Having tried the Cobra One Length irons I decided to modify my own irons based on my findings during my Cobra testing. Here is how I used flightscope to ensure my modifications were playable.

I did this last year, I only cut my 567 down to 8, at first it feels and looks funny with the loft and shortness of the club but once you hit it dead straight and still have the same distance and height you’ll forget how funny it seems at first. People seem to think taking a half in or 1 in of a iron is going to make some huge change in distance. It really doesn’t. 2 in 3 inches off sure that could with a driver would. I’ve been happy with my irons since, always pushed them to the right. Now I go green hunting 200 yards out. When the cobras came out last year I just couldn’t wrap my mind around wanting a longer 89p, I hit those clubs very well and didn’t want to give them up. So I figured I’d just chop my 5&6&7 down and see how it fared, I did not have gapping issues and the still had the same ball height. I gained a lot more control which gave me a lot more confidence.

At the end of last season I had my 5 & 6 irons cut to the 7 iron length. I left the 8 & 9 as standard. My PW,Gap and SW are all the same length. This setup suited my game and I suggest everyone looks at their own requirements and abilities. I'm off 11.8 and I'm more consistent with the longer irons due to the change, so not dissimilar.

i've been using a set for about 6 months like this. i had a custom set of clubs built half one length (one length 3 and 4 hybrids and in the long irons 5,6,7) and standard length (in the short irons 8,9 pw 50 54 58) and it has worked wonders for me. I was always very strong in my short irons and wedges - so i didn't want to change that. but i never used to be able to hit long irons at all. now i regularly spend large amounts of range time hitting shots with my 5 iron. its so consistent for me on the course as well. i think you will love this set

Thanks. This is similar to what I'm planning. I've already got cobra one length 4 and 5 hybrids, the only iron I'm looking at cutting is my 6 iron to match of my 7. But I'm also looking at using a 44" driver and a 5 wood with a 7 Wood shaft too.

I love the idea of the combo set. This is what I should have done last year when I finally upgraded my clubs. I thought about the one length quite a bit, but couldn't come to grips with longer 8,9 or just 9 iron into wedges. Anything 7 iron on back being one length makes TOTAL SENSE.

I have been playing Cobra F9 SL irons for 12 months now ( 5 -GW), and before that I used second hand F7 SL irons. It takes time to adjust to the club flights. The F9 5 iron flies higher than the F7 version and the GW in the F9 seems lower than the F7. The wedge has a high flight, but it is not a huge problem in windy conditions where I live ( south coast OZ) , and the balls stops well on the green. My Cobras are steel shafted. The main issue I found when trying to decide on changing to SL irons was that it was difficult to find a set to trial on the course. Hitting a few in a shop is useless. Buying a full set is a leap of faith if you haven't trialed them , and an expensive exercise if you buy new Stirling or Cobra SL clubs. Recently I found an alternative SL club maker in OZ who makes a good product. I bought a 6 -LW ( excluding SW/ had a spare 56) of the SL-7 clubs and had graphite shafts fitted. Strangely I found the 7 iron length LW a useful around the green! They work well and cost about $60 US each. I have no financial interest in Milford Golf. www.milfordgolf.com.au Shorter shaft length in long irons possibly make it easier to get more centred strikes, which make up for the loss of the expected swing speed by loss of shaft length, giving little if any loss in distance.

Great video, "gap me up"! Four years ago in my second year of playing golf at age 66, I cut my Nike shafts 's into three groups and then dropped 26 strokes off my game. Took the long irons down to 38" for the 4,5, and 6 so that they all matched the 6 iron shaft length; and then 37 and a half inches for the five irons 7 thru gap wedge, and then lengthened my three short wedges to 37 inches. Last year I bought a genuine set of new PinHawk Single Lengths in the same three shaft length groups as the Nike's and played in fifteen tournaments at fifteen different courses, winning two, placing third four times, and fourth twice. Not too bad for a short, fat old man. I shot even par yesterday in the first tournament of the year (came in second), at 71 years old. Grouping the single lengths clubs into three shaft lengths has dramatically improved my confidence in controlling the club face during a full swing. This is a great video, offering a positive suggestion on how to improve your golf game. But don't go out and buy a new set of singe lengths clubs; first cut and lengthen an existing set to see if adjusting the shafts to single-length will actually help your ball striking, especially in the three long irons.

That’s a very interesting experiment! I am not a good golfer I played yesterday and ended my round with an honest 95. I picked up golf again this year after a seven year hiatus for school. I bought a set of Pinhawk single length irons last summer and used them a few times I have found that compared to my TaylorMade rac OS my distances are very comparable, with some distances slightly shorter and other clubs slightly longer. Yesterday I had a pin at 176 yards are use my four iron I rolled the ball right up on the edge of the green about 170 yards which is perfect for my four iron. I thought the longer clubs would give me challenges however, I am able to hit my pitching iron through eight iron the lengths and trajectories that I am accustomed to hitting the TaylorMade rac os clubs. It was difficult to become accustomed to the shorter flight but longer roll of the four and five iron but now I have confidence to know that I will hit the ball straight and roll the ball the distance that I typically hit those clubs. I kept my approach wedge by TaylorMade and my sand wedge in the original lengths but I think that moving those two single length would be fine as well. And as I get older it may be more important as I won’t have to bend over as much LOL! I am not successful with Fairway Woods and instead bought a TaylorMade made rack OS graphite shaft 2 iron. I hit it between 195 and 235 dead straight all day long. I’ve always heard that fairway woods are easier to use than long irons I have not found that to be the case for me. If you’re interested in single length Pinhawk irons with upgrade grips and dampening are about $54 apiece that’s a pretty good price. Give it a try...I was pleasantly surprised perhaps someone else will be helped by these thoughts. I had all of mine made at 6 iron length which is my favorite club. By the way, I still use the TaylorMade six iron! I love that club!

Steve, I had a shop & custom built clubs. Here is an idea I have but have not done it yet. PW-9 same length & lie, 36in. length. 7-8 same length & lie, 37 in., 5-6 same length & lie, 38in., 3-4 iron same length & lie, 39 in. Lie angles progress 1 degree flatter as shaft length increases 1 in. Lies- 64,63,62,61 to start. Only 4 shaft lengths & lie changes. The swing weight would have to be established. If you have a good quality bending machine, golf club measuring gauge, scales & swingweight measuring tool you can do a lot experimenting.

You are correct in that the lofts are different but the 5 iron head would be 7 gram lighter than the 6 and the 4 iron 7 gram lighter than the 5. This potentially means with lighter clubheads you can swing them faster.

I've done this type of idea in a similar but different way. Instead of using PW to 4, I've used Gap to 5 and I've moved the lofts to cover the range that I want to cover - 53 degree in Gap to 22.5 Degree 5 Iron (used the Apex CF-16 last 2 years now just ordered the Mizuno Hot Metal Pros and they are currently being done). The reason I did it this way is that the 5 iron length shaft is the last length that I can consistently hit from a fairway with good accuracy and consistency - and bumping that loft up to a loft between a traditional 4/3 iron gives me that distance 195'ish I'm looking for. All other lofts are chosen to Gap at 15 yards per club - so I have Gap at 110, PW @ 125, 9 @ 140, 8 @ 155, 7 @ 170, 6 @ 185, 5 @ 200. The 5 iron is 38" length. I then use a 4 & 3 hybrids, both cut to 39.5", traditional graphite 3 iron length, to cover the 200 to 230 range - I play the short hybrid at 22.5 degrees and the longer hybrid at 18.5 (I also adjust these hybrids to a slightly upright lie angle to help encourage a natural Draw setup - hitting a fade is always easy but setting these 2 clubs up to naturally draw works for me). The reason I like this approach is that my short hybrid spins at 4500rpms with a decent angle of 45 degrees and the long hybrid spins at 4200rpms with a decent angle of 42 degrees - both far better for control into greens than I can get out of an iron. Great video

So, a half inch came off the 5 iron and an inch came off the 4 iron, from the top of the shaft. Club head weight did not change at all. The small amount of mass removed at the top would be imperceptible, to me and I think 99% of the rest of the golfing world. It seems to me that the shorter length on these clubs would result in a toe down swing, because the lay of the club has changed ever so slightly. Didn't seem to affect Mr. Johnson's ability to strike the ball though.

My v6’s are only 3 months old, can’t bring myself to do this, I winced as you chopped your clubs 😖. My last set of clubs were wishon sterling irons which I really enjoyed - the high COR heads in the 5,6,7 didn’t sound the best but the full set was 8iron length and they gapped nicely - it was the loft that dedicated the distance, along with a decent strike of course.

There is more to making this work than just cutting down long irons. Technically the shafts in each club should be the same. Most people don’t know or even understand tipping and butt trimming but cutting down a shaft more makes it play softer. That’s why tip trim is more on shorter clubs with parallel. Raw 6 iron shafts into the 5 and 6 would be necessary to do this right. Also there will be a 7 gram discrepancy between heads as you go up. The swing weight of each will be out of line. 4 iron swing weight has to be in the B’s which is not good for consistency. Need to bump up head weights in both. He did state that the lie is not the same but same length same shaft needs to have same lie. He fortunately can bend his. Lastly with long irons commonly having 3 degrees difference in lofts they would need to be bumped further apart. His test with a few shots really does not disprove this. Average person hits 4 iron and 5 iron almost the same distance anyways. It’s why most fit into hybrid long irons. Taking a half from one and an inch from the other is not a good idea for gapping at all. More data would only prove this. Get irons engineered to be one length from the start!!!

With your irons already 1 inch long the 6i would be 38.5" They were probably very heavy in the region of D5 swing weight. Shortening the 5 and 4 probably made them D2 ish if Wilson build them originally to around that d5 weight. The problem comes if someone playing the 6i at 37.5" (std) and d1-2 swingweight then cutting 1/2" off their 5 and 1" off their 4i and the swingweight drops to the C8 range. I like the concept of what you have done but feels the clubs really need to be swing weighted after being altered that much.

The Average Golfer Sway Baez yes I agree to. But in the video he doesn’t mention swing weight. Because his clubs were 1” long to start with they were probably heavy. My point is if someone with standard clubs did this without re weighting the long irons they may dismiss single length because it hasn’t been done properly. Also lie angle should be looked at. I like the concept. But feel it needs a little bit of tweaking for most golfers to get the most out of it.

My irons are standard to 7 iron. After that I cut them in quarter inch increments instead of the standard half inch. So 6 iron is only a quarter inch longer than my 7 and so on. I feel like I have more control especially on the 4 and 5 irons.

IV asked a few stores if they could combo my cobra forged Tec set 4/5/6/7 one length and 8/9/PW standard length and was told cobra made a pack not to do this and it goes against what one length irons are trying to do. However I think it would work much better for a wider audience of golfer. In the mean time we might just have to hack our clubs down.

Dear Coach .. t😎Q t😎Q t😎Q .. for this video (& the others too) I wanted a SL set (ie the F9_SL) but can't afford it, can't afford the F8_SL either. So about a month ago, I managed to buy 3 sticks from the bin (7i_M3, 6i_Aeroburner & 5i_RazorZ all steel shafts) Again, from the bin I managed to get S-Yard graphite shafts, cut them to 36.5 inches & I have been playing very consistent, & I believe I will break 90 soon. I get pure hits & good gapping now. You have justified my beliefs in Single Length clubs. ALSO, the single length clubs is just an additional assistance on top of the EUREKA swing that I am current adopting in my golf .. I am now 58, hcap 20, from Malaysia and very happy golfer. Cheers Coach. p/s + using the current Wilson DuoSoft Vivid( .. rubbery feel) adds to my golf enjoyment.

Hi ar halimi, I found some cheaper one length irons in Australia. See www.milfordgolf.com.au to view the SL-7 irons. I bought a set with graphite shafts ( 6 iron- to LW) and I have found them to be performing very similar to the Cobra SL F7 and F9 I have been playing with for two years now. I wanted to try the graphite shafts to see if my forearms would be less sore after a game compared to my F9 steel shafts. I like them a lot. I am 66 ( handicap 18) and have been breaking 90 a lot in the last 6 months.

Didn’t watch all intro so maybe you covered it but changing the length of shaft would change the lie angle and loft possibly depending on how and what you changed .... my question being did you adjust the bounce or find that the bounce was an issue after your changes?

one length is more than cutting down the shaft. the lie angle should be bent to agree with the length. If you cut the 4 and 3 irons to 5 iron length you should also bend the lie angle the same as the 5 iron. Pinhawk makes a dual length set. The pitching wedge through the 6 iron is one weight, 8 iron length and lie angle. the5, 4 and 3 irons are 5 iron length and lie angle.

your swing speed 4 iron - 92 avg 5 iron - 89 avg 6 iron - 87 avg That would make up for your gapping in these clubs. If they are same length no reason the speeds should be different. too small of a sample size to say anything about that. Your 5 iron with another 3 mph added onto it would take your carry up to around 210 possibly.. which would give you a gapping of 7 yards between the two..
@chasingthesun745

The increased swing speed could be due to the slight change in swing weight when shortening the "long" irons.

Very interesting video, viewer for life after this one. Did you find the lie angle effected ball contact in any way? I’d have though by bringing the club head essentially closer to your body the toe of the club would impact the ground slightly before it’s designed to. Thanks

Maybe you figured out something....4 to 6 the same length, then leave the rest the same length? Try a 3 hybrid a 1/2 inch longer than the 6 iron to see if you get the right gapping! What you are doing makes sense to me. One length should be with the longer clubs. 😀

Basically chocking down on your long irons to match mid iron? I'm curious if equalizing the lie would give you a more consistent result? Same repeatable swing for three irons. I'd imagine you'd have to also bend them slightly stronger to compensate.

Steve did you do anything to adjust the swingweight after shortening? My understanding is that would make the clubs feel lighter.
@onlyonecannoli3952
@onlyonecannoli3952 4 жыл бұрын
For foksakes man. You can't just cut down yoor shafts and expect yoor irons to feel like one length irons. Doesn't work that way. All the heads in a one-length set weigh the same as a seven iron. They then increase the loft in the shorter irons to offset the extra length and decrease the loft in the longer irons to make up for the reduced length. Yoor shorter irons get a higher trajectory, while your lower irons go flatter. When you cut down the shafts without adding weight to your longer irons, you end up reducing swingweight and effectively increasing the stiffness of the iron. The exact opposite with the shorter irons. If you increase their length, you will increase the swingweight and decrease the stiffness. Yoor short irons will feel heavy and whippy and yoor longer irons will feel lighter and stiffer. The actual individual shaft frequency remains the same, but by messing with the lengths, the clubhead/shaft combination frequency will change. That translates into stiffer feeling long irons that will tend to push right (right-handed player) and softer feeling short irons that well tend to hook.

Just goes to show unless the manufacturers put mass under the ball in an iron head, the loft jacking is a pure marketing ploy.

Steve, i`ve been using one length for a few months and while I love the shorter 5/6 iron I`m not sure about the short irons, they seem to go short and high, especially in wind. Also I`m 5`5" and struggle to get on with the longer short irons. So, I have a set of Wilson M3 irons and want to try what you have done here but need to know if I have to alter the lie on the irons that have been cut down. I`m very keen to try this but don`t want to ruin a decent set of irons.
