I think that the issue with the lifestyle of most people in the US or in any developed countries, is what’s considered normal is actually luxury, like eating out even if it’s just mcdonalds, or not making your own coffee.. i migrated here when i was 17 and stuff like that are considered luxury where I was born.. driving an airconditioned car and living in an airconditioned home are also luxury…

What is wrong with an annual budget?
@jrwheeler81
@jrwheeler81 2 жыл бұрын
@@donaldlyons17 It's totally unrealistic for the average person/family. You have absolutely no way of knowing what unplanned/unexpected expenses might come up during the course of the year. Ever heard of emergencies??? When you own a home, things break and need to be fixed/replaced. Cars break. There can be unexpected medical expenses that come up if someone gets sick or injured and is unable to work. There can be job losses or reduction of income. There are WAY too many variables at play with an annual budget that make it nearly impossible to follow and stick to. A monthly budget is MUCH more sustainable and realistic.
@donaldlyons17
@donaldlyons17 2 жыл бұрын
@@jrwheeler81 I used to give myself a 14k yearly budget and that worked BUT prices were less than I spent on average so 2/3 of the money was spent each year from income on average. My point is a yearly budget works but likely because expenses for years remained similar.

I know several families who do annual budgets, because the majority of their income only comes in the fall. They are very careful throughout the year and watch their priorities. Those parents know if they spend too much in the spring, their kids won't have new shoes for school in August. You bet they watch every dollar.

I update my budget anytime there is a change in expenses such as: The cost of gas goes up; Utilities go up; Insurance goes up [house, car, medical premiums, cost of medications]. Hopefully you will get raises or bonuses that trigger a budget update too. What you don't do is change your budget to allow yourself to waste money on wants vs needs. Once financially sound [no debt] then you can upgrade to include some wants, but do so in a responsible way so a financial nose dive doesn't occur.

@Unknown Freedom @JML I have an investment account and no debts but even with no debts these days by the time I pay for all the insurance I need which is, workman's comp. general liability, homeowners, health, and auto, and pay the taxes I have to then live out of what's left it's still tight. My work slows down in the winter months and I usually have to use some of my savings to make ends meet in the winter. I have gotten a job in the winter time before to make ends meet but they are usually just minimum wage type temporary jobs. I'm a self employed painter and painting doesn't pay what it used to because all the illegal immigrants have driven the prices down and I've been doing the same job for 30 years and I can't get a job working for someone that would pay more than I make and I don't have enough time to get a second job during my busy season. I've been working a good financial plan since 1992 and I first heard of Dave Ramsey in 95 but I was already doing what he teaches and I didn't even buy a house until I had saved up the cash and that took me 25 years to do. By the time I've gotten everything a person needs without any debt my job no longer really pays enough to save up for any significant retirement and the only reason I've been able to do that much is because I never married or had children. I'm 54 and going to college is out of the question because by the time I got a degree I would be retirement age. I'm not the college type or I would have done that when I finished Highschool anyway. It's just hard for the working class when people had rather hire people that are here illegally that doesn't speak our language and does inferior work because they are cheap labor. I would like for people to know that there are some of us out here that are following the rules and doing everything right and still have to be concerned about money. You don't get rich unless you have a very very good carrier or find something to sell on a national platform like FPU....haha. My house is paid for and I've always driven trucks and vans I could pay cash for but I'm getting the same prices for my work that I did in the late 90s and early 2000s. Everyone that has hired illegal immigrants has played their part in robbing people like me. When I got into painting if you worked for yourself you could make as much as if you went to college but that's not true today; not even close. The industry I'm in, the housing industry, collapsed out from under me. This is also why there is a housing shortage with inflated housing costs.

It's a huge lifestyle change for some because of how out of control their spending has always been. All of a sudden you have to be OK with not constantly getting new clothes, new tech, making time for and learning to cook your own food, etc. So yeah pretty similar to what you said, if someone's been eating junk for their entire life...it's much easier said than done to stop, eat healthy, and exercise regularly.

I find the best budgeting practice is to approach it this way: - If you are a beginner, you need to check that thing once a week or more. - Especially if you have no financial knowledge or experience - Once you get going then you can move to just once a week or once a month - After several months and you have the debt paid off or almost paid off you can just go once a month for only 30 minutes to an hour in budgeting!

A little over thirty years ago we got our first PC. I bought Quicken software and now have over thirty years of records showing everything we spent and what we spent it on. It seems more useful for me than a budget. As Dave said in this segment, "Every month is different." An extreme example is the plumbing leak we had a few weeks ago. The plumber had to tear into the drywall to fix it, so it took a carpenter to fix the drywall, over $4000 in total. Dave would say to use the emergency fund, but it really wasn't all that much money, just not able to be budgeted.

So, you’re not familiar at all with Dave’s plan. That is not an emergency, nor does it qualify as one. That’s a budget line item: home repairs. Your house will need repair. Your car will need repair. So when you do your budget, you have lines for those things. You put money aside for them so when you need it, you pay cash. Your plumbing issue is 100% budgetable! See the difference between just tracking what you spend and budgeting your money?

$90-something thousand a year. Debt is under $80k. No mortgage. You can make do and pay it off within the year. Cheap cars, no fancy leases. Or even keep the cars - their income and outgoings balance is quite nice. 15 months tops. That leaves more than enough to pay the gas, food, utilities. No second job needed. Just no frivolities.

I do find it helpful to have an annual budget, and break that into months. Because for instance, I don't have any heating costs during the summer, but if I don't set aside money for oil during the summer months then there isn't gonna be enough come winter.

All you broke people whose receipts blow across store parking lots, that was our starting point. Keep them, categorize them and track your spending. It’s where you will figure out where your money goes. Then develop your budget using these Cash Envelope categories WITH LIMITS. Then add in bills, savings, and sinking funds. It’s worth it!!

The whole beans and rice diet is what my parents did when i was a kid.... turns out all the carbohydrates and no protein DESTROYED all of their kids health. Now i CAN'T eat those things. I have type one diabetes with adult onset despite being super healthy and in good shape and the diet i have to keep is sooooo expensive. The same is true for my brother's and sisters and we have traced it to our childhood diet😢

Beans contain protein. And he doesn’t mean literally. He means change your shopping habit and only buy what you need.
@raedorin979
@raedorin979 8 күн бұрын
@@BlueDauntless beans have about 15gm of protein per CUP along with 45gm of carbohydrates making a terrible source of protein for diabetics limited to 100 gm of carbohydrates a day with a 100 gm protein requirement. The only viable sources of protein for someone with those macronutrient requirements is a high meat diet.... meat is expensive. And he means change your shopping habits as in "don't eat meat". But that's not a realistic option for a lot of people. I challenge anyone who thinks they can come up with a 100carb/100protein a day meal plan (soy, gluten, peanut free home due to allergies) for a family of 6 either without meat or for less than 1000 a month to post it here. I don't think it can be done. Caloric requirements are about 1600 a day when balanced between adults teens and small kids.
