Love this video. It'll be great to see more of these. I enjoyed how you created the layout of the content. If I had to choice to hire from any of the 4, you'd definitely get the job. Whilst the design of the other 3 were good and obviously they were designers, you've just proved you don't have to be a designer to create something great with practicality. Great video Mark👌

As usual, Mark, loving the functionality of this redesign. You've given me a lot to think about for layout. I would have liked to see a final shot of the original kitchen alongside the remodels, but I know that would have been a lot to view given there were 4 remodels, including yours. However, I think I like yours best. Just toss in some decor embellishments and no one would be the wiser! Good job.

Nice video. On my side, I would not go for a sink on the island... When (or if) you cook, it is nice to be facing your guests (or family members) who sit on the other side of the island. And you never can load everything in your dishwasher so you will end up having dishes drying on your island, which will look messier than if you have the sink facing the window (not to mention that cleaning up is usually a lonely task so you can look outside while cleaning up the pans...). For the ventilation on the island, if you don't want a big piece coming down the ceiling, you could have a downdraft vent... And last, you could use the dead space with a counter mount compost bin, making this corner your prep space with the fridge/ pantry on the right corner and sink on the other... ;)
@MTKDofficial

Hey Karina! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I love the idea of the compost in the corner. One that’s integrated into the surface. Really cool. If I was designing this for myself, I’d opt for an unhindered island. Just counterspace. But the downdraft is a good way to take care of the ventilation if the range too were to go there. Love it. Thanks.

Design #3 looked like a restaurant. It would be the 1st and last one for me. The first one due to all of the natural light and the stove hood. The last one is functional, you can see the focal point whereas they have the range hidden in the back.

I liked the video. That second kitchen island really sucked! Am I the only one that thinks it looks like a toy elephant standing in the room? I was not a fan. I loved the functional elements of your kitchen Mark, but I thought you could have made the island just a little wider to align the sink with the range more. Hopefully that would still leave room to access the fridge and stuff, but it would be a tighter walk. The designer kitchens held plenty of visual interest, but yours packed way more practicality and functionality in my opinion.

Love vertical lift cab in your kitchen. For sheet pan/tray storage, my cab designer is creating a divided cabinet above the fridge/pantry - easy to reach the front to pull out items, and utilizes all of that deep storage. I would choose your design! Very classy.

Although that second kitchen is awful, the far wall unit with the door opening in your face might have a hinge that opens almost 180° like mine does. I actually use the inside of that door to hang my measuring cups and spoons as well some other small things because of the lack of useful drawer space in my kitchen, so I like it better than a wide single door that would open in front of my window.

Your kitchen is the best to live in. I designed a kitchen too recently and had only open shelves. It was driven by budget choice as it costs a fortune here and also wanted to have more breathing space. I am sure I will take a part of them out later and combine with upper cabinetry.
@MTKDofficial

@@MTKDofficial you are right but I think it is also linked with your lifestyle, how much you cook and family situation, but ideally a mix of upper cabinetry and open shelves is a more practical choice. Time will show if open shelves are here to stay.

Although I like your design best, I think I would have tried to make the island a little bit longer (and/or a bit farther from the window wall) and maybe made the drawer unit in the island a bit narrower so I could get the pull out trash in the island closer to the sink, or tried to put the trash in a pullout under the sink. I’m guessing you didn’t do either way because you wanted dishes stored in the island drawer bank and the farmhouse sink made the cabinet under the sink too short for a pullout there. But I think I’d rather put away dry dishes on the other wall in one of the drawer units by the stove (is there room to open the dishwasher at the same time drawers are opened to the left of the stove?) than to carry wet trash from the sink across the floor to where you placed the trash pullout. Just a thought. Would love to know your thoughts on why you placed the trash where you did.

Great video Mark! Call me old fashioned but I like the original kitchen. The second professional design looks like something from Willy Wonka or Alice in Wonderland. I couldn't imagine the average person having a kitchen like that. What in the world would the rest of the house look like?! To make this a fair comparison the walls, doors, ceilings and windows should remain the same. Most people probably don't have a budget to tear out half a wall and put in a ton windows or do all the elaborate changes to the the structure of the room. Your design to me outshines the others visually and functionally.

@edwardcasper5231

I only saw this today, but I must comment. My first observation is one you made. There's basically nothing wrong with the existing kitchen (although your design did improve it, maybe - I'm not sure if there's as much storage). Which brings me to my bottom line point/question: How much would it cost to do the various proposed renovations, and are those changes really worth the cost? I'd be curious to know what your design would cost since you probably have a fairly good idea (and I'm pretty sure yours will be the least expensive). By the way, I'm getting an OTR microwave/vent (the same basic model as Jackie of All Trades) to replace my 200 CFM harvest gold hood vent that isn't completely functional - only one of the two fan speeds works, among other things). That's because my galley kitchen is all of 72 square feet, and has very limited counter space.
@MTKDofficial
@MTKDofficial 2 жыл бұрын
I'm putting this in the $25,000 range. But it depends on the material choices. It could be more or less. While the original kitchen had more storage, I opted for less wall cabinets, as there is no client and so storage is subjective in this exercise. I could just pretend that the client didn't need any more storage than what was given. Client needs come first in the real world though. Sad to hear about the OTR. Lol.
@edwardcasper5231
@edwardcasper5231 2 жыл бұрын
@@MTKDofficial LOL!!😂 Given my very limited counter space, the OTR makes sense. I use my microwave every day (I drink instant coffee) and make rice in it too (as opposed to making it in a saucepan). The $25,000 figure isn't bad for a kitchen remodel. I'm doing a "Jackie" - like update to mine, which I hope to be able to bring in for less than $8,000 (including a new stove (with front as opposed to rear-mounted controls, since I'm over 70 and may need a wheelchair at some point as I age), dishwasher, and the "appliance that shall remain nameless" - which will become useless if I need a wheelchair so I'm not getting rid of my countertop unit, which I'll store in my garage with my toaster-oven). From seeing the pictures of Jackie's kitchen, she probably has twice the counter space I do. One of the advantages of a small to tiny kitchen is that upgraded finishes (like a quartz countertop in a concrete-like color) aren't too bad in pure dollar terms. I'm putting faux brick on my empty end wall to give the space a watered-down warehouse vibe. I'm also replacing the drawer hardware (the glides) to allow the drawers to be more easily pulled out and have full extension.

OMG! Architectural Digest used to be THE design bible for architects and interior designers until Anna Wintour took it over and turned it into a huge, bloated mess of pretension and over-consumption. The BEST design magazine now is Dwell. That said, I think that: Kitchen #1 was the "best" of their “architectural” choices (out of a bad lot). Kitchen #2 was a joke. The only bit of pleasure I would get after being presented with this kitchen design would be firing the designer. I especially hated the dinette chairs. The posts holding up the backrest looked like an actual human spine (maybe “Vertebrae” is the “in” look this year). Kitchen #3 was…….frightening? Is it supposed to be the lounge at Hogwarts? All those giant floating candles. And those dinette chairs! Very Hawaiian luau - in a bad sort of way. Your kitchen was certainly much better than any of theirs but I did have a couple of questions. It’s great to have that pulldown unit in the cabinet over the fridge but how will anyone under 6’3” manage to close that vertical cabinet door? Why not attach the door to the front of the pulldown unit so that the door and handle both come down to a manageable height? As to your island, it looks like there is a cabinet with double doors under the farmhouse sink. Wouldn’t it be better to change that to two separate drawer panels that are attached to two inner pullout trays so that when you open them everything slides out into view?
