One of my favorite things about Haikyuu is that every time an antagonist is introduced, you're hard cheering on Karasuno, but once you really get to know any player on any team, you realize they're all teenage volleyball player boys and none of them is a villain and you get to cheering on nearly everyone.

Yeah I was watching a video talking about how Haikyuu has no villains and it is so true. There are rivals, there are opponents, but there is not a single character who is vilified, everyone is human, everyone has their own story. I think that's the magic of this show, it makes you care about everyone, on and off the court, on both sides of the net.

Kuro is my favourite character from Haikyuu, he’s got the energy, but he can be chill. He’s supportive and kind but he can be your worst enemy. Absolutely boss ass character and enhances a lot of characters by just being around them.

This episode is why Suga is my favorite character. He’s mature, thoughtful, and logical. But he still loves volleyball. He’s mature enough to not let his love for volleyball cloud his objective thinking, but loves volleyball enough to keep playing and genuinely enjoy it despite knowing he’s not the best. Kageyama’s got the IQ, Suga’s got the emotional intelligence. I fell in love with Haikyuu in the first episode, but this one really drove it home for me

So true, he's my favorite aswell, he's such a nice guy 😭

What I love is how he explains to Ukai that saying "pick Kageyama" is not him saying "I'm giving up" but actually saying "so I can get more opportunities to play too". Only the winners get to stay on the court, so the more they win, the more chances Suga will have to play as well. It really shows his intelligence and his drive, and absolutely makes him one of my favorites as well.

You'll get used to not being so sure about the opposing teams at first, then by the end of the game find yourself almost rooting for them to win. The writer does an amazing job with making you appreciate something about every single character that shows up on the screen at one point or another.

Lmao I love how Oikawa is the benchmark for "this guy is sus." Your thoughts on casual volleyball is interesting, and something the show will touch on a bit if you stick around. Personally, a super casual atmosphere made it easier for me to start volleyball. I'm not a competitive player by any means, but it was extremely fun and made me enjoy the sport, especially because I went from not knowing how to do a thing to being the best receiver!

Also, no worries, but the pronunciation guide for Kiyoko (the female manager) is "Key-yo-co" Key (like what you use for locks) -yo (like the greeting) -co (like the first half of coat or coal). You're pretty close with "kyo-co", but the "key-yo" should technically be more like one-and-a-half syllables.

'Kenma' means to polish in Japanese (like a cat sharpening its claws?), while 'Kuro' (from Kuroo) means black, and it's a typical name for a black cat in Japan. I'm already a big fan of this show, but hearing your analysis as a player, like about Kageyama's overhead receive technique, makes me feel the realism of this show even more and kind of makes me proud!😆 BTW, every time you joke about Tsukki, it cracks me up.😂

I always look forward to these reactions, I definitely feel like I'm learning new things from your insight, like pointing out the differences in Suga and Kageyama's setting. That's so cool that the animators went to that level of detail! I think I get what you mean about not liking casual sports. It sounds to me that it's a casual attitude toward playing, more than at what level your team is competitively playing, that is disliked. That having the attitude of "I'm just doing this for fun, so I'm not going to give it my all and I don't want to try to improve if it takes actual effort" is someone who shouldn't even bother playing. Like with most things, it takes effort and hard work to excel at something, the people who only want to pursue a sport, or a hobby, while it's easy, but give up when it gets difficult, will never achieve greatness. You definitely don't want someone like that on your team, because they'll just hold you back. It makes me think of a scene from another anime, Sound! Euphonium. It's about a high school band who say their goal is to go to nationals, but it's something that they say, not actually something they work toward. When the new teacher/conductor shows up, he challenges the band on that goal: do they actually want to pursue that goal, or do they just want to have fun? If they say they just want to play for fun, then that's how he'll lead the club. But if they say they actually want to pursue their goal, then he's going to push them, and it won't be easy. He's basically calling out who the casual band members are so they don't drag down the ones who want to compete, because they cannot both inhabit the same space.

I remember Coach Donnie (another Haikyuu reactor who is a vb coach and an art teacher) also complained about Kageyama's toss, 😂😂😂 He said the same thing about the way his hands part. For someone who's supposed to be a genius setter, he has pretty poor setting technique. As someone whose only volleyball knowledge came from haikyuu anime, I thought it looked cool, lol! Specially when watching from Kageyama's POV, it looks like he's parting a curtain so we can watch Hinata spike.😂😂😂 I guess the animators used artistic license more than the actual technique. I thought the spinning balls look cool too, but it turns out to be one of the unrealistic part of haikyuu. 😅😅😅

27:03 A little FIY about the uniform numbers. The third years get the lowest numbers, with Daichi at #1, then Suga at #2, Asahi at #3, then second years, with Noya at #4 and Tanaka at #5, with the 3 subs at #6-#8, followed by the first years, with Kageyama at #9 and Hinata at #10, Tsukki at #11 and Yamaguchi at #12. The same pattern is followed at other high schools. The captain would have a line under his #, as you can see on Daichi's uniform. Usually the captain wears #1, but there are exceptions, with some other schools having their captains wearing #2 or #4. But generally, #1 is captain.

As someone who is very non-competitive I can kind of understand your point of not liking sharing space with people who are in it "for fun". we have totally different goals. Obviously for people who don't care if they have to suffer dreadfully if it means they get to win, having someone like me on their team would be like a slap in the face. They suffered through all that harsh work and training and now they can't even get the payoff of winning cause some shmuck who's just here for a bit of fun hasn't worked hard enough for you to rely on. I always really liked the idea of doing a sport and getting to support each other and do cool things without ever really caring about winning outside of maintaining morale. I got pushed out of those spaces by coaches and team captains who insisted that everyone was more focused on winning at the expense of enjoying it. why you wanna send me to what's basically a marine bootcamp cause I wanna throw/hit a ball with my friends on the weekend? ya know? that and I get way too salty at coaches employing collective punishment like - "I hear jake talked back to a teacher today. sounds to me like yall need to spend the next 2.5 hours running under the sun instead of practice."

When I played, I was never a starter. I was on the practice team and I came in games when we needed extra defense. I always looked at as the starters were as good as they were because they had to play me every practice. I never once took a play off in practice and it was very rare for the starters to get a clean point off me. If that was the only way I could contribute to the team then so be it. I still loved my time playing with those girls and learned a lot about the sport and myself. Also my boyfriend Kuro has made an appearance, let’s goooooooo!!!!!!

@@lachyywhite Suga and Daichi are characters every team needs, and I'll say this about your hate of Tsuki. He's intentionally written that way. But season 4 will make you LOVE HIM and understand it sucks when you play his type but you absolutely love having him on yours. Season 3 is where everybody talks about his growth and that's fine but the two big developments in s4 made me fall in love with the character. Btw went to an AVP tourney in Alabama and came up second. But I had a killer moment, 72 mph serve in wind mate. It was a great feeling to come back

On casual sports. I play badminton casually. Very casually. I just used it as a tool to release steam from work. My workmates introduced me to badminton. Meaning I only started sports waaaay after school. As in I started when I was 23? 24? Very late compared to others. I became decent and bought my own equipment which I still use to this day. Sports is a real investment sometimes but it's so worth it. Me and my husband are quite stingy. That's what we bond over. So maybe he felt betrayed that I started investing on my shoes, my racket, things like that. Because he keeps on saying "you don't need to spend money for exercise. Just borrow a baketball and just shoot your shot, run, whatever" But that never works for me. I can never exercise just for exercise. Especially run. I don't like hearing my own thoughts. I need distractions, or restrictions and goals, aka a game. I need the confines of a game to get me moving. I can't "just run" or "just exercise" I think I have ADHD. 😅 I feel like I got decent, good? Considering I played way later than normal. I get to beat some men in the local badminton club. Sometimes you just need some curiosity to start. Also Now my husband plays even without me. He plays more often badminton and now basketball is out. He has 4 rackets more than me. I have only 1 and I love it. So much for our stingyness 😂

26:38 I know exactly what you mean... I really hated playing volleyball during high school P.E. class because everyone else were casuals. I mean, I really really hated it, because they were just hitting the ball back and forth over the net since most of them don't know how to play. Volleyball would be extremely boring without the "bump, set, and spike" pattern.

26:04 I can relate to you, I'm also an athlete and I've been competing and representing my municipality and province since I was in elementary. Mine's dancesport and it's not a team sport but I have a partner, my province is small and the sport is considerably new in our place. We had difficulty in acquiring materials needed for our sport, we also had difficulty finding a coach to the point that we need to invite a coach from a far away city. It's been hard for us but it's worth it, my partner and I trained hard and we fell inlove with the sport. We achieved countless feats from competing within our school and municipality to representing our municipality and competing with other municipalities to representing our region and competing in a national level. The achievement my partner and I achieved is thanks to the support of our parents and coach, I will always be thankful. We came from a small and remote municipality, but through our hardwork and love for the sport, we achieved a lot. We also made the sport thrive in our municipality, my partner and I always visit our elementary school to teach the students there for free. We're not only competing, we also start teaching other students, we're guiding new little ones and seeing their achievements made us proud. 💜

Lachy, I live in the USA and we have a open gym for everyone that used to play in college and some even semi Olympic competitors. People who play in actually beach tournaments, even some old people that are just absolutely saucy with their sets, hits, you name it. Everyone plays setter and it’s a classic rotation there are some people that will switch if they only want to set and stuff no libero or anything but everyone goes to WIN. Things get really heated and you build friendships and rivalry’s. It’s top level, there are different courts and if you wanna take it easy and chill then play on the lower level court but if you’re coming to win and coming to get better to play against great players then you’ll be on the higher courts. These people play volleyball, travel and just live their life playing the sport it’s crazy. I’m 19 and recently stopped playing but my goodness rewatching haikyuu with you being able to cry in the parts that I didn’t really relate to before. I stopped playing and now asahi and suga’s scene really hit me deep. Thank you for letting us watch this with you, this is really cool to watch a channel that’s about to blow up.
