In this video we react to @SupergeekMike video Let's Talk about Tiberius, where he breaks down the Critical Role character Tiberius Stormwind and the actor that plays him Orion Acaba. Acaba was a cast member of Critical Role campaign one until he left the show after 27 episodes. Much of the reasoning behind Orion's leaving the show is unconfirmed, leaving many fans to speculate about exactly what happened. so today lets talk about Tiberius Critical Role's Elephant in the room.

Some of the funniest scenes in crit role history are shopping related. But Orion had a knack of making it unbearable. It always had to be a success. Matt would try to explain that you can’t just find anything in any quantity you want. And he would go on…and on….and on. I think Travis has really done well especially recently recovering from these experiences and doing shopping with his own spin but it took him some time.

One thing I find funny is this: Despite Tiberius’ main character syndrome and needing to be the center of attention, the animated show perfectly displayed how disposable he was. Seriously, nothing in the show indicated there was a missing character. In fact, his absence only benefits the story progression. Looks like when your main gimmick is trying to one up other characters moments, its easy to edit you out and just let those character moments happen.

I mean true but also remember that the show cuts out quite a chunk of stuff that the other characters did as well 🤣, so it isn’t just his absence that benefits story progression they are also cutting out all of the stuff that wouldn’t of made good TV story progression I also disagree with you on the beginning of the show being a shit show that might be your personal opinion but you might also have too high of standards because all you’ve seen now is the current stuff, it’s like looking at an old video game and then looking at the most current in the series and saying that the original game was a shit show, they didn’t have the budget that they have now, One of them literally met Felicia Day at a party & told her about their Home game and she’s in told them that she had a spot at geek and sundry and they should do a live series of their home game. They didn’t come out swinging with a big budget And personally I would’ve loved to see their actual meeting of Lady Kima rather than “oh here’s this random Halfling with gold armor within this group of other random people”

It's amazing to compare and contrast Tiberius' creations to Percy's creations. Talesin and Matt were in regular communication for every one of Percy's designs, to the point where he just had to say "I'm gonna work on the thing" and Matt had him roll. All the shopping, prep, and busy work was done off camera. Meanwhile, Orion spent an hour buying every mirror in Amon for some vague unknown purpose.

What his video didn't mention was a LOT of specific "I want to win D&D" cheating behaviors, such as fudging dice rolls, having way too many sorcery points or spell slots, nonstop metagaming, and "thinking" his magic items did WAY more than they actually did. This is all stuff you can usually get away at a private table, but with 9000+ people watching you on camera, plus with video-on-demand, it becomes a lot easier for everyone to spot. Just want to mention that Orion had been in their play group for a couple years before it started streaming.

NOT a fan of Tiberius NOR Orion, but in his defense about him thinking his magic items would be doing more/work differently; Someone explained to me that they (Critrole) used to play a different version of DnD, but swapped for their streams because of the new version seeming more "viewer friendly" (if i recall correctly), and thus, a lot of items had changed. Not saying he didnt use that to his advantage, just a plausible explanation for that one instance of cheating i heard from somewhere.

The cheating is what gets me most. Like, its SO FUCKING EASY to flub things in DnD, especially if you abuse the trust your DM gives you. Ive had people cheat with everything from adding 1 gold every session, to BSing rolls, to adding a point to their stats every now and then, and as DMs you MUST keep track of this stuff. But to do this shit,, ON STREAM, with THOUSANDS of people watching with scrutinizing eyes? Youd have to be totally stupid to think someone wouldnt notice.

I defended Orion many episodes after many viewers started turning against him. Until it eventually all went down and I had to realize the problem he was. I think we all know what episode I had to give up in. Then rewatching C1 as I often do, I realized the problems were visible in hindsight pretty much at the beginning. I think all the problems come from "Main Character Syndrome". He seemed to want it to be "the Tiberius and associates show" rather than Vox Machina. I noticed even in the early episodes that he tried to insert himself in every scene. The group was split with some of the group off doing other stuff while Vax was talking to Gilmore in the back room of GGG, and then suddenly Tiberius is there too. There were other scenes where the group is split in 2, and the other group is having a conversation and Tiberius tries to put in his 2 cents, and they had to remind him "You're not there". Because he was the star, so should be in every scene. There were many times that someone said they were doing something funny or cool and Orion says "I do that too". I realized on reviewings that he was trying to coopt characteristics from the other characters as his own. Things that got viewer attention or love. Everyone loved Trinket, Vex's pet. Tibs gets a pet pseudo dragon. Grog always got viewer attention with his brutal melee fighting. Now Tibs has rather vicious melee weapons made and starts using them rather brutally. Then he starts taking Percy's ideas for crafting of his own. I think the "half-chub" comment actually comes from that too. Scanlan gets a lot of attention for dirty jokes. So Orion decides to take on that personality trait too. Only he just throws out a comment with no connection to what is actually happening. It's like it was just that he planned that he needed to make a dirty comment, and just threw it in where it didn't belong, where Scanlan made comments that came to his mind when the fit. Like his hard wood comment when they landed on the hard wood of the deck. It fed into the moment rather than just blurting out that you have hard wood into a random moment. Then when it was clear they were getting into the Briarwood arc, clearly a Percy centric arc, Percy's story. While they are discussing the Briarwoods, Orion says "I hate them most of all" trying to make the Briarwood arc about him. Because if the show is about a character, why would it have a major story arc for a side character like Percy. It should be about the star. But D&D is about all the characters having a different role in the show. Everyone has their part to play, not to be coopted by another player. And everyone should get their moments in the spotlight.

honestly there's so many examples of this. No Mercy Percy blows off a stableboy's hand and ruthlessly murders another dude? well, Tiberius is Also going to brutally murder an innocent. Never mind how Percy's character is carefully setup for him to snap like this and he continues to show inner conflict and guilt over his actions, whereas Tiberius moves onto the next thing that gets him attention. Though, i think the only person Tiberius doesn't mimic is Keyleth, who- at this time- was notoriously shat on by the community at this time. I think. Too much material to sort through. Either way, at this point Tiberius isn't a character- he's a collection of cool things from other characters shoved into a single conduit.

@@BoojumFed i already watched 27. as a dm i think it's important for me to recognize problem characters, tension in the table, and how to handle it. but god that whole episode was a mess. matt is an incredibly good dm, but this is a situation where being a live show works to their detriment. if it were me, i would have stopped the session, halted the rp, and had a talk about behavior at the table. As someone new to the series (up to ep 16 now), I picked up on the problems pretty early. In the latest episode I watched, in one single turn, he decided he was going to use telekinesis to tear the wing off a wyvern, which is fine, but then he also supposedly pulls eight daggers out of his pack, and uses telekinesis to throw them all at the wyvern, and then repeatedly pull them out and stab over and over, and then make them hover threateningly over the wyvern's head. I was like... surely that's like 3 turns worth of actions, there. It was basically a whole fight's worth of actions rattled off by a single person all at once.

@@Alister222222 As someone else just mentioned to me, these seem to be cases where being a live show hurt them more than helped them. At a table you have the option to stop things completely and have a discussion with folks about what exactly the player is trying to get out of the situation and get everyone back on the same page meta-wise; but in a *_live_* show that's not really a tool in the bag. I wonder if that's not a main why issues began. Between the system shift (Pathfinder to 5e) dramatically altering characters abilities mechanics leaving folks uncertain what they _could_ do and the live-show pressure to always be an interesting watch things couldn't help but be different from the home game they were playing up to that point, so some teething problems were inevitable; but without the opportunity to hit pause and let folks calm down and talk it out the variety of different ways people handle and mishandle those stresses just kept snowballing... Yeah Tiberius tried that quite a lot. He would often try to bend spells to his will, such as using his ice blast spell and deciding he wanted to hit every enemy in a hallway he was in the middle of so he just decides he can use the spell with both hands and attack everything. This was when Delilah sends the undead to kill the carriage driver so he doesn't talk. There was also some other metagaming in that scene as much of vox machina were not at the fight when it started.

I think it's less obvious now that CR is such a cultural force but when streaming D&D games was new, we only had our local games to compare to. They were figuring out on the fly how to transition from a home game to amuse the players into a performance-based format that had to appeal to the audience, too. Pretty much anyone who's played a came at their Friendly Local Game Shop had a That Guy in their game, who puts his own fun ahead of the rest of the group. For Matt to have eight players and only one of them be disruptive was a huge improvement from what most of us were used to at home. I feel like that's the real Matt Mercer effect - modeling a game where the players are a community first and all working together towards a common goal.

That's a good way to view it; I believe in the whole "there is an equal and opposite reaction" thing; every good or bad thing has an opposite effect. The Matt Mercer effect of people wanting to be exactly like Critical Role cause it's cool and awesome is stupid and should be abolished. However, aspiring to be like that in the sense of being a DM that assists and drives the players to expanding their characters and crafting a better world and narrative is exactly what any good DM does, and Matt Mercer is that, thus, the good side of the Matt Mercer effect; making DMs who wish to grow as DMs know a good example of a great DM, and thus aspire to follow in the footsteps of helping the players reach their full potential in their story they wish to tell alongside that which the DM sets the framework for.

Compare this to the literal dozens if not hundreds of little roleplay moments between Vex and Trinket (or Vax and Trinket, or Grog and Trinket, or literally everybody else and Trinket) and it's all about breaking the tension of the moment or genuinely interacting with the group puppy (basically) because they *love* him. I've seen a few defenders of Orion constantly bring this point up and saying stuff like "what about when Sam as Scanlan said..." blah blah blah. There's one KZfaqr in particular (I forget who he is) who tends to bring that part up... you know, as if the "Half Chub" line was the ONLY reason Orion wasn't on the show anymore... What a lot of people like him can't seem to get through their heads is when Scanlan was pervy... 1. It was part of his character as a horny bard, and 2. Sam actually knew how / when to pick his moments. Orion couldn't do that. Also, not everyone's relationship on that show is the same as everyone else's. Like just because they're cool with one person doing / saying something doesn't mean they're gonna feel comfortable when another person does or says something. That's not how this works. Unfortunately, Orion (nor his defenders, for that matter) can seem to understand that.

But yes, it is a VERY huge difference. And from what I've seen, it's another case of Orion stealing other character traits from the others and putting them into Tiberius (Percy's inventions, Vex having a pet, Grog being brutal, and now Scanlan's perverted "humor") - it wasn't even a joke, it was a statement. I wouldn't have laughed either. I know his defenders were also pissed off about them killing Tiberius off screen, but with that being said, at least Matt and co. treated his death with respect. They could've done anything, but IMO, Matt took the high road with how he treated the off-screen death: Tiberius went down swinging to defend the innocents. They gave him a hero's death. I have never gotten to play D&D (I know online games exist, but I'm an in-person gamer type), and while I'm not sure whether or not Orion has gotten better after all of this, these stories (as well as other RPG horror stories I see from the likes of CritCrab and Den of the Drake and Crispy's Tavern) have gotten me to learn to be smarter about who I would play with, what red flags to keep an eye out for, so at the very least, I'm glad videos like this exist.

the difference is that SCANLAN said these things. Or Sam makes a lewd pun pertaining to the situation, out of game. Orion said „Tiberius gets a half-chub“ like you would describe your character doing anything else, so it feels totally extraneous. Why make everyone aware that your character is getting hard? He didn’t say „Suddenly Vex seems a lot more attractive to Tiberius!“ or have Tiberius speak himself like „That was the most attractive thing I‘ve ever seen you do!“, so there was no roleplay reason to throw it out there- cause the characters aren’t going to notice or react to that. Plus since that wasn’t part of Tiberius‘ character beforehand, it just seems totally creepy. Like when he used to be all over Marisha, or when he was pouting cause Allura wasn’t returning his advances.

What's so disappointing is that Tiberius had so much potential. For those may not know, Tiberius Stormwind was born to the influential Stormwind family, one of the most powerful in the realm of Draconia. From Tiberias' perspective, he successfully completed the sorcerers' rites at a young age and was tasked with trivial matters he found boring. He then found a corner of the library with dusty books and scrolls outlining the locations of various legendary magical artifacts. The Sorcerer's Guild's Council said it was a waste of time to search for such legends, but Tiberias was undeterred and would prove to his colleagues that he was right. Here it's worth mentioning that his wisdom score was 4. That's right. Four. Many of his defenders still cite this and argue that the things he didn't during streams were just Acaba "deftly" roleplaying a 20 CHA and 4 WIS character. He did, in fact, find the Mending Wheel before stream. He was also a solid enchanter, having made Vex's blazing bowstring before stream. What if, however, he was wrong about his past. What if the reality was that he was a political liability to the Stormwinds and his showing signs of sorcery was a welcome relief? His father made sure he passed his rites quickly and was sent along to perform boring tasks so he wouldn't do something foolish to embarrass his family--accidentally revealing a secret, insulting a political opponent, etc. Instead he had a title, a respected position, and most importantly was far away from the halls of power. When he wanted to leave Draconia on an impossible search, the Council and his father thought it'd be fine. He likely wouldn't find anything, die in the attempt, or succeed and show his colleagues that he could do the impossible--something the Stormwinds would quickly convert to political capital. There's also just the idea of playing a socially unaware character who yields deadly power. Like Grog, but a caster. Like Keyleth, but instead of socially awkward, just socially inept. It could have been great, but alas, Acaba wasn't interested in telling a cooperative story.

I'm watching the campaign for the first time right now, and I just finished the Draconia episode (I cried so hard). One of the things that it brought to mind for me when we discovered that Draconia had operated on a caste system, if not outright slavery, was how he reacted when Tofor was introduced for the first time. She was tailless, but had a highly respected position on the Council of Tal'Dorei, and he was *awful* to her. It had the makings of a great storyline, where we learn about Draconia and potentially change his mindset on the Ravenites, and all of that went right down the drain.

Cause he got Scanlan to trade items in the end, and he got a magic item that let him maintain concentration on 2 spells. For ONE extra round. That part, he forgot EVERY TIME he used the item. So he'd think he can cast fly twice and everyone can fly for 10 minutes, but he forgets one fly spell will die after 6 seconds. It's still a very useful item, and his schtick to convince Scanlan to trade for his Ioun stone was even pretty funny. I also notice a few instances where he was basically writing the story from the back seat. The group gets the Horn of Orcus (I think?) from a corrupted beholder, and Orion very authoritatively informed everyone that it was pure evil and had to be destroyed. With absolute certainty, he tells Pike she can use her divine powers to destroy it, and when you listen to him you know he believed he was either correct, or just declaring this to be true, as if he was the DM. (Matt shut this down, of course). But it got worse because then in the following shopping episode he turns up having obtained a bag of holding, which he was going to use to destroy the horn, kind of man-splaining to the group and seemingly the DM that if you destroy a bag of holding with stuff in, it gets somehow sent to oblivion. But Matt's character is like... 'err, no... it will end up on the Astral plane where it could be found by someone.' It made his character look very foolish for having mostly already started his plan, considering he was supposed to be an expert on magic. I think Orion really needed to learn to be open to the world as the DM was presenting it, and ask if his idea would work within the game narrative. There was little evidence he was taking guidance from Matt as to how the world worked.

One thing I'm not hearing from you, or in the comments, is just how visibly uncomfortable Marisha looks while interacting with Orion in his last appearances. He's touching her a lot more in a way that I read as testing her boundaries, and she's clearly not happy about it. The last episode with him is still the only ep I haven't watched.

I started watching at episode 24 and it eas something i immediately picked up on. She looked so uncomfortable and I bet it was hard for Matt to see it and have to keep composure on camera. @@vision_walker The issue with people like that, is that they usually start small because they're testing boundaries to see what they can get away with. It's very much a "well I got away with this, so maybe I can also get away with that" sort of mentality. They usually continue to escalate until they get called out. If you're lucky, people like this will take the hint and tone it down, but sometimes they don't, and you have no choice but to kick them out (whether that be the game, or your life depends on the situation). Basically, it's very likely the dude seemed normal to the group at one point, and just slowly got worse as time went on.

@@starlitking0138 I don't think it's because of that. In earlier episodes, Marisha was clearly okay with being close to him. They had been playing for about 2 years before stream, so I definitely think that overtime, something was happening off screen. If it was his HIV status and the cast had *such an issue* about it, he wouldn't have been seated closely to people (not saying that's how people with HIV should be treated, just going off this comment). But Marisha was 100% not okay with him touching her, and with her past with se/xual as/sault, it really pains me to see it. I hold that the slayer’s take party split was a test that Orion failed. Matt separated him from Travis, Laura, and Sam to find the conflict source. This doesn't really need to be addressed to newer fans, who most likely started with C2 or C3 and are completely unexposed to him. The weird defense force on Twitch chat white-knighting Orion appear to be much older fans, those who _were_ watching C1, and for some reason find absolutely nothing wrong with what he did. They're the ones who will react any time any other cast member makes sexual innuendo and say "BUTWHATABOUTORION?!?!" There's a strong correlation that Marisha's hate squad intersects with these guys, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Venn diagram for it is just a circle.

I decided to relisten to the beginning episodes afterwards and couldn't make it past 5 or 6 episodes with how much it stuck out after all that has been created since. I've been a majority podcast listener and have rarely watched any of the actual videos so I never picked up on any of the casts physical tells of the situation, but even just relistening to the episodes, it's fucking rough. *misspelled

Only difference was she's the DM's wife, so she stuck around long enough to improve as a player. Needless to say I also immediately noticed all of this things about Orion, at the time. I first time I REALLY noticed the strain was in an interaction during the 'Trial of the Take' episodes. It had to do something with a Ring of Spell Storing, Orion misunderstood the mechanics, was already kind of grumpy from wasting a lot of spells/sorcery points up to the final fight, and even Matt was upset which is the one time I've ever seen him EVER in game. From there, it started to show more and more for me of him trying to suddenly be something for EVERY CHARACTER CLASS. Granted, his character's wisdom was Low, so I chalked up some of the interactions in game to that for the characters. But seeing Travis and Sam, the happy guys in the group grow slowly more and more annoyed you yourself start feeling it as well.

As such, it is tainted by his presence. Oddly enough, it was one of the better ones where he was NOT so annoying. Much better than in the Trial of the Take... or even Episode 27. Ugh... And beyond that they're not afraid to yield time or roleplay or badass moments to one another. And a big part of this is indeed Matt knowing how to divide his attention, work with his players, and make sure everyone's interests are explored and advanced. As a DM I have taken some note. I've consumed wniugh online content that I'm not completely lost, but still have yet to find my first campaign. That being said, back to Orion. He didn't have anything that felt; individually, insurmountable... but there were just sooooo many little things. Orion didn't do anything that the other characters weren't also doing.... hell, even the cringiest of them all, the Allura entanglement, Sam was also just as creepy in Scanlan's dogged pursuit of Pike. Percy would tinker some wild shit to come up with even wilder shit, to do massive damage. There was one moment that stuck out to me, on my initial experience watching C1 (I started with C2, finished it, then went back for C1)... Tiberius was trying to craft a fog cloud, using holy water. Exactly like explained, Tiberius was trying to start at step 14 in explaining it, and Matt wasn't putting it together... while trying say, "no, that won't work"... it still remains as the most hard ass, I have ever seen Matt (or any streaming DM)... just repeated says no, almost with a "Are you fucking serious?"... then about 10 minutes later, Laura tries the exact same thing, (with Percy attempting to assist I believe) to which Matt just flatly tells her to roll, and then says it fails. Orion was just a really bad fit, when you look at the role play as a collaboration... he was the square peg, in the round hole... But how come no one talks about his neverending supply of sorcerer points? Even being a proto-noob, I could tell the cast was clocking that too lol

Both Sam and Marisha both started to look at his every dice roll from a certain point, exchanging looks and texts with Matt. So yeah, all that's missing is clipping them all together, along with a sorcery point counter (and magic storing device suddenly being used a lot more higher level spells then it states it holds, or just a bunch more charges. Matt even calls him on it once and either reads the item description to him, or makes him read it out loud, can't remember which rn), to prove it's not 'alleged', you just need to know to look at the people around him when he rolls, but i get that people can miss it if they get swept up in the story or are just watching one of the million other people at the table when it happens. As they aren't making a scene about it, they are leaving it to Matt.

He pivoted to not just being unhelpful but getting in the way for the rest of us for half an hour and finally we all tried to stop him in game and when he started to get pissy I tried to explain why the behavior was not cool. He ended up being insanely disrespectful, pretty much admitting to using me and doubling down on past offenses he had apologized for as just pacifying me so he could keep playing. So I kicked him out until he could apologize. He messaged me saying a lot of horrible stuff and I just blocked him. Told our dm from that game it was up to him what to do but I wouldnt play with him and he would not be allowed at my place. I would be fine just not playing if they wanted to continue to play together so it wasnt something where a side had to be picked. Then i told my group that we would be doing a soft reset to restat characters to account for losing our fighter snd there would be a small arc about retrieving some things he had and wrapping up any loose ends with that. Thankfully the last bit we had done had him finding a cursed sword and becoming paranoid about his friends so it fit that he went insane and turned on everyone.

If I was DMing when Orion said he wanted Tiberius to use telekinesis on the arrow that was already going to land true, I would take minimal agency from Orion and say "You get ready to use telekinesis to assist, but before you cast it you notice that the arrows trajectory is already so perfect that there is no spell that could improve the accuracy of Vex's shot." Use it as a moment to, hopefully, promote character growth without taking anything away from Laura and Vex. The success is still all due to Vex, but Tiberius was there in case something went wrong. Tiberius could even be surprised at how well it was, and it could lead to a moment of growth where he realizes that his teammates are better than he thought (not that I think Orion would actually do this, but it puts the ball in his court). If Orion has a problem with that, then it means you need to have a conversation with him (and let's be honest, lack of communication seems to have been a big issue, even if it wasn't the only one).

When she reunited with her friend, he immediately took that as her being robbed from him, but really she wasn't at all (and anyway he has no authority over any character, npc or otherwise.) It wasn't until he brutally killed an old woman who was attempting to flee the battle and was knocked out prior to him killing her, that she lost any and all interest in him because it was so incredibly fucked up of him to do that.

What would even be the game? Tiberius and Friends ft. @StealthMarmot_
@StealthMarmot_ 8 ай бұрын
If you are wondering about the mirrors, it was because Taliesan had Percy try to come up with the idea of making a mirror laser, basically using hundreds of mirrors in order to point them all at the same spot so that in sunlight it could basically set anything on fire. Because that's how Taliesan rolls, thinking like a supervillain. Percy rolled for it, tried to do it, and found that he couldn't find enough mirrors or it would cost more than he had and it wasn't working out. He had that sort of thing happen. Matt gave Percy a chance to fail at making devices, and the more lavish the harder the difficulty and cost. He let that happen because Percy was, by nature, a mad inventor. Orion had Tiberius decide he was going to try to do the same thing, despite not being an engineering specialist. Matt, patiently, gave every possible hint that it wasn't going to happen. Matt is a "Yes, and..." sort of DM, but when you effectively steal another player's idea and try to get it hoping your luck is better despite you having no real in character reason to do it or consider it, the DM is not going to be cooperative. Having a character be like "Hey I'm going to succeed specifically where you failed!" is a crap thing to try to do in or out of character. Worth noting Tiberius never tried to assist or loop in Percy that I know of, he wanted to just do it himself.

So also during the whole addiction thing, it had come out that he (Orion) had been abusive towards his girlfriend at the time. And then after he "left" the show he decided to try to create a show based on his character without getting permission from Matt and using Matt's world. Thus kind of why Tiberius and literally everything that Orion tried to create post-show was canonically dead.

So after watching this and SupergeekMike's video, I was convinced that ep27 wasn't nearly this bad. I remember it being a little drawn out during my first watchthrough a couple years ago but not unbearable. I've always had some frustrations with Orion and these videos helped put words to why I found him irritating. But yeah, these videos convinced me to go rewatch 27 just to see if it was worse than I remember. Starts okay with the fight, though his habit of thoughtless friendly fire puts Vax and Garret in danger and he was clearly tuned out when it wasn't his turn. Then some decent RP, tho Tiberius almost aggressively tries to take the carriage driver to his room. Then Assum appears, and everyone's having a moment, and Orion makes a dick joke that breaks immersion for the table. Frustrating, but tolerable. Drops mention of having a damn army at his disposal to stop the Briarwoods, and here I'm like, "Okay, listen." Then, shopping. My *god* that's when I realize how awful it was. Tries to outdo Percy with the death laser. Tries to stack buffs on magic items. Begs, pleads with Matt to do things that Matt outright tells him is impossible given Tiberius' limitations. I can see the palpable frustration building in the rest of the cast, then they actively start telling Orion to stop and he just. Doesn't. It culminates in something I don't think Matt has done since: outright shutting Orion down at every turn and eventually punishing him for trying. Usually that's not behavior I'd vibe with from a DM, but in this case it was necessary. If he let Orion keep going, his shopping trip would have taken the rest of the session. And then the whole thing wraps with him *invoking aforementioned army* as if trying to steal the entire Briarwood arc away from Taliesin. This really made me realize what FraudOnTheTele and SupergeekMike were talking about when they mentioned Orion's need to win D&D. It wasn't in the spirit of the game, and he again put himself in a position where Matt had to shut him down. I was considering a C1 rewatch, now I know for sure I'll start on Ep28.

I watched it from the beginning and then saw Mike's video about 4 or 5 episodes in. I knew it was going to be bad, but 27 was the hardest one to sit through. Some awkward moments or tension are gonna happen in weekly 4 hour streams, but they usually move on pretty quickly and get the energy back on track. That awkward tension just stuck for the entire episode though, felt like it was never going to end

Even though i also missed a bunch of Orions bad behaviours at the table, as i was new to DnD and didnt really know how the game worked, i did pick up one thing very clearly and that was how Tiberius was trying to romance someone who was NOT interested in him AT ALL. Everytime he tried to make a move on Allura i was just "no man" " That is extremelly unconfortable". She was giving so many signs she was not interested in him and when Kima showed up it all made sense. But also his entitlement and disrespect towards female NPCs (and PCs). Now as a woman and a lesbian that made me cringe a lot.

The worst for me was when Allura and Kima were reunited. Nothing romantic happened but the whole cast caught The Vibe and Orion’s reaction really grossed me out. The very first episode it struck me that Orion's look and mannerisms all reminded me of the heroin/opoid addicts that I used to hang out with in my homeless/punk rock days of the late 90's/early 00's. Never did them myself, but many people around me did, and I remember them all acting like he did. Painful reminder. His meta gaming and side stories and jumping from group to group literally made me stop watching live. I rewatched the early episodes 1 time before I made the decision to not rewatch them ever again. any chance you have a time stamp? Edit: I think I found it- episode 11 at about 4:34:58, Tal starts saying “It’s like that thing at the end of Time Bandits. We should just-“ and Orion cuts him off snappily with *“Yeah, I just killed it. Don’t tell me what to do, dawg.”* Travis laughs at him and mockingly repeats “don’t tell me what to do”, and Laura comments that Orion is being very ornery, especially considering they had to _tell him_ to come back into the battle and hit the thing. Tal looks upset for a moment and doesn’t really talk much until the episode ends a few minutes later and they go into the after show. This moment also feels especially mean considering Orion literally just borrowed some of Taliesin’s dice to make his attack.

When Matt would try to move things along, things that in a home game might be attended to fully, Orion would often pull him back to it. I didn't mind Tiberius at first, the scene that got me was after he had the custom weapon made, there was an encounter with mercenaries and it's like he wasn't paying attention to the fight, the group decides to let this old lady run away after they basically disarmed her and when it got to Tiberius's turn he turns his new toy into a flying buzz saw and cleaves her in half. You could tell the rest of the group did not like what he did and he was more excited his weapon worked. Later on they are confronted with the king who says we can't prove she was attacking you guys, we can prove she was running scared for her life when you brutally sawed an old woman in half and Tiberius is like wait there are consequences to my actions? This kind of goes under the category of he is playing the game by himself and forgets there are other people and forgets Matt plays NPCs are though they are real and if you keep doing whatever you want there will be consequences.

i think it's good to remember what his behavior was, but i think it's also good to consider the dynamics of the situation - these guys had *been* playing vox machina for 2.5 *years* before they started, yet episode 27 is just 7 months later. I do think a large part of this *is* fame getting to his head, and that the fact that he's done shitty things in response to fame doesn't mean he isn't a decent person otherwise, because i don't feel that "being a brand" is the reason they kicked him out. as you said, it's clear he was ruining everyone's enjoyment of the game, so they wouldn't have tolerated 2.5 years of that prior to CR.

One thing I will say. I don't think that his reaction to the Alura thing was homophobia. Main character syndrome and entitlement, without a doubt. 10/10 would not want him at my table. That said. I've been that guy at one time and I do believe it can come from different reasons and not always malice or entitlement. Sometimes it can be the only thing you have in life, or feel like it's the only thing you have and master. And giving that up when you are in that headspace can be tough. For Orion I would not be surprised if that was part of the reason, though there are things around the whole incident that indicates that he would probably have been a problem player regardless.

What I wonder is how much of this was due to the fact they had changed from a Pathfinder to DnD 5e, and his class being one of the most changed, and how much of it was due to to the fact that they were now in front of a continuously growing audience. I think whatever bad habits he had were likely exacerbated by this, or perhaps even stemmed from this as well. - I think we forget that they were already somewhere around 75 - 100 sessions in before it ever went to camera. Their fight with K’Varn seemed to be the first real episode where anyone had a major issue with Orion, the audience included. That final episode with Orion was time after time of him not being able to read the room. It’s the only time I can recall Matt putting his head on the table in boredom and frustration. I don’t think he ever did that aside from episode 27. It’s unfortunate because if he had been able to reign himself in more, he might’ve been with the cast a lot longer or even still to this day. He was being given constant clues from the entire cast to stop, including Laura’s hilarious jab about Tiberius being the giant eagles of Tolkien. But all of it went unnoticed and none of it swayed Orion.

There is a fine line between "winning at what your character is supposed to be competent at in D&D" and "winning D&D". The latter implies an antagonistic relationship with your DM and usually includes munchkin-syndrom in terms of not just player power but also trying to one-up everyone all the time. The former is just a form of optimization and often doesn't include those problematic tendencies.

I sort of protest that Orion took the Allura incident terribly. Now granted he might have not caught on to hints that Allura wasn't interested and showed some trouble there, but my read of when he actually figured that they were in a relationship was taking the L and said "Story of my life". The pounding was meant to be comical over-reaction, and him having fun with the situation. Not saying he took it in stride, but to be perfectly honest I would have been more worried and considering him being mad if he DIDN'T react and instead sat and seethed. That said, Orion had a tendency to not necessarily be the best at delineating when he was, as the British say, "taking the piss" and when he was genuine. He especially didn't have that in respect for the camera, where the audience is concerned. Thing about Critical Role that people don't realize is that while the players are genuinely having fun and enjoying one another, it IS still a performance. This isn't their home game, they know they are on camera and they know they have to be careful about how they act and how something that may be friendly to one another may not necessarily play out to the audience without proper context and setup. This doesn't make it NOT D&D in any sense, they just play it a certain way to make sure that it's entertaining and digestible for the audience. D&D always does have a sort of sense about when you are trying to press your advantage or argue something, you don't want to hold the game up TOO long, but on Critical Role that tolerance for rules lawyering and trying to push the DM is MUCH lower because you have to keep the story running for the audience. Playing to win is a valid way of playing D&D for some people, but that can easily be boring or tedious for an audience. It also means an acceptance of an ensemble cast, and that you have to keep yourself extra in check and even possibly NOT use your full capabilities to allow someone else to get their time to shine. In my opinion, I think the Vex with the arrow situation and Tiberius using telekinesis before even seeing it have issues was a more problematic act. I mean, Orion/Tiberius, my dude, poor Laura was playing a base vanilla beastmaster ranger. Let her have some moments that the DM makes because the GAME sure isn't going to afford her anything cool!

Even if she wouldn't be a problem to THEM, and they weren't convinced she wouldn't be, she would absolutely be SOMEONE'S problem down the line and probably a VERY powerful problem. Matt revealed in the wrap up that she'd become a fucking lich! As well as start playing with these new mini Thordaks, plus his corpse! When Matt makes a decision she accepts it even if she's not happy because it's disadvantageous towards her. Just like everyone else at the table. You keep trying to make a case for why Marisha in particular is such a toxic player, but you're ignoring ALL the times other members of Critical Role did these SAME things and it was apparently FINE when they did it because REASONS. Cause if they did something, and you're complaining when Keyleth does it, SURELY you'd mention it to be fair. Remember the time Vax ran ahead? I'm sorry, I think I made that singular. Remember when Grog and Scanlan or Grog and Tarry did something stupid? Remember when Pike slit a prisoner's throat? With a mace!? Everyone seemed a bit worried to step on anyones toes at the beginning but once he left they had more freedom it felt like. He just wanted the show to be about him and I remember watching Travis roll his eyes once whenever Orion began to talk. Sam even had to keep his eyes on Orion's dice rolling making sure he knew how to count. It was interesting because once the comments and chat began saying Orion is cheating or doesn't know how to count, Orion's Tiberius began to miss more shots. Hm...interesting, isn't it? Anyways, I'm glad that they didn't turn it into a big deal or make a large statement on his behalf it was just, "Yup, this is happening to Orion. Moving on." Which to me is good that they let it be.
