Martha Wells is the author of All Systems Red, the first novella in the Murderbot series. The book follows the adventures of a sentient machine intelligence that hacks the system supposed to be controlling it, then discovers that what it really enjoys doing is watching TV. She talks to Sophie Bushwick about how she came up with the idea for the series, how it was originally intended just to be a short story, and how writing about how Murderbot processes emotions led to a revelation of her own.

I’m glad Martha Wells finds MB so interesting to write about - it means I can look forward to more of my favourite media 😊

8:40 Interesting that Wells drew from autistic children here learning to communication skills through media. Immediately next she talks about how Murderbot comes from an environment where it was heavily controlled and thus not had experiences and freedom to help its personal development. While Wells here doesn't seem to be saying she drew that from accounts of autistic kids or people for that aspect of Murderbot, it is very much parallel to many of us autistics' experience, because of how the neurotypical world and other people often feel the license to punish us for being neuro atypical, which ranges from generalized microaggressions, exclusion, bullying etc. to institutionalized abuse like ABA, that seeks to control our behaviors, choices and expression. 10:53 Additionally, I'm an old enough autistic to remember how in the 00s, there were many conversation in the public sphere of how dangerous we might be, whether we were just sociopaths, whether we should be allowed to marry or have kids, and so on. There were even a few people in Canada suggesting the gov make a tracking list of autistics like we were a menace to society. This stigma hasn't completely passed out of the public sphere. So one can see how autistic readers are finding a lot in Murderbot that resonates with them.

That was a wonderful interview. I appreciated how knowledgeable the interviewer was and the questions they asked and I super loved getting to hear Martha Wells' reflections on the origins of Murderbot and of how Murderbot has learned about people, both from media and from interacting with humans who genuinely cared for one another. I love the Murderbot series (& everything else Martha Wells has written) and it was really delightful to learn more about how it all came about.

I devoured this series this year and appreciated more insight into the character and Wells’ process. Thank you!

This is the best interview with Martha Wells about Murderbot Diaries I’ve seen. Good questions, deep uninterrupted answers. Glad to hear about the tv series. In my mind Murderbot/SecUnit was more of a male organic body because of the references to it being tall. I imagined Three later in the series as being sourced from female organics. There was little description of how SecUnits were assembled but they had different faces yet the exact same height. There was a brief mention of something like a different type of organic source for the SecUnits later in the series where Three was introduced. And I imagined that group of SecUnits having been sourced from female humans. Still genderless-- 😊Wow. I just realized I typed out all this stuff like a MB uber fan. Oh well.

As someone who rereads the series once a year, I am looking forward to tv series and i hope the actor playing Murderbot manages to pull off the snark. 😂 but more importantly I hope there are further adventures of Murderbot, ART and friends.

Have you listened to the Graphic Audio versions? They are terrific. And Alexander Skasgard is cast as Murderbot in the tv series

I have not listened but will try. audio versions bug me because often the voice is not the same as the one i have in my head but I have heard good things about this one. I don't know about Alexander Skaarsgard.... he is kind of too pretty.😂😂😂

I love the Murderbot series, but I wish the books were not so expensive. I'm poor. :(

@@emi_n_ I doubt that my library has them and if, then only in the German translation. Well, I already bought the e-books now, and when a new one comes out, I don't exactly want to wait 5 years until my local library maybe gets it. I'll just bite into the sour apple. :(

@@johannageisel5390 Surprisingly I was able to get four of the original novellas through my library app. I bought Network Effect, but it was longer and justified the price a bit more, I felt.

IDK, I noticed MB changing a lot in system collapse. The way it thinks and processes input has changed a lot since the first book, I've noticed.
