Honestly, I don't think that a 12 character Smash roster should have a 3rd party character. At the end of the day, Smash is originally a Nintendo crossover. In a Melee sized roster, maybe we can talk, but I think a roster this small should be reserved for Nintendo characters only 1. Mario 2. Donkey Kong 3. Link 4. Samus 5. Kirby 6. Pikachu 7. Villager 8. Inkling 9. Shulk 10. Marth 11. Olimar 12. Captain Falcon

Nah man…if we’re gonna be this drastic, there’s 0 need for 3rd party characters. This is a Nintendo All Star game first. This is extremely difficult either way. I’d choose: Mario, DK, Link, Kirby, Samus, Yoshi, Pikachu, Luigi, Marth, Villager or Isabelle, Shulk, and Inkling. Bowser belongs here more than Shulk, but I’d rather try to have as many franchises as possible. I did keep 2 Mario characters but that’s because Luigi is a non-negotiable Nintendo essential.

Honestly, if I had to cut the roster to 12, I'd probably just stick with the original 12 from Smash 64. All of them are integral to the series (either due to them being icons in their own right like Mario and Link, their movesets establishing a decent amount of archetypes like how Donkey Kong is a 'strong but slow' character, or because they are Smash fan favorites nowadays like Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff) and I feel that without them, the roster would just feel weird.

The most snubbed characters imo would be Mega Man and Zelda. Mega Man because I think he is for me one of the best 3rd party characters in Smash and Zelda because if there would have any female rep in the roster, Zelda is cooler than Peach. Also, Pokemon Trainer if you consider he/she as 1 character and not three is a way better rep for Pokemon than Mewtwo.

I really like that even though Sonic isn't very popular, in smash and as a franchise, he still makes the cut in all Three.

Here's my roster, Mario, DK, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox, Bowser, Zelda, Pit, Lucina, Inkling, My ideology here is leaning more towards competitive balance. If Sonic or Steve were to stay, they would have to be nerfed significantly and then people may not want them anymore because they'd be shadows of their former selves and I don't want the camping meta to stay. PAC-MAN's frame data is not okay and neither is Luigi's 0tDs. I don't like Yoshi, I don't know who actually does like fighting Yoshi, a character with such absurd disadvantage escape is not going to belong in my roster of 12. I also don't like any of the four FGCs so all four are out, if Ryu does stay, he'd be reworked. I don't think it's too necessary to keep a villain because DK fills the role enough imo and he's the most heavy-heavy aside from Bowser. Most of the characters I kept are fundamental, clean, honest characters. Although all of them would get buffed and nerfed as appropriate. I decided to keep Zelda because she's what a zoner should be, good at long range, but not so good at close range, almost the same thing with Villager and Inkling I feel isn't too overtuned as a bait-&-punish character that she can translate the best into this new game. With this roster of 12, we cover all the archetypes. Combo (Mario, Kirby) Heavy (DK, Bowser) Zoner (Link, Samus, Zelda) Swordie (Pit, Lucina) Bait-&-Punish (Inkling) Rushdown (Fox, Pikachu) The only one we don't cover is trapper, but I don't think a trapper is necessary because who wants a trapper when so few characters to counterplay them exist? Also Lucina is here instead of Marth because I don't want to keep the tipper mechanic, but if Marth was made to work like Lucina, then by all means, put Marth in Lucina's spot. Also no Cloud because no other characters in this roster have a comeback mechanic. Out of these characters I'd probably main Pit.

My 12 Character Roster would probably be: Mario Donkey Kong Link Samus Kirby Pikachu Fire Emblem Rep (Either from the most recent game or best-selling game, my pick would probs be Byleth) Villager Inkling Mr. Game and Watch Sonic the Hedgehog Ryu Nintendo series and representation gets first priority imo, this started out as a Nintendo crossover and if we're making the roster tiny we should keep it that way. However, I tried to only keep in characters from series that are still alive and relevant in the current day. Also, I'm keeping it to one character per game. Donkey Kong is an outlier but I kept him in because he's still massively popular to this day and is EXTREMELY important for Nintendo history. Yes his series is dormant and is intertwined with the Mario series. But I'd argue that he's popular enough to override that, and distinct enough to earn a spot on the roster. He's going to have a massive part of the Nintendo theme park dedicated to him for crying out loud. For the Fire Emblem rep, Marth seems like the obvious choice but.... nope. Fire Emblem changes protagonists with every game and while he is the first, he's neither the most relevant or most accessible. Like, the characters are meant to get the players to want to pick up the games their faves are from. But Marth's game is old as hell and isn't even available to purchase anymore. Byleth's game on the other hand is still available to buy for current consoles as well as the best selling entry in the series that isn't a mobile game. Mr. Game and Watch got kept in out of respect for his history. It was a tough choice between him and R.O.B. though and I could be persuaded to swap him out. Lastly, we got two third party characters. There weren't any other Nintendo franchises I felt NEEDED representation. Sonic is here because of his recent resurgence as well as popularity and the fact that his history is pretty intertwined with Nintendo's. And Ryu is the fighting game rep because that's a massive genre that doesn't feel at all represented in the roster otherwise. Also he's currently relevant & one of the pioneers of the genre from my understanding. My favourite fighting game series is Tekken, but I do gotta acknowledge Street Fighter's presence.

Ain’t no way he kept Steve and mew two but not donkey Kong or Peach. That makes no sense: because of the following reasons: you should have kept at least two girls in the roster so more girls would play the game. Second: Why did you keep Steve and mew two? Just why. They don’t belong in smash. But seriously WHY STEVE??? There are so much better options. You could have picked any one else.
