 45 mm tubeless Hunt gravel alloys .

I bought a carbon gravelbike some time ago. My first carbon bike. It will be my last too. It's fine. Really. Nice bike. But I'd rather have a cheaper alloy frame. For an amateur like me it's just not worth the extra money. I also bought an extra wheelset: standard DT Swiss alloy wheels. Cheap and durable. It's all I need really.

Yeah I can understand that. Carbon stuff can make you more paranoid while riding for sure.

I've had my Zipp 303s for 7000miles through all sorts of road, gravel, singletrack and bikepacking adventures and not a single issue

Same for my Campagnolo Bora WTO 45s, well over 10,000 miles over terrible Tucson AZ roads, and we're talking about a race wheel running 16c tires. I've hit all kinds of stuff and the wheels still look new. That said, there's a substantial price difference between these and the Hunts. Sorry about the cracked wheel though. Thanks for the video!

If I had a bit more budget at the time, I think I would have landed on 303s as well.

I guess there are so many variables to take into consideration! But I'm not a fan of Hunt wheels, and I live in the UK. I personally think they've done a great marketing job, on what is essentially, a pretty generic cheaply made Chinese wheelset! I have 2 pairs of carbons for off road, some Vittoria and Fulcrum. I'm sensible with the Vittoria, light gravel on 32/35s. The fulcrum I'm running big ass 45 Tundra for more gnarly shit! I've looked at Hunt, their prices are pretty distorted imo, and I'm glad I've steered clear of them! ✌️

That's why I use alu wheels only. DT Swiss and Swiss Side are the best.

I've kind of come back to the mindset too tbh. I love the carbon wheels but probably would buy some premium aluminum wheels doing it over again.

I grew up riding gravel roads in Alabama so I'm very fam with gravel road washboards and puddle holes. The hole you believe was the one that did yr Hunt wheel in was not what I was expecting at all. This hole does not look like it would bust a wheel. Dirt and gravel gives in a way that a pavement pot hole will not.

I had a rear hunt aluminum wheel bend on impact from running low pressure. I try to stay around 40psi now to prevent bottoming out. Good luck.

Yeah I'll probably run bigger tires rather than more pressure but effectivelu just getting more air volume either way

38 tires! There’s your problem right there. Gravel is about creating the right amount of grip that can absorb the rough surfaces. Your carbons are already stiff! All the pros are going bigger. I see several manufacturers bringing out more options above 45. Good Luck.

I hit a pothole road riding Farsport 45 mm wheels on a high speed descent, cracked the front wheel just like yours. Farsport replaced the rim.

That's awesome they replaced it! Seems like more and more companies are doing that. Hunt did replace mine, just took a sec. I'll have a video fully detailing the timelines and process I had to go through before being set back up.

My front Hunt 35 wide wheel blew up on a rocky road. They replaced the rim with 35% off a new one but I have to have it re-laced. Now it sits in my garage unlaced.

With hcare or whatever its called, they did fully replace mine and pay for the service. But yeah I do that same thing. Good thing about getting a wheel built if you don't have the tools is it gives you a chance to connect with a shop and not way too expensive.

So would you buy Hunt wheels again? I’m thinking about upgrading my wheels. Was thinking Hunt or Roval. All I keep hearing is that hunt wheels keep cracking.

I think I would. I would say the crack was my fault and that any carbon wheel would have cracked in that situation. There may be more competition now, but I still think they were one of the best options at the time I picked them up.

Was considering going all carbon wheelset but after a few video's, probably id probably do alloy , streets of Chicago is no bueno , have to ride them to get to gravel riding

I love carbon wheels, but honestly I don't know if it's the game changer other people say it is for me. Regardless of whether it is or not, my allow wheels were great and it was not a must have upgrade.
