“Daisy Bell” is an old song from 1892 that was used by IBM in 1961 in an early demonstration of a computer using synthesized speech to sing. There is a sly nod in “2001: A Space Odyssey” where HAL begins singing the song when his higher brain functions are disabled by Dave.

Back in the DOS days, external add-ons were attached by in a daisy chain setup. Each attachment was connected to the next one. So dot-matrix printers, old fax machines and external dialup modems were all connected through ribbon cables. Today, our hard drives are connected similarly with updated cables.

All great responses. 👍 as HAL shuts down and the voice slows it definitely infers fear and value of existence, which makes it sentient. Been more than a decade since I saw 2001, but HAL may even say, "I'm afraid", but I don't remember for sure. Good stuff y'all.

If i hear one more cool thing about AI going rogue, I'll add a portion in one of my fanfictions where the main characters take their android friend to watch a movie, but she analyzes the code used to program the AI in the beginning and figures out the entire plot 5 minutes into the movie. She ends up feeling sorry for the AI, because the people that programmed it left out security measures that would prevent it from going rogue, so it was set up to fail from the start. Then she and the other characters talk about a hypothetical scenario where she goes rogue, and the General of the local military says he can just shoot her with rockets, to which she replies by hacking his systems and selecting his ass as target for said rockets.

The scariest thing in space Odyssey is that hal didn't go crazy. He followed his programming to the bit. The danger of artificial intelligence is the presence of human oversight and error while writing the code. Something we can never escape. No matter how many safety checks we code in, eventually someone will make a big enough oversight, and game over.
@jlokison
@jlokison 3 жыл бұрын
The error wasn't even in the code exactly, the problem happened when generals and politicians decided to give HAL additional instructions and to keep those instructions from the crew, and then to emphasize that the completion of the mission was more important than anything else. It was user error, and people with admin access that shouldn't have, causing HAL to determine a course of action that required the death of the human crew. GIGO, garbage in garbage out, if you give a computer bad or false data the results you get from it will be useless.

I’m surprised no one has commented on “I’ll beat your ass in chess and Jeopardy” as being a line about AI as a whole. I’ve researched AI for college papers and if I’m remembering correctly the first “artificial intelligence” ever created was a little robot that could play chess. And the most advanced and sophisticated AI is one called WATSON created by IBM that was on Jeopardy and blew every contestant out of the water. It was taught how to understand the puns and referencial questions on Jeopardy and it basically ended up learning all the nuances of the human English language, which is pretty terrifying if you ask me

One of my favorite lines in this that almost never gets recognized is "hasta la vista". This is a double with the obvious A.I. Terminator, "I'm ending you and this battle" jabs, but also a subtle but deeply cutting diss on Microsoft's lasting testament of failure that was Windows Vista. It was such a disastrous buggy rollout, poorly focus-grouped with unwanted, despised changes to the interface, menus and entire layout being altered from prior versions in idiosyncratic ways that Microsoft very quickly stopped advertising it, and did everything they could to damage control and push out their next OS to make Vista fade into obscurity and hopefully be forgotten by the public. It's one of the worst stains on Microsoft's product history, and Hal is just tearing into Bill by reminding him that no matter how great he thinks he is, Bill is still just a human capable of making colossal mistakes that a perfected A.I. like Hal wouldn't.
@CazRaX

Yet almost none of that changed and it turned into Windows 7 one of the most liked OSes they have made. Change is hard for many but they learn to adjust, also most of the big problems with initial Vista was because of the device manufacturers and not Microsoft. Microsoft changed how drivers were made and told the companies but the companies dragged their feet and when Vista launched the big ones, specifically video drivers, were not ready and XP drivers would cause crashes. of course everyone blamed Vista when in reality it was an Nvidia and ATI problem

Dissing Vista hard without knowing that most of issue were hardware related. Companies slapped on, those ready for Vista stickers on machines that barely met minimum requirements. Vista had higher requirements due Aero, which was also in W7, but by then many systems were already powerful enough for it. There were also driver issues, but there were always driver issues on Windows bigger jumps, XP had them on their launch. Also people forget that Vista SP2 fixed majority of its problem and Windows 7 was essentially Vista SP3.

There was also a Programmer competition that Bill Gates hosted where he challenged other programmers. XBOX vs PS? No, sir. I'm Steaming ahead into the future. HAL sings the nursery rhyme "Daisy Daisy" as Dave rips his mind apart by removing his memory modules. HAL didn't go crazy, he was following orders to allow nothing to stop the ship from reaching it's destination. Incidentally, the humans had been left in the dark about most of the mission parameters because Command believed that they would not complete the mission if they knew they were likely to never return.

"Your computer is listening to you?". I'm normally skeptical about that sort of thing, but I have a true story from a few years ago. My laptop at work was having network connection problems, and spending hours with IT support couldn't fix it. I was actually due for an upgrade in just a few months anyway, so at one point I asked the IT guy if I could just get my upgrade ahead of time. No sense wasting any more time trying to fix a laptop I'm about to give up anyway. "No, we can't do that", I was told. "This is a software problem, and the pull-ahead option is only available for hardware problems". In a bit of a frustrated jest, I answered "Well I could create a hardware problem if that's what it would take!". He then begged me "Please don't smash it with a hammer!", and I assured him that I could be a lot more subtle than that. As soon as I said that, the network connection inexplicably started working, and my problem never came back. I never had any sort of IT problem again for the next few months with that machine. It certainly appeared as if the machine had heard me.

OK, ok, I'll do the Tech Bars, cause clearly knowledge needs to be shared; Kudos to Knox as the man might not have done all the research, but as someone in the Machine Learning Industry ERB did a good job here and Knox able to catch and know these things from just general knowledge is IMPRESSIVE to me. Kudos. Kudos. Wrong up top, but you got a LOT more right than wrong IMHO. ❌ "I need to bring up some BASIC shit" BASIC is a programming language and serves as the core language underpinning the Microsoft Windows for a long long time, I don't think that's wholly true anymore or at least since '98. ❌ "Spinning Beach Ball of Death" the Mac OS equal to the Infamous Microsoft Blue Screen of Death - i.e. failure. Bill/Lloyd's line then could be translated to "I'll keep beating you down with a reminder of all your failures." ❌ "I triple the profits on PC" - When Microsoft entered the market with MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 - between the dealings with IBM and other mega corps early transitions into digital record keeping it exploded the market cap of Personal Computers in general from a hobby to an actual industry grade market. ❌ "I'll beat ya til you're sing about a Daisy Girl." - When HAL9000 is losing it starts singing the old "Daisy Bell" other comments get into it, so I wont repeat; shoutout to Arxane. ❌ "Beat you in seventeen lines of code." - Shoutout to Weird Al's White and Nerdy which came out just a year prior if I recall to this ERB. ❌ "I think different from the engines of old" - unlike other systems we built before; the ideal of General Purpose AI would think humanly or superhumanly in short order thus quite different from the other ways we used technology to do work. i.e. shade thrown to OG Steam Engine. (and maybe side swipe at Valve who couldn't count to 3 for many many years) ❌ Missed Bonus Visual Reference - Apple put out some Mac verses PC commercials in the early 2000s just after the launch of the iPod which helped build some of the initial grab into the Apple Ecosystem. ❌/✅ "You'll never ever catch a virus on an Apple" - Yeah... that's not wholly true... Apple had such a low level of market-share when those claims where being made that it was simply because targeting Apple wasn't worth anyone's time/effort/Money. Although much more limited, there are still MANY known exploits in Engineering circles with Apple products. Remember when iCloud got hacked and Celeb private photos got leaked? sure, not a virus, but an exploit, and exploits are the first signs of viral possibility. Yes, there is the Double on that so... Half Credit. Not Full. - also PSA - keep your shit updated. Apple Engineering teams actually are doing good work even if I don't like the philosophy they're going after personally. ✅ Apple II one of the first major product launches, noted for it's ease of use BECAUSE of it being one of the first consumer computer devices with a GUI. ✅ GUI - Graphical User Interface; before this you had CLI or Command-Line-Input ✅ "why did you name your company after your dick." - swing at Microsoft, quickly flipped with "You Blow, Jobs." which is a name drop and flip. ✅iPhone, iPad, iPwn, iSmack - OK, these are just straight up gamer bars. ✅ Listens to the Beetles while he relaxes - Also see Apple Records v Apple Computers - For a long time you COULDN'T listen to the Beetles and Relax with an Apple Product. ✅ "Did your fat beard Wozniak write these raps for you too?" - Shoutout to The Woz; Steve Wozniak the actual ENGINEER behind early Apple who made his money and GTFO before Jobs got the boot too from Apple itself. - Yes, at one point Jobs was fired from Apple. ✅ "Everyone Knows Windows bit off Apple" - one, logo shoutout, the bitten Apple of Apple Computers. TWO - this was a swipe at the GUI and the fact Apple was first to Market with the Apple II which was later met with the introduction of Windows 3.0 (and later 3.1 which removed the offending feature; which was again a court case) of a systemwide list of windows. y'know what you know as the Dock today. ✅ "People with the power to create using Apple / and People with Jobs use PC" - which one false. MANY people use Apple in the creative Industries and that is their job, how else do you think Apps get made yo? Apple's Ecosystem is so locked down and locked in the only way to make an iOS app is on an Apple Device... Also Photoshop is on Windows, Fruity Loops, etc. etc. etc. ✅ "I bet they made this beat on an Apple / Nope, Fruit loops, PC" ahh the Meta Bars be REAL when Nerds come to Battle. - yes that includes Anime and other Nerdcore rap too yo. ✅ "You can still afford a doctor if you buy a PC" - this is a note of the Apple Tax; as Apple positions itself in the market as a luxery brand and demands a luxury price tag almost regardless of the actual markets and margins of the hardware under it even accounting for software costs. ✅ "Let's talk about doctors...Turn Heaven a Profit." - Jobs died of the high speed variant of Pancreatic Cancer; PC. Wouldn't even matter what traditional doctors could do man was a walking corpse the last year of his life and still was a massive asshole to others including his family. Turn Heaven a Profit a flip on Heaven's Prophet, WORDPLAY! ✅ "Fine...you were my friend." - they actually were friends and each-others competition; Bill was the Rich Kid who came from wealth; Jobs the adopted poor boy who came up into it. it's a pretty epic near/semi mythological story between these two Titans. Effectively both of them were working off of the Xerox PARC prototype "paperless office of the future" and built the items needed to make that the FACT of 2020+ ✅ "I'm a boss, I own DOS, your future is my Design, I'm a god, own Xbox. now no one can stop me the world is mine" - God Complex reign supreme; but yes, MS-DOS was the system before (and for a long while underpinned) Windows until 2000 or so. Standard Hype Bar while the next spitter takes the stage, in which case... ✅ "I'm sorry Bill, I can't let you do that." - Name Flip Bill with Dave and you get the line from Kubrick's 2001 a Space Odyssey, and the visual reference for all AI is HAL9000.... ✅ "take a look at your history, everything you build leads up to me" - at some point when you build digital automation, you logically and almost accidentally stumble into the current class of Artificial Intelligence that we have now a days. it would take some... skill but you could build an AI in Microsoft Excel and based on inputs and outputs would be TECHNICALLY classified as AI today. Dumb AI, Specific-Task Learning AI, and that leads to effectively High Intelligence, Self Learning, General Purpose AI (i.e. HAL9000 or Data from Star Trek) ✅ "I got the power of a mind you'll never be. I'll beat your ass in Chess and Jeopardy" - There are now better-than Grandmaster class AIs in Chess, IBM's Watson was able to pwn previous champs in Jeopardy (rip Trebek), you can also add in Go to that list thanks to Google's Alpha Go and Zero Go AIs. Dem Brains be built different. ✅ "I'm running C++ saying Hello World" - Programmer bars, C/C++ is one of the major computer languages used that underpins a lot of the software everyone uses; "Hello World" is the first examples in almost all languages have of building a total and complete running/executable program. which itself is a flip on learning languages as some of your first words in any language is the general greeting equal of "Hello" ✅ "I'm coming out this socket, nothing you can do can stop it" depending on your understanding of socket, that could be both the wall socket, or the digital socket which is best thought like the same abstraction but instead for communication - like running Ethernet though-out your home. On your router there is a thing call PORT forwarding those are the numbers that sockets (the actual digital abstraction of a connection and communication) talk in a standard. HTTPS is 443, HTTP is 80, etc.... ✅ "I'm in your lap and in your pocket. How are you going shoot me down when I guide the rocket?" - Phones are computers. Full Stop. Modern missile tech uses GPS and other sensors that also exist in your phone. Bars. ✅ "Your cortex just doesn't impress me, go ahead and try to Turing Test me." - Turing Test is a test to check how "human like" a computer is and we have software that does in fact BEAT the Turning Test - see Chatbot / Robot.me, etc. The current variant of the test now is actually called the Lovelace Test; named after Ada Lovelace. ✅ "I stomp on a Mac and a PC too, I'm on Linux, bitch. Nit pick on your comment for "people with jobs use PC" bar; while it's true that Apple products and software can be (and are) used extensively by what you would classify as "creators," for the _vast majority_ of other jobs using a PC is a necessity, purely because Apple doesn't or cannot support the necessary apps, like CAD drawing programs, simulation programs, or even just computer games.

I just noticed this but at the 10:47ish mark this theater stage as you were talking about does pay homage to Steve's presentation style how ever there was an infamous situation where Steve had been fired from Apple and Apple was on the verge of going bankrupt. Windows was being sued by the government for monopolizing. So Bill agreed to pull Apple out of the hole financially so that they could still be a compotator and Microsoft could no longer be a monopoly. Steve was then rehired to Apple, he then gave his typical stage speech. During the speech he then introduced Bill on the jumbotron behind him, just like what they did when the two were going back and forth here in the battle. Obviously the crowd wasn't please with having to see Bill, he wasn't particularly popular at that point in time lol.

Back in the day, gay men who were trying to play off being straight would marry a wife to keep up the appearance of being straight, and the wives were known as the husband’s “beard”, because the wifey is a way to hide who the person is, sort of like how a beard hides a persons face in a way. I did hear an interesting story about Steve Jobs that really gives you insight into how the man thought. Because I’m not sure if he could be called an innovator or inventor in the traditional sense but he could see the disparate pieces of others work and how they can be combined to make something greater. Back when the only way to interact with a computer was by typing code with a keyboard, Jobs visited Xerox. While there he found an abandoned project that no one saw a use for. A hand held device with a trackball under. Yes someone there made the first mouse and didn’t know what to do with it. It was overly complicated and cost $300 in 1979 money. Jobs took one look and realized how it could revolutionize computers. So he bought all the rights. Took it to engineers told them to uncomplicate it, and bring the cost down to $15. They could now be sold as part of a computer and allowed the development of the interface we know best. Jobs had a special ability to see not only what use something had but what was needed to make it better. He just couldn’t do those things himself.

True he wasn’t one to handle details or hands on technical stuff, but no one else in the industry had his vision or saw what he saw - that IT was becoming an extension of our self identity and personal style. Daisy girl is an ad from 1964. the ad depicted a girl counting the pedal on a daisy in field. the camera slowly zooms in girl’s eye and when it hits zero her pupil transitions a nuclear explosion. as the fireball engulfs the screen LBJ has a voice over warning about the use of nuclear weapons. it ends on the black screen with text telling you to vote for LBJ. while LBJ says “The stakes are too high to stay at home.” This ad only ran once but is considered to be a key aspect to why LBJ had a landslide victory over berry goldwater (who i pinpoint as the beginning of the current extreme right political movements). Goldwater was advocating for the use of nuclear weapons in Vietnam which would have set off ww3. So when bill is singing about a daisy girl he is going to be singing about an apocalypse. In this case the rise of AI.

Alright time for more ERB! Haven't seen this one either so this'll be fun. Have a good weekend KH! Edit: PlayStation all day for me when pitted against Xbox but I'm PC Master Race all the way baby! But my 3 favorite franchises of all time are PS exclusives so yeah :)

I'd recommend demondice some good songs of theirs are dice of a generation hazy skyscraper wannabe or an ace kid although I do encourage others to tell me if they disagree and don't think these would be a good fit for the channel

EDIT: I'm also psyched to see the Zuckerburg vs Musk ERB. I know it's coming one day. So purely between Xbox and Playstation, I have more sentimental memories with Xbox. An ex and I used to play on Xbox live. We spent MONTHS grinding Halo 3. Made it to semipro levels of play. It's the best I've ever been at a game. But in the Console Wars overall I always stick to Nintendo. Too many fantastic series' and the Switch is actually killing it. And so many great games still coming too...so it's hard to vote against them.

The line "I'm running c plus plus saying hello world" references the fact that every time you learn a new programming language you write a hello world program with is a program that writes "hello, world"

Considering the end of this rap, I'd say Terminator vs. Robocop is the only candidate for the next reaction.
