A 300 pound person won't feel a lot of cold ever because of their mass alone existing heats them up, so they would never blanket the baby adequately. They can at best tell the baby might be cold by touching it's hands (hands are extremities and have pathetic mass, specially for a baby). Unlike a 10 pound baby, which basically isn't generating enough heat ever. The baby has such a lower mass that, even with a high metabolism, that under cold conditions it'll be frozen in no time. They simply have too much area relative to their mass. Now to horses: besides hair, they weight a lot more than humans, they have muscle under the skin, they don't shake like us when cold. Big animals only have to take care of caloric intake to keep warm. A Moose is at high temperature also because it's big. So is a polar bear. Being big is excellent for thermoregulation. Your volume grows with roughly with r³, your area with r². If you are big enough, you simply won't have enough heat exchange to be cold eventually, tho it should be observed that a certain species used to persistence hunt for a reason... We cooked them big animals up chasing them. So they lost the game to physics if they can't kill the running monkey.

Animals are not like humans. Most mammals are perfectly suited to cold environments. When you see ice on a horse's eyelashes, that's a good thing because it means that the animal is retaining all of its body heat and as such there's no body heat escaping and causing the ice and snow to melt. That's why they have fur, so the snow sitting on them doesn't directly touch their skin so they don't get cold ;-;

What do wild horses do? some wild horses freeze to death in the wild like the world nobody said all horses need it its situational, like any proper animal care You leave fleas and ticks on your dogs/cats? Those are natural. Ever clip their nails? Those grow natural bro.

I grew up in Minnesota. We’d get to -40 with the wind chill at times and the best our horses got was a lean to. They’d gather around with the eldest at the middle and just chill out of the wind. They were just fine. My pony only got a blanket when he was about 38 years old and stopped putting on a healthy weight. He only went one winter like that though. Snow on the back means their body is properly insulated and they don’t feel the cold.

Fr. One of my rescue horses was a 5yr old that came with his winter coat on even though it was barely november. The poor thing had to keep it on because he was too behind on growing a winter coat and had never been without it in less than 50°, until the next spring and he hasn’t worn it since. We still have it in case of a bad blizzard, but he’s only ten now and has consistently grown good winter coats

It all depends on the horse. Most do not need blankets, that’s true. But if a horse is clipped for show, has been kept inside for a time, transported to a cold place, is sick, elderly or just a hot blood with a thin build and short coat naturally… any of those reasons can warrant a blanket. You also get different kinds of blankets for different purposes. A winter rug is what we’re discussing here, but a light absorbent “cooler” may be used to dry off a wet or sweaty horse. A fly sheet may be used just to keep bugs off a sensitive horse. It just depends on the individual animal’s needs

The snow layers on top of their coat and when you move it back its dry near the skin, and that keeps them warm. I only ever blanket my horses when i see that they’re getting too cold on those days/nights that are just too rough. Especially my smaller mare, she does get pretty cold sometimes😂
@Maplebear12038 ай бұрын
Yeah I only really see a point in blanketing during really cold spells or where this weather isn't normal and therefore the horse doesn't have a winter coat to speak of like that freak snowstorm that came through Texas or even for a horse that just doesn't grow a good winter coat cuz genetics are weird and some just don't

It's actually healthier to keep them bare. Often the heat melts snow into coats & they get wet which is deadly in super wintery conditions
@elliott_hunter05108 ай бұрын
The horses you see blanketed usually are show horses that get their hair clipped, they need it because their hair is short. If they aren’t clipped, you should blanket them unless it’s below 30 degrees F. Otherwise they will start to sweat and can get pneumonia. Either way, horses don’t mind cold weather. If they have a thick coat then there’s no need to blanket, my horses all grow in a nice thick coat and I’ve only blanketed them like 3 times when it got super cold (for Tennessee, the weather is weird here so I’m careful abt blanketing)

Grew up on a big horse ranch. The only horses that were blanketed were the ones being used regularly and would get all sweaty. They Ned big heavy blankets. The others unless it’s a thick heavy blanket will flatten down there hair and loose their insulation properties of the natural fur. I’ve seen boarded horses with thin blankets provided by their owners standing beside our horses with no blankets shivering 🥶. Hope this clears it up. I grew up in Alberta Canada 🇨🇦 and it gets crazy cold. -40 degrees you feed them lots because there bodies use it he food to keep themselves warm. A shelter just to get out of the wind really helps as well. Other than that they are giant poof balls of fur in the winter.

Working on a farm, I remember a lot of new workers asking why we put pajamas on our horses. $5-$10 million dollar horses get blankets; if left without them, they would naturally grow a much thicker and more coarse coat to regulate. They had to serve as "horse models" and had to look shiny all the time. Not a normal horse's winter look.

I have an OTTB mare who is out in the snow and ice without a blanket and is loving it. When I first got her though, it took about two maybe three winters (I’ve had her for about 20 years now, and she is a still just fine and healthy without her winter blanket), as she was always kept inside and her winter coat would not fully grow to the length I would be happy with. The first few winters though, for as much as possible, we would leave her out without a blanket and only put her blanket on if she shivers and if the weather gets bad. When her winter coat finally grew out, whoa mama! She’s as warm as toast even in a blizzard. Read up on any medical books or ask your vet before assuming or “humanizing” your animals. Horse hair stands at 14 different stations, which will regulate how much heat is trapped within their fibers. Putting a blanket on them, stops their hair from rising and lowering naturally. My winter fluff muffins all go out in all kinds of weather and often time, resist blanketing when we try to blanket them before say a freezing rain forecast. We do have blankets for all of them, but they are all in the barn collecting dust. Go figure.

I recommend if you don't know how a horse grows their winter coat, to look it up. (This is not aimed at the creator but anyone who doesn't know) growing up not blanketing the horses in the winter i thought it was odd that it's such a normal thing, cause I learned blankets were an as needed thing, we had an older horse and one winter she wasn't doing will (she was 30 years old) and needed the added protection
