Birthdays should be fun, but for kids in group foster care, turning 18 can be a frightening reality. On that day, they’re on their own whether they’re ready or not.

Even though they are technically adults at 18, they are still mentally immature. They should be given another year to live in foster care for job training and interning, given a class in basic personal finance (bank accts, budgeting, how to pay bills...), cooking, and other basics of life. Then, help to find an apartment or other living arrangements.

I can attest to this. I lived in so many group homes my entire life and as soon as i turned 18 i was left on my own to figure it out. Most of the kids intentionally joined gangs, homeless or went to jail so that their basic needs could be met (shelter/food). Most don’t have families or anyone to go to. Very small percentage go on to school and make something of themselves. It’s really hard!

I can’t imagine that these poor children at 18 are able to find jobs that enable them to pay rent and utilities…let alone have a credit rating good enough to qualify for decent living spaces
