In catalan (and valencian, a catalan dielect) we actually have many words for carrot: pastanaga, pastenaga, safanòria, carlota, etc. Also, the vowels don't sound different depending on whether it's stressed or not, they sound different depending on whether they are open or closed. Those two concepts are not the same, although somehow related. Take the word "parèntesi" (parenthesis) and the word "parella" (pair). The stressed part of "parèntesi" is the syllable "rèn", and the stressed part of "parella" is "re". Both "e"s are stressed, but the one from "parèntesi" is open and the one from "parella" is closed. Then, you have graphical accents (e.g. "é" and "è"), which are placed on the main vowel of the stressed syllable if it follows certain rules similar to spanish rules. Whether you put one or the other depends on the vowel being open or closed. To add to the confusion, we have many dialects (e.g. valencià, català, balear). Certain words have vowels that are open or closed depending on the dialect. But that's not all: a lot of words are written the same way, but pronounced differently, depending on the dialect. For instance, "però" (but) is always written with "ò" but pronounced "ó" in valencian. Also, each dialect has its own conjugation terminations for verbs (e.g. català: "menjo", valencià: "menje", balear: "menj"). Some expressions like "soc malalt" (i'm catalan). Also, when you get into "pronoms febles" you'll see the real difficult part of catalan. You basically need to know catalan syntax to use them correctly. They're basically used to substitute parts that are already known. For instance, "porta això"->"porta-ho", "fes el llit"->"fes-lo", "menja verdures"->"en menja", "regala els llibres"->"regala'ls". Oh, and pronoms febles usually have 2, 3 or up to 4 different ways to write them, and you have to choose the correct one based on where it appears. And sometimes you need the pronom feble even if you have the original part present "t'agrada el teatre?" The "t'" (with the ') is the pronom feble, which refers to "el teatre" (even though it's still there). Oh, and catalan is also spoken in the País Valencià and Illes Balears, come and visit them ;)

There's a reason for the change between the feminine -a and plural feminine -es. When the language was standarized a century ago it was decided to be the most ''neutral'' talking about dialects, so in the west dominion of catalan we don't have these ''unestressed'' vowels and, for general law, the vowels are pronounced as it's written. So we say: dona (with [a]) and dones (with [es]). In my zone (Lleida and sorroundings) we pronounce dona= donɛ and dones=dones. Here, almost all the final ''as'' are pronounced ɛ. In the north and south where I live they say [a] for the final ''as''. In the east they say [ə]. In the balearic isles they don't have this unstressed and stressed vowels so stressed vowels can be pronounced as [ə]. This is all talking in grosso modo, there's exceptions obviously. I find amazing that you like these kind of things and I bet your pronounciation is really good, although the ''ll'' are pretty bad. Also, that you said of ll being different in castilian and catalan, I don't see it, although it's true that in some catalan parts it's pronounced sometimes [i]. It's true that you may refer to the ''yeísmo'' or ''ieisme'' which it's a nowadays phenomenom in castilian (transferred to catalan) that makes the ''ll'' changed to the castilian ''y'' or german ''j''.

The thing about the j shifting into a g is because ther is a rule that states that "Before a, o, and u, goes j. Before e and i, goes g".

That is because the sound on g when its followed by e/i sounds as a "j"(menjar(infinitive)->mengem(we eat)). Also, this is catalan so you are going to find a lot of exceptions and that's how it is jajja. I'm a native catalan speaker btw and i think you did it really good!!

By (in your mind) assuming 'some' doesn't actually quantify anyhting, it works, since it doesn't determine an exact amount, the approximate amount depending on the context. That being said, it is true there is no direct equivalent to it, the use of 'some' being more of a bandaid for that gaping hole in the english language.

Regarding the fact that Catalan language is a mix between Spanish, French and a little bit of Italian, I'd like to qualify that actually the closest existing language is Occitan, as they are part of the Occitano-Romance subfamily within the romance languages. So Catalan is like a brother with Occitan, whereas it is like a cousin for French, Spanish and Italian.

I think Quebecois French also takes the normally "lunch" word for breakfast and the "dinner" word for lunch compared to standard French.

I'm from Valencia, where lots of ppl speak valenciano (it is almost like catalán but with some slight differences) But there are things of catalán like the "u" sound at the end sometimes or some words that are different that confuse me. Even if I have been learning valenciano almost since kinder when a catalan person with a strong accent speaks fast it gets h a r d :'3 Nice vid btw! ✨

As everybody already said, your pronunciation is awesome. Just a thing it you want to improve it even more, the LL at the end of the word it's not pronounced as an L, it's fully pronounced (as if there was a vowel afterwards). This is one of the major things that can give away whether you are native or not :) Good luck and again, very impressive work :)

I'm from Valencia (spain) were we speak a variation of the catalan, In Valencian all the vowels are pronounced practicly like in spanish.

Funnily enough, about dinner and supper, you usually would use the former for the main meal of the day, and the later for a smaller evening lunch, so if your main meal was in midday, you would say dinner and supper as in catalan. Alas, with time dinner cemented itself as the evening meal as that was usually when ppl ate the most, whereas the smaller midday snack became lunch, so nowadays dinner and supper can be used interchangeably for the evening meal and the connotations between them can be found elsewhere. Anyways, as a catalan I can confirm the rest of the world is wrong! As we say some times, "Esmorzar com un rei, dinar com un príncep i sopar com un pobre"

about the j/g sound: in Catalan, to make the sound /ʒ/ as in Jacket we use j/g depending on the vowel following. If it’s an ‘a’, ‘u’ or ‘o’ we use ‘j’ (JAqueta, deJÚ, JOrdi). If its followed by ‘e’ or ‘i’ we use ‘g’ (GEner, GInecòleg). If the ‘g’ is followed by ‘a’, ‘o’ or ‘u’ it is pronounced /g/ as in ‘grape’ in English, for example. I think it’s the exact same use as in English. It’s not that difficult though, any phonetic exception involving the change of a sound before vowels usually goes like this: ‘a’, ‘o’ and ‘u’ are one group and ‘i’ and ‘e’ are the other grup.

Vowel reduction is like 90% of the game in learning the phonology of European Portuguese. Sometimes the vowels reduce so far that they are mere ghosts, like the final /u/ (spelled -o) in masculine nouns which is a completely unvoiced pursing of the lips that has ceased to be a vowel but leaves its imprint on the preceding consonant...

The word for carrot is the most latin one amongst romance language, as it comes from pastinaca, a very similar vegetable. Despite this, we have other words for carrot. In my town we say " safanòria". You can also hear carrota and carlota.

Bread with a drizzle of olive oil and sugar is definitely a thing! and if you think that's weird, bread with a drizzle of wine and a chocolate bar is also a thing. they're not as popular nowadays but they were throughout the 1900s as a an affordable snack. Both in Catalonia but also in Spain in general.

2:32 may I explain? (I just want to don’t blame me) There is a rule in Catalan that says like this: when a letter E or a letter O is not stressed, it sounds like an A or like a U respectively. It’s like this word, “home”, that it’s pronounced “homa”, that E is unstressed, and then it sounds like an A. Another example with the letter O is the word “dolor”, the first O is pronounced U, unstressed and the second O is pronounced O. Other native Catalan people, did I miss something?

Not all catalan speakers identify esmorçar as breakfast. Here in Valencia we call it desdejuny. Esmorçar is actually like a coffee time between breakfast and mid-day lunch. But here we use to eat big "bocadillos"(they are like sandwiches made with kind of baguette bread)

Yeah, the o's turning into u's and the a's into e's is only present in the oriental dialect (which is also the standar) an easier variant to pronunce would be Valencian, it has some diferences in vocabulary (nen -> xiquet) and conjugation (Jo parlo -> Jo parle), but overall it's easier to pronounce, we also pronunciate the vocal clusters, we don't eat the final letters (like 'r'), we differenciate more the b and the v sound and the demostrative articles to differentiate distance (este/aquest, eixe/aqueix, aquell) unlike catalans who say whatever comes first, i guess?

I'm from the east of Spain, where it's spoken a language called Valencià which is very similar to Català. Most of the words coincide, but the way of spelling them is closer to spanish, so it's easier. That's why Català sounds so weird, chainging most of vowel's sounds

The j changing to a g but having the same sound depends on the vowel that goes after, j goes before a, o, u, while g goes before e, i. For example for the verb menjar (to eat) you have jo menjo and ell menja (I eat, he eats) but also nosaltres mengem (we eat). The same rule applies to a different sound that goes with g before a, o, u or with gu (the u is silent) before e and i. For example agafar (to grab) or estiguem (first person of the plural of conditional of the verb to be, can’t really transalte to english with a word), both have the same sound. So, with this, you can have guerra (war) or gerra (water bottle), which have a different sound, whereas id you find a u after a g followed by a, or o, it will never be silent, and the g sound will always be the second case, as the u is actually the vowel that matters, not the next one, like in aigua (water). It’s a bit difficult to explain without being able to say it out loud but I hope it’s clear.
