Ikr 😟 It seriously took the p*ss. They wanted him to conform, they wanted him to feel what they were feeling but refused to work on the same level, to acknowledge and feel what he was feeling. He was the outsider, which for an individual without the added weight of asperger's syndrome is already ridiculously difficult enough to contend with. Every time he explained his reasoning for something in context the response was "But do this", "But do that". Not to mention, something else that really frustrated me was the refusal to acknowledge something that almost seemed to be a taboo . . . There is a blatant cultural deviation. The very first 'fight'/tense incident when Oli called someone a 'b*tch' was, imo, down to more than his asperger's - it also derives from the British culture. Brits are a juxtaposition, oftentimes far more blunt and direct with coarse language, yet thriving with the subtlety of context. This following analysis may be partially because I love English literature & language and loathe societal constructs . . . I find the evolution of intertwining coarse language, terminology, tones (etc., etc.) intriguing and inspiring. Not only have researchers proved from a biological standpoint that the acceptance and utilisation of coarse language is physically healthy, it also opens a myriad of 'channels' into someone's character, personality and intellect. Of course, utilising coarse language with the stereotypical, insulting meanings is absolutely wrong; the problem is, Oli's siblings do not seem capable of distinguishing the difference. Had they been able to, perhaps (if this was one of the beginning of their 'arguments') . . . Perhaps their relationship would not have become so seemingly interminably strained and, quite frankly, unbelievably awkward. I endlessly felt uncomfortable for Oli, the position his siblings have ignorantly placed him in, both when speaking directly to the camera and when interacting with one another. I truly hope Oli is able to form at least that one strong bond he was searching for and his siblings strive to percieve him for the wonderful, singular, independent young man he is.

Heartwarming but also a bit scary in a "Luke, I am your father...What?!? I Kissed my sister? " kind of way. I guess that's also one reason they agreed to all look each other up. And why a lot of same sex couples would choose to have a known donor that would enable them to be informed about their other offspring. Or even better asking a sibling to be a donor so health histories and possible organ donation would be easier.

@@recklesslntent yes I do understand that autism is part of a spectrum. No person has the same kind autism with the same visible and non-visible traits. The form of autism is individual to themselves with different spectrums of different traits. It is like your finger print its individual to you. I said previously in response I hadn't seen the full program just a clip while I was busy in the kitchen. I missed the part where it said he had autism if it was on the clip I was listening to. It would be extremely hard for anybody to come to terms with being an only child and then to find out they have twenty plus siblings.

I have some aspie traits, and know EXACTLY what it’s like to not really know how to engage with and mesh into large groups, what it’s like to miss the social cues that come so naturally to most people, as well as not always knowing when (or how!) to shut up and bite my tongue. :/ I hope things work out and that some of the siblings develop close relationships with him. ::hugs::

Just watched the whole documentary, and I’m so upset with Oli’s half-siblings! Do they not know what Aspergers is?? They need to educate themselves. How is a person who cannot comprehend social cues the same way, cater to them? Was so frustrating them being so ignorant of his condition!
@butterflymoon6368

He has been repeatedly told that his casual sexism is not welcome. The social cues thing is a reason for the first instance. Once you have been told that your words hurt people then you stop.
@butterflymoon6368
@butterflymoon6368 3 жыл бұрын
This was an interesting watch. Americans are very different to us. Some of them mature very quickly. I like that the group was female centric which meant that casual sexism would not be tolerated. The father figure also had the girl's backs which is so rare in a male led family. The programme made it look as if they shunned Oli but apart from Spencer who I felt was really terrible (you don't stand people up, pretend you're sick etc.) I felt they were very lenient. I get that the programme was trying to push the "they don't get aspergers" narrative but this was not an Aspergers issue for the most part. Please remember that this programme is heavily edited. Oli is a kid. He is purposely making himself an outcast and playing the rebel. He's reading the satanic bible (which basically advocates rape) to be edgy, he's employing casual sexism and God knows what else he has said that we don't know about. He is invested in the role of being an outsider. This has nothing to do with Aspergers. The first time he said those things fine you can say it's the Asperger's. Once someone you exclaim to care about and want a relationship with says that your words hurt them then you stop. You don't argue that sexism is part of your personality. You don't pretend that Asperger's is the cause of it. You don't need to feel the pain the other person feels or understand it to just stop using it. The problem is that he is tying being a d1ck to his Asperger's. That is his age. He's still a kid. They all are but he has a lot of growing up to do. Girls and women don't owe sexist guys friendliness, warmth or open arms. Oli doesn't want to compromise. Instead of listening he wants to debate (his intention argument was also very unaware). I'm a woman I deal with this frustration often. I'm also mixed race. I have to deal with the same thing regarding race too. It's hard in a group dynamic for most people esp only children. I find it very hard too and I don't have aspergers. So I do get it and I do think there is a silent mob mentality that they will overcome once they all have children. Americans are very serious people compared to Brits and have a stronger tendency to ostracise. Again though no girl in that family owes him anything if he wants to continue with his casual sexism and excuse it with "it's my personality". He is still in rebellious teen mode. I think they can see that.

But in reality americans are very difficult to have proper conversation with , they r deliberately trying to show their intentions and words are politically correct even outside their country. Very superficial, intolerant, walking on the eggshell conversation, super kind, super cheerful but everything seems fake. One can never get in depth conversation nor form meaningful longterm relationship with them. They seem so vulnerable to the point where u have to avoid them to not crack their feelings. So i can completely understand Oli. Female centric society is as sick as male centric. Unbearable! American men are no different than their women. Very friendly but will never be friends. Eastern europeans on the other hand are easier to really communicate with . U like them or u hate them .

I wasn't expecting this to be so emotional. Oil is a very brave guy. I see how the language that is so common and trendy in the UK can come across so strong and abusive in other cultures. It is a shame he was shut down and told to be quiet and treated as if he was being disrespectful when he was just being himself. Walking hand in hand with a boyfriend in many countries he would be seen as being disrespectful. It's a shame that he's being asked to conform to the majority. Oli continue to be you and don't let such comments hold you back in life. If your siblings could for a second understand what hold backs you have they would seriously think twice trying to hold you back further. It's extremely clear you are a very kind, genuine guy. You're biological Father was wrong speak to you the way he did, perhaps it's a blessing in disguise he didn't raise you as you would be half the person today that you truly are.

Don’t they think that he would have done that already if it were possible? And the insinuation that people with disabilities should be kept out of the gene pool is down right offensive! Yes he should disclose it the same way he would if he met someone that wanted to have children with him the more conventional way but don’t write him off ffs! Don’t worry Oli.
