William Hartnell, even in the worst of stories he treated the show as if it was golden. Never a dull moment when he's on screen. :)

This story is ok. It's not amazing nor is it terrible. It's one of those stories which has some good moments, like the scene from this video, but for the most part is a forgettable one. I will say that the Sensorites are quite bland though, they didn't really feel threatening enough for them to base a 6-part story on them. If it had been shrunk down to a 4 part story, I think it would have been a bit better and easier to sit through.

Ι liked the story, but I can see why people consider it a ok story, it has the slowest pacing it could have. Yet again from the first 3 doctors, Hartnell was the one I fisinshed faster. He had a charm as the Doctor who nobody else replicated again. And I say that as my favorite Doctors are Troughton, Baker and Pertwee (who I believe also had a charm that can't be replicated even how much they try (I look at Smith's doctor now)).

Watching this made me think of something said by a more recent Doctor: "When I was younger, I was a much older man." Watch the Tenth Doctor story 'Planet Of The Ood', and the Doctor explains to Donna about the proximity of Ood Sphere to Sense Sphere. I love continuity like that.

Don't forget, the Doctor was quite ready to smash one of the cave peoples' head in with a rock in the very first story. Also in that, his fear and anger with Barbara and Ian for entering the TARDIS is chilling. I always have the suspicion that, had he been able to control the TARDIS properly, he'd have been quite happy to drop them off somewhere distant and remote, to preserve his secret.

I think it's because of the way he enunciates, but when the Doc says that he'll "be more trouble than you bargained for", it always reminds me of Obi-Wan Kenobi. But either way, what a great sentence that sums up the Doctor's entire life and personality! Don't mess with them unless you want a splitting headache!

A lot of people below are saying most of Hartnell's episodes are missing. This is not really true. All of season one exists, minus one story. All of season 2 exists minus half of a story. Season 3 was hit hard though as there are only 3 full surviving episodes of that left. However, a lot did survive from the Hartnell era. It was really Troughton's era that suffered the most in the black and white era. But yeah, there are still PLENTY of Hartnell episodes.

DragonRiderW16 power of the Daleks? Not ENTIRELY lost. Rebuilt. Yes yes with inferior animation, but the audio is genuine and little details still taken into account. It still beats the heart of a Doctor Who story...a landmark one at that as Troughton’s first stretch of his legs into his era as the Doctor.

Hm. I see what you're saying, but I suppose the difference between us is, I don't mind if it's a little silly. Doctor Who was never marketed as a dark series, but started out as a kids' show with some more melancholy and self-reflecting themes. And believe me, I love when there's a darker arc or theme behind a story that makes you stop and think, but again, that wasn't the original point of the series. I don't think there's anything wrong with a story that says 'this is about a time traveler and his friends getting into mischief and that's it'. And while I know The Gunfighters wasn't a fan favorite for its singing and somewhat silly plot, I don't think its lack of 'humanity is dark and bad and you should think about it' is what makes people dislike it.

I won't be surprised "I don't make threats but I do keep promises" would be something 12th Doctor would say, but with more "capaldi intensity."

You're incorrect. Other than Marco Polo, the whole of his first season (which was 48 weeks long!) exists in full. Of the second season, two episodes of The Crusade are missing. The rest is fine. Only the third season was badly affected by the BBC's junking policies - The Myth Makers, The Massacre, and The Savages are entirely lost; Galaxy 4 and The Celestial Toymaker only have one episode each surviving. The Daleks' Masterplan only has episodes 2, 5 and 10 intact of its 12 episodes (plus the prologue Mission To The Unknown is lost also). The two Hartnell stories at the beginning of season 4 are affected too - The Smugglers is lost, and sadly The Tenth Planet lacks its final episode (the regeneration sequence was saved by being copied onto another tape for inclusion in other BBC programmes). All these stories are available on DVD if you want (unfortunately stretched and distorted to fit on widescreen). I look forward to them eventually being reissued on blu-ray as the BBC wisely chose to make those proper 4:3 aspect ratio. The chances of the BBC ever showing them again is minimal because they're black and white, and strangely some people have a fit if something not colour comes on their telly (the same ones who freak out at black bars onscreen I guess!)

Hey! If Hartnell hadn't accepted the role, there wouldn't have been any Doctor Who in the first place! And I think Colin Baker was more underrated because the BBC fired him for no reason while he could have had an extra season!

For Colin I think Dr Who was in the last chance saloon during his tenure and was about to be thrown out. Changing the Doctor may have bought it another couple of years but the final nail was when the BBC moved it to the suicide slot - in direct competition with Coronation Street. That is when you knew the BBC was determind to kill it off

How the hell did they remove the lock from the TARDIS?
@julietfischer5056
@julietfischer5056 6 жыл бұрын
Early days of the show, before the TARDIS was anything other than a machine or they'd even thought of Gallifrey and Time Lords. As far as anybody knew, the Doctor had invented the TARDIS and was traveling with his granddaughter and his kidnap victims. Jon Pertwee's Doctor was the first to refer to the TARDIS as alive, and Tom Baker's Doctor was the one who started stroking it and talking to it (there's a very funny bit in one episode when Romana thinks he's talking to her and learns he was talking to the TARDIS). Its near-indestructible nature came later on.
@julietfischer5056
@julietfischer5056 4 жыл бұрын
@steve gale - All anyone knew is that he had the TARDIS, but until 'The Time Meddler' there was no mention of any other TARDISes. Susan did once describe the red skies and silver-leaved trees of her homeworld, but 'Time Lords' and 'Gallifrey' weren't mentioned until 'The War Games.' Some viewers might have thought the Doctor invented the TARDIS (reinforced by the non-canonical movies).

There was much less emphasis on continuity when the show began. It was made to be seen once and that was it. This was broadcast nine months into the first season, so anything said in the first few weeks (like the self destruct built into the lock) would have been forgotten about in the hectic bustle of getting the shows made in time. It's unlikely most of the audience would have noticed the discrepancy No story was repeated until into Patrick Troughton's time. Throughout the sixties the TARDIS acquired and lost several abilities and strengths according to the requirements of the story. To answer the specific question of how they physically did it: They had gadgets that looked very much like the handle off my grandmother's cake stand that they could wave around and achieve different clever things with.

@@julietfischer5056 Exactly, that's precisely my point. That people who only acknowledge the show since its return refuse to consider the Classic Series and/or the Classic Doctors to have any depth, darkness or ambiguity. So I tend to point to this scene as a summation that the Doctor is capable of morally ambiguous boasts a la the revival counterparts.

Sensitives: "You're in no position to threaten us!" The Doctor (calm, coyly confident, firm and proudly vindicative) : "No, I don't make threats, but I *DO* keep promises. And I promise you I shall cause you more trouble than you bargained for it *if you don't return my PROPERTY!" And this is how the Destroyer of Worlds, the Time Lord Victorious, the Doctor of WAR is born. It's crazy hoe so many of the Doctor's darker aspects were simply but multi-dimensional character developments from well-esthablished traits and characteristics shown by him since his two earliest incarnations. Hartnell Doctor and Throughton Doctor set the building blocks for what would eventually become the Hybrid.

William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton were the Doctors that the fans owe everything to. David Tennant, Matt Smith and Tom Baker might be more popular but they weren't under the insane pressure that Hartnell and Troughton were dealing with, although Smith came close due to the spectacular success of Tennant and no returning companions to ease the transition. But that was still after Doctor Who was a well established brand. William Hartnell wasn't even sure that it would get off the ground, needing the Daleks to swoop in and save it from getting cancelled. As for Patrick Troughton, he was the very first test of regeneration so if he screwed it up, Doctor Who was finished.
