I disagree with Joshua Bardwell. Mounting Antennas

I watched a recent video of JB's. It was Odd that I had just made a video about this.. It seemed to go against what I had said in my video. Also ultimately went along with what someone said in a reddit when I posted my vid there...
I don't completely agree with JB specifically with antenna zip tie method, that it will get sucked in and chopped. Or that they can be chopped at all. Also.. I don't like how he mounts them because it does not make sense.
But it's just a rant, and Joshua Bardwell is okay in my book.

Well English is my third languages but still I manage to understand Josh Bardwell. And he doesn't say will suck with the props, he just said it might be happen...

Drilling holes in the frame weakens the structural integrity... just so you know. Also I tried mounting it the way YOU do, and i used plastic tubing instead of heat shrink and zip ties. One crash flip over and both antennas gone.

Depends where you drill them, most frames are swiss-cheesed without much thought to continuous fibers anyway.

Well that’s not his way?? lol. I’m not saying he is right. But if you didn’t use zip ties and heat shrink it’s not the same as his. Just sayin. Happy flyin!!

I use this setup often and have never had an issue with hitting props ... actually works very well for the XM+ SBUS.

just to add my 2 cents. I did run antennas the way you say, and one did get chopped off. The zip tie didnt break, but the prop did cut through the heat shrink and cut the antenna wire. No, it did not get sucked into the prop, I crashed upside down and some thick weeds pushed the antenna into the prop just before I disarmed. To be fair, I only had one layer of heat shrink on the antenna. If I had 2 layers of heat shrink, it probably would have been stiff enough to be fine. So the conclusion is: if you mount antennas out the top, use 2 layers of heat shrink.

Thats a brilliant idea with the cable tie and heat shrink, the only problem is the affect n the velocity factor, id be interested in seeing them on a antenna analyser to see how much the tune is affected

I mount antennas with zip ties and heatshrinks and I also think this is the best to do. I have 2 quads with long thick ia6b antennas mounted exactly like you. They are both still totally fine and undamaged.

Came here looking for something else, but I totally agree. This is still my prefered way of mounting antennas after 4 years.

I've gotten bunches of failsafes with JBs technique. Switched to this sort of method, and haven't had an issue. I do still use the JB method for micros that dont have any good mounting points up top, though.

I agree used both methods and have had no issues especially using strong zip ties . Just like anything in this hopping we all have our ways of enjoying our hobby

Will the different signals from the different antennas interfere with each other if they are mounted too close to each other? I mean between the whisker and the orange antenna.

You are correct, a vertically polarized antenna will have a hard time communicating with a horizontally polarized antenna. I am wondering why your 5.8 ghz antenna isn't straight up. Why it comes out horizontally and is bent up a little. Why?
@dumbledumb2585
@dumbledumb2585 5 жыл бұрын
You have to remember that when flying, usually your are tilted quite a bit forward. Making the antenna much more "straight" up than when resting.

Suction wont suck it in. But 50 mph might push it in?
@iwontreplybacklol7481
@iwontreplybacklol7481 Жыл бұрын
Nope. Its too thin for even 50mph to have enough force to push in past a few degrees at best.

Mounting the antennas under the arm like in JB’s video is a much better way to mount an antenna for many reasons as he stated in his video. Sorry bubba

wow, the dislike ratio shoes the fanboy portion pretty strongly, your points do make sense. antenna placement is "in theory" somewhat sensible, but in reality this is so far off. so different solution may be good for one but bad for another one, its that simple.

Prolly won't block them by arms unless you just hover all the time but then distance wouldn't really matter. Do you know half the things you say before you say them. I mount mine off the arms for over a year and still have original antennas that came with the quad. And are freestylers trying to fly long range? I doubt it. Lmao what am I doing? Oh I'm hitting the antenna into the props cuz ur right, it is the stupidest thing you've ever done. Cuz nobody hits the top of the quad which would push antennas down like a 🌲 or anything right. All it did was shear the end? Point made! I stuck antenna in hard core and antenna still together. It's just sheared and marked up. Do you really have any subscribers?
