Alternatives to Adobe products have been a hot talking point among digital artists, especially since many of us are freelance or independent artists and the price point of enterprise programs like the Creative Cloud suite can be staggering for those on a budget.
What if I told you you could replace almost the entire Adobe suite and save yourself hundreds per year?
In this video, I talk through my thoughts on what it was like to switch from Adobe to Affinity.

Productivity in Affinity Photo/Designer is insane! Photoshop has a lot of performance issues Affinity doesn't have. It runs smooth as butter, it's so damn good in my marketing agency routine. Best 2021 purchase so far.

@@madameberry Loved your video here. I have an i teresting story. Used Adobe for prob almost 15 yrs. got so sick of it. Not only the cost but bloated evt. With the m1 mba (who ever thought I would say i own an agency and can design a logo, do a 32 page mag and edit 4k (bought final cut pro, again no sub). Loved Affinity at first and then weirdly went back to adobe for a sec and then went back for good to Affinity because to me the ui compared to adobe is so so much better and affinity on the m1 mac is snappy and then some. So bottom line is I really am enjoying Affinity and you are correct, it will only get better. Shape builder is my main wish list for designer but there are ways to do the same thing just differwnt. Also affinity on ipad is way way ahead of adobe. No idea why but seems almost like the same program. Happy I found your channel and be well

@@roguewavecreative I saw a video the other day with an interesting prediction that Shape Builder may be coming soonish, based on what Affinity is doing with the Contour tool. It'll be interesting to see how that pans out. And thank you!

@@madameberry its funny you say that because of course once I deep dove into Affinity I looked up "shape builder" and there was comment from 2017-8 from Affinity saying it was on the roadmap. The Contour Tool is really interesting. Its kinda like people keep clamoring about Affinity getting Image trace and the prez of Affinity said they would do it when they felt it was perfected. I agree with that because image trace is not that great and you could use the smooth pen tool in affinity and get a better result.

Last year I found Affinity Photo by accident, I decided to download the trail and within 48 hours I uninstalled the Adobe creative cloud and never went back! You can't beat the Price also it's not sluggish I have the Affinity program on all my devices even my older ones and it still runs smoothly unlike Adobe that's also full of bugs! the same bugs that's been floating around since 2018!

I just cancelled my Photoshop subscription after 7 years. I'm so scared moving to another program because I have brushes I know and love, but I can't justify paying that kind of money for it anymore. I hate how everything is a subscription now! Going to give Affinity and Clip Studio a try...
@KingFearless
@KingFearless 2 жыл бұрын
@@Debbeh @Debbeh I know how you feel but no need to worry Affinity photo resembles Photoshop so much there's not a steep learning curve it's really easy to pick up also most if not all of your photoshop brushes should be compatible and if not there are lots of tutorials to show you how to convert those brushes in to Affinity brushes. And yes all of these companies now a days gaming software, movies everything is becoming subscription based to make sure customers are continuously paying never owning anything it's a disgusting business model. If you're looking to replace Lightroom ACDsee has a great option with 1 time payment and if you're looking to replace After Effects DaVinci Resolve is a excellent alternative the free version is just as powerful as the paid version with no watermark also no trial period you can use it as long as you want check out the Blackmagic design website. I think the scaling problems comes from the fact that Affinity creates every layer by default as equivalent of Smart Object in Photoshop. After scaling back and forth it keeps all the pixel information.

omg Newspaper!!! have been trying for months to transfer pshop skills to affinity (only aff photo for ipad so far) for newspaper production! some of the biggest challenges have been figuring out how to select rich black line art from comics and ads and make it true cmyk black (no color noise) which isn't easy in pshop either bc we're often getting noisy scans or noisy jpgs. if you have any insights i'd love to hear them! for images, our basic workflow is to take often crappy rgb jpegs and: rotate and crop and resize them (e.g., 5" wide at 300ppi) Increase canvas size for composites & collages, to add registration marks, etc Resize in inches AND ppi so it places on the page without too much re-sizing Adjust color balance and saturation both globally and by fuzzy-selecting target areas Convert to cmyk Fuzzy-select areas for Levels and other adjustments Apply filters to increase clarity, reduce noise, etc. Save as .tif with lossless compression (e.g., LZW) for emailing to layout artists

I've been watching lots of switching over experiences lately since trying to avoid the Adobe CC... They hooked us from art school (Ringling / Illustration 2005) Now it's time to leave my beloved CS6 behind *sigh -and making the change has been extremely difficult --I was ready to give up and subscribe to the cloud, but instead found small solutions each day to the differences found in programs like Designer vs. Illustrator which I'd lived with for over a decade. So many answers either in the forums or on KZfaq so I def hope you'll make more videos on Affinity in the future; it's so helpful to find them as the community grows (: Thanks for this

After 20+ years with Adobe, it only took a week of trying Affinity to buy it an ditch them, that was over a year ago. I retired a few years back and freelance now, mainly doing ad layouts for publications, newspapers, etc, plus the usual logo designs for the locals. Unlike you, I do almost everything in designer, the only time I use photo is if I'm actually working with a photo, and need to do something I just can't in designer. Some of the drawing resolution issues you experience in photo might be remedied by using the vector brush tool in designer, since drawing is what it handles best, plus everything you draw is vector, you have features to control flow and stability, plus it can be edited. It's stroke based so you can expand it and tweak to your heart's content. Play with designer more for stuff like that! It does a lot more than most think, I love it!

In CSP I use Flyland Designs brushes which are amazing, and I wish i had them in affinity designer. When I used Adobe Illustrator I use the varying width tool on my stroke and it is a fast way to get the thickness of each stroke just the way I want on the fly. I wish that was an option in Affinity Designer if it is I haven't found it yet. the tool allows you to just drag in an area on the stroke (beginning/middle/end) you want to make it thicker or thinner. Please let me know if you know of a way to do this without having to manually go to the stroke menu and adjust settings each time. The situation now: First layer on brush first strokes, open glide not activated, 8 GB ram dedicated to Affinity, no other program active. My system a bit old and small: Dual Core 2.4, 16 GB ram, average hard-disk (120 GB Ram, enough remaining space, Win 10 Pro, all Windows settings cater to software performance i. e. all Windows effects are deactivated! It manages Photoshop after several hours painting and still allows for even more elaborate brushes! My hunch: maybe Affinity's requires initially more capable hardware, while others programs are more don't? As it is, on my system Affinity is a patient that can't even have visitors because it is too weak, while Krita, Clip Studio Paint, and Leonardo are doing just fine and Photoshop, as long as one doesn't produce mountains of layers works reasonably well: It can't climb Mount Everest, but it can mak several hours walks in the hill country! That baffles me! At least Photoshop and Krita should have the same problems as Affinity if it WERE my system! Keep up the good work!

I might be misremembering, but I recall a recent update increased the minimum system requirements, unfortunately. I hope they continue to work on performance issues as well as features, because I would love for adobe to stop having such a chokehold on the art and design industries.

@@madameberry Then we are two >;-))) Incidentally: I quit Photoshop a few days ago😉 I think Photoshop has contributed a lot and I don't regret the time I used it, but most things I do can be done with the software my camera maker provided with the camera. The permanent flood of new features doesn't allow to familiarise oneself as one would wish! It sets standards but to retain its users it has to change! The likes Krita, Clip Studio Paint and Affinity show how it can be done! Despite the fact that on my system, as of now, Affinity looks like a failed Photoshop, I can see in the many videos of exited users, that it is a serious contender! A big thank you for taking so much time to respond! Kind greetings from Hamburg in Germany! 🚢

@@madameberry Because you responded so kindly I’d like to let you know, that I have found a solution! After creating new documents, Affinity didn't respond to brush strokes. It complained that the current layer wasn't pixelated. But offer no option for a correction. When I created a “first layer it offered to rasterised the layer . Then I used the “Paint Brush Tool”. It allowed for strokes of ~ 10 to 15 mm, before the strokes either “broke up” or got extreme lag. Last night I tried to use the “Pixel tool”. The immediate effect was a. I didn't have to rasterise the layer because (as described in videos) Affinity responded to my first stroke by converting the layer into a pixel layer! b. On a hunch, I closed Affinity after that, opened it again, and chose the “Paint Brush Tool”, and voila, Affinity pixelated after the first stroke! Now, Affinity is not as fast as Krita or Clip Studio Paint, but it comes close! There seems to be a bug in the current version! (I will inform Affinity) Thanks again for taking so much time!♥️

I don't work in 3D so I don't have much recent experience, but I know lots of people have been moving to Unity and Blender. Illustrator can make some 3D shapes, which is neat for making graphic design elements with wireframes, but Affinity Designer has no such capabilities unfortunately.

Clip Studio is amazing. The Affinity stuff, not so much. And the features in Affinity software do not put them almost on par with industry standard. Not even close as far as I can tell, and I've been a user of Serif product for probably 15 years. The Affinity software is one step forward and one step backwards. Meaning, there were a lot of features in the old software that did not make it into the new software, while the new software has newer, different features. Adobe has it all though. That's what you're paying for. Having it all.

I'm sorry you found Affinity lacking in what you need. Lots of artists, myself included, have no need for the vast list of features in top-of-the-line enterprise software, so for a lot of people, Affinity is exactly what they need for a price they can actually afford.

Wish I could switch to all the Affinity Apps but the devil is in the details. I think they overhype themselves, and it will be quite a few years before they become even close to a substitute for Adobe, if then. I am too often frustrated trying to do basic tasks, quickly. The Affinity Suite superficially looks simpler but has annoying deficiencies and quite a few of their actions require more and slower steps to do what you can do with the Adobe Apps. They lack support for various file formats that I use, jpeg 2000 and HEIC with Alpha in particular. There appears to be absolutely no intention, that I can see, that that is going to be corrected. Also there are annoying pointless differences to absolutely standard shortcuts that constantly catch me out. Who uses cmd j for duplicate? WHY???? That it is NOT subscription IS their greatest plus, but if i can't do my work that is also an ongoing cost. I use multiple alternative Apps which all have their shortcomings but make up for it in other ways. I am hard pressed to think of anything in the Affinity Apps that makes up for its too often obtuse clumsiness, and am astonished how often I have to spend hunting for ways to simply get out of something or find the tool or method to get basics done. Also I am surprised how often you are thrown into a dialogue to complete an action that should have been able to be done directly in the UI. I go in their forums but all that does is either silence, responses from people who obviously don't know professional graphics (being cheap means Affinity gets lots of amateurs) or an initial wrong response and then the silence. I will continue struggling with Affinity but it is far too much hard work for me to go crazy and say bye bye Adobe.

From my understanding, cmd j (or Ctrl j since I use windows) is pretty standard. The more I use Designer in particular, the more I wish it had some of illustrator's features... but not enough to resubscribe to Adobe. For a professional, I can see where Affinity would be seriously lacking.

Cannot disagree more. Photoshop is irreplaceable. I did try Affinity once and could not even see how people compare. I am a professional and PS has features that no other software comes even close to have. I do feel that the price I pay is worth it. It is obvious that non pros will not need it and can use lower level programs.

I think the vast majority of people who use Photoshop don't actually need Photoshop, but for a professional yeah I agree. Photoshop, Lightroom, and even Illustrator (for a comparison with Designer) have some features I even haven't been able to replace. But someone who digitally paints and maybe does some light photo editing and vector work like myself will save a ton of money moving away from the Adobe suite.

@@madameberry No actually it was about me comparing csp with affinity. I followed you because I too use affinity for my work. Yes it did seem like you were deleting my comments, but there could be another reason for it. It had happened to me on other channels and mostly it happens when you have some filter set in place and it removes the comment if that comment contains any of those words, they also leave subscribers with no choice but to unsubscribe. If it was intentional it is completely understandable because many youtubers filter comments when they are doing paid promotions and delete them too. If it was unintentional it is still all good, at least unlike other youtubers you reached out and clarified. It is your channel, run it as you want it, you dont need to apologize for anything. I followed you back. I make small games so art is one of the aspects of it. I am planning to post videos when I am done with my studying. Stay classy, see you around. =)

I noticed that you use Windows instead of Mac OS. The last 10 years (kind-of like Adobe has) Apple has become a company of Nazi's making their computers and platform walled off from DIYers and Moders who want to mold their own unique solutions out of their Apple computers and Mac OS. While Microsoft isn't much or any better in a number of ways at least you can save A TON of money using a Windows system over MacOS AND you can customize it in a way that;s unique to YOU and ADDITIONALLY you can UPGRADE them in the future with new processors, RAM, hard drives etc to further extend your original investment in the computer. I'm seriously thinking of switching to Windows 11 Pro...

@@madameberry Do you mean that the visual design of the user interface in Windows 11 is very Mac like? I would 100% agree from what I've seen of it--that's also part of the reason I'm considering switching. Not quite as nice as the MacOS but really close to as nice--plus you get all the other benefits of using Windows...

@@madameberry Yes I know Microsoft is basically as bad as Apple BUT at least with Windows systems you can save A LOT of money vs. Mac systems on the initial purchase PLUS you can custom configure it anyway you want for cheap. It used to be the case that Apple systems had a good amount of expansion possibilities but for the last 5 years they;ve just shut that option down almost completely. This said I do love the visual design of the Mac OS and the way system files are organized but just not sure any more if its worth continuing with Mac OS for these reasons when there are so many compelling advantages to Windows.
Adobe is horrible. So I tried the alternative
