Saw this at the closest IMAX near me. I was SUPER lucky because after the showing, I went to a viewing area where you can see into the projector room through glass windows. I stayed long after everyone else had left, and the projectionists invited me into the room! They were showing me all the equipment, and because I was so enthusiastic, they told me if I stuck around until the next showing, they'd let me watch them fire everything up. Obviously, I stuck around. I watched them kill the lights in the booth (which was actually a fairly large room), fire up the projector and start the film. I was in there for probably 45 minutes. The whole time they were periodically making sure the film was on track, checking the cam arm that feeds from the reel, and making sure there was no dust on the lens etc. They actually have a button they push that wipes the lens when any dust shows up, then they handed me the remote and let me press it! It was such a cool experience, they even took me into the back where the liquid cooling system was, showed me the audio system, and answered my litany of questions. They were both super cool guys and that elevated the entire experience. I felt so lucky not just to be invited into the room, but then be invited in WHILE the movie was playing. Hearing the noise of the projector, seeing the film flying through it, and seeing the film playing through the viewport windows was just...just so damn cool. Definitely an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life for sure. Oh yeah, and the movie was great too.

That’s absolutely awesome mate and i’m not Jealous at all! 😩😩😩🤥 lol What a privilege to be shown such courtesy by the projection guys, so nice of them. I had e-mailed the manchester printworks re. getting access and maybe filming some footage for the video but they never replied. I should maybe just have chanced my luck in person but we were pushed for time. I will pin this awesome comment for others to see mate, thanks for taking the time to type it up 👍😃 And what theatre was this? Andy ⚡️
@fuzzypanda1684
@fuzzypanda1684 9 ай бұрын
@ElectricGeek It was the Esquire Imax in California. It's a small, independent theater so I think that's why the guys were so chill and laid back. I'm guessing at a bigger theater they wouldn't do that. But if it's not too far, you should go back and maybe you'll get lucky! I didn't do anything other than stay outside watching longer than anyone else, and the whole time I was rattling off facts about the film, the projector etc, not that they could hear any of it. I think they just saw that I was enthusiastic and not just another person to casually walk up, stay for 3 minutes and leave. The guy was just as enthusiastic explaining everything to me as I was listening and asking questions lol.

I saw it on Saturday in Kansas City in regular 70mm, upper seat, far left. I loved the film and cinematography. So I'm flying to Dallas Friday to see it in IMAX 70mm, and snagged a central seat in the theater. It's the closest location to my home. I saw the 70mm film presentation & the colour sections of the film reminded me of an old AGFA colour slide film i once used, which had an old masters oil painting look about it, which suited the time period the story was set in.

I saw Oppenheimer 3 times on 70mm IMAX from the best seat. Each time I feel better. I also watched it on digital IMAX laser. The digital IMAX has a bassier sound system. The 70mm IMAX was simply magical. The first time, I felt Nolan gave his best, a good film for sure. The second time, I felt Nolan was left leaning, and wasted time arguing for Oppenheimer in the last 45 min. The third time, I felt Oppenheimer is the perfect biopic. Changing anything would have ruined it. I love it for what it is now.

We're off to the IMAX next Friday when we hope everything here will be completed so we're able to get up there without having to rearrange anything. Thank you for mentioning my channel and linking to it and one of the IMAX videos. But what I want to know, is what did your wife think of it? John.

@@ElectricGeek I keep thinking about this video of your trip to Manchester. It's exciting to know you actually did this. I hope it inspires others. We're off to the IMAX next Friday and our show is at 2pm but today I managed to get hold of the Chief and I'm going in at 9.30am if all goes to plan. That will be to shoot video of him lacing up the print if all goes to plan. I wouldn't be able to do it justice for the 2pm show as I'd have to get into the auditorium before the film started. It's wonderful that your wife really enjoyed the film too and then looked up the real life story. That's just the sort of thing that I tend to do after seeing a film based on real events. I haven't been able to rectify the problem with the top and bottom masking so it looks like I'm going to have to completely dismantle that part of the home cinema to find out what is going on. It's damaged the motor but even swapping it out didn't solve it. Rather annoying, to say the least. John.

Great video, glad you got to see it in 70mm! Our IMAX here is a bit of a shambles really. Not state of the art and you can tell. About an hour into the screening, when Matt Damon shows up, the sound started cutting out every 30 seconds or so. That went on for long enough that my wife and a few other audience members went out to find a staff member (no-one in the projection booth, why would there be?) and after about 15 minutes, they stopped the movie. We waited for about half an hour and they started it back up, telling us they'd wound it back 15 minutes. In actual fact, it had been wound forward about 5 minutes or so, so we were seeing further than we'd seen. They stopped it again, wound it back again and it played fine for another hour and a half. Until the dropouts started happening again every 10 seconds. We were 20 mins from the end. They stopped the movie and gave us 2 free tickets each. I loved the movie, but it was the worst, most disturbed screening I've ever been to and I haven't seen the end. Will try again next week. With 6 showings a day, I don't get how something like that could happen. Big mess. Your comments about digital vs film - I remember one of the last projected movies I went to see. My brother and I went to see My Bloody Valentine 3D (digitally shot and projected) and the following day we saw the remake of Friday The 13th (shot and projected on film). Not great movies but the difference was so apparent. The latter was beautiful. The colour, the contrast, the scratches, the dirt, the grain, the judder, the pops and hiss of the sound. I miss it, there's nothing like it. I love the imperfections of film, but in general, even if you were looking at something completely clean shot on 35mm, even without nostalgia, the picture is so much richer. Not bemoaning digital, I work with digital cameras for a living, but film is still the gold standard to me. I'm in the Nolan camp!

Fantastic comment my friend! Thanks for taking the time to post it 👌 Really sorry to hear about your shambolic viewing at your local imax. Disappointing to hear. Hopefully they get themselves sorted out. At least they refunded you 👍 Yeah re. Digital vs film, i standby all my comments made in the video but i don’t stress that i also enjoy digitally shot content too. I’m not a one or the other type person, i think they both have their technical & aesthetic pros & cons but i think this film demands a viewing preferably on film. Nolan has gone out his way to shoot on large format film and showcase the old ways. Least we can do is celebrate that and enjoy the glorious results 😃 Thanks for watching mate 👍

Wait, you saw it in 1570 IMAX yeah? There should ABSOLUTELY be someone in the projection booth at all times! I was super lucky when I went to the closest IMAX near me, after the showing the projectionist actually let me into the room to see all the equipment. Then, because I was so enthusiastic, they told me if I stuck around until the next showing, they'd let me watch them fire everything up. Obviously, I stuck around. It was such a cool experience, they even took be into the back where the liquid cooling system was, showed me the audio system...sorry, I'm rambling now, but my point is, there should be a projectionist at all times with a film showing. Heck, there were not one, but two projectionists in the room at mine. If it's a digital projection, maybe they don't need to be there, but with an $80,000 physical film, yeah, it's inexcusable that the booth was empty.

It was most likely mastered digitally, which I would assume not be a 16K digital master. The way we do film is we capture it in film, we scan it and master digitally, and print it to film again.

I appreciate that is the norm but my understanding was this was done photochemically? Colour grading etc From anything i’ve read anyway. U sound like ur in the industry tho so u’ll know better than me. It’ll no doubt have a 4K DI for DCP screenings and for the blu rays down the line but if it’s been master led digitally to 4k and then re. printed to film stock, then surely what was the point in making a fuss over the 15/70mm imax screenings? It doesn’t seem like something Nolan himself would promote or even want in the first place?

I totally agree having Oppenheimer forever burned into my brain now. It’s a different level of immersion compared to digital. Although i would put my imax 3d screening of avatar: way of water high up there. Not every ones cup of tea but i found that incredibly immersive. Like living in the film. Made pandora conceivably inhabitable and not just cgi wizardry. When i stuck on the disney 4k stream i found it not half the film i thought it was initially. The imax experience had propped it up big time for me but that speaks to the power of the imax experience be it film or digital. I seen the dark knight at the Glasgow science centre imax back in the day. The only one we had at the time. A memorable one also. The joker upside down always sticks in my mind from that viewing 👌 Thanks for the comment mate 😃

There is six theatres in Canada that can show the 70mm IMAX version. I live within walking distance of one of them. 😀 Yes, I went to see it. Even got an IMAX film strip with three movie frames on it, plus a title frame.

@@ElectricGeek Just live in the right place and attended the right day (one of three) that the film strips were given out. Didn't know until after it, that they only gave them out on three days, so just got lucky. They sell for quite a bit on ebay. 😀 Not that I would sell mine.

I hear you I ended up driving 10 hours to see it in 1570 IMAX and it was dark and out of focus the whole time a total letdown and we have a laser IMAX that's only 3 hours away I should have went to the laser ones if I didn't own the 1570 was going to look so bad and take so long to get there

That’s because on 15/70mm IMAX, the imperfections are more noticeable. I’m not sure the IMAX camera lenses are supposed to be for close up shots that so prevalent in the film. I noticed the odd focusing too, I also noticed projector flicker. The cinematic landscape shots were perfect though, they looked entirely real. I suppose that’s what the IMAX cameras are for.

If i had the time I definitely would've driven from Colorado to Arizona to see it in IMAX 70mm. But i got to see it in regular 70mm in near Denver at least and the digital IMAX screen near me is about 71' high so i think i got a good experience.

Absolutely, sounds like u’ve done well seeing it 70mm and digital imax 👌 The title to this video may seem a little showy but it’s just to get people to click and watch. There’s no elitism here from me. I was just fortunate the stars aligned re. childcare, time off etc for me to get down and see it in 15/70mm imax. Thanks for watching and for ur comment mate 👍😃

@@ElectricGeek Personally I'd love for him to stick with original projects than do a Bond movie. If he does I will still be there day one, but his post Batman run has been so incredible, I'm more excited to see what his next original project will be. Also Tenet, as wonky as it was, was basically a sci-fi Bond movie. 😂

I’m a life-long bond fan so i’m massively biased to the idea of him re-booting bond. I think he’s open to also. It’s now or never really for him i think but i totally get where ur coming from. Tenet is a great movie and ur right it’s clearly inspired by bond

I went to see it in IMAX 70 MM at Cineplex Langley. I don't know. Didn't think it was IMAX worthy. Maybe because I was seated 5th row from the screen. Or perhaps I would have to see it again.
@ElectricGeek

The movie itself wasn’t Imax worthy? I thought it lent scope and scale to it. It’s not a big action, summer blockbuster but it was an all-star cast, dealing with some pretty heavy themes. I really enjoyed it but i guess it’s not for everyone. Maybe a second viewing would help like u say. Maybe too much hype going in? Thanks for the comment all the same pal 👍😀

I'm from Manchester so the Printworks is easily accessible to me and I've seen this film a couple of times there. And I will be going again. It really is the best format, so it's weird to me when digital formats are referred to as the latest tech, because they're literally downgrades, but they're constantly marketed as if they're better, at people who might not have ever seen film before. Seeing it in this rare format really reminds me of what actual film looks like.

Lucky u having it on your doorstep! 😀 i would certainly see it again were i not up in Scotland. Can’t justify repeat trips sadly. I don’t think it’s fair that digital imax has been branded ‘lie-max’. Yeah ok it’s not the original ‘film’ version of it but it’s still a fantastic experience and most films these days are shot digitally so i have no issue with it. They have to move with the times as a business / brand so it’s understandable. I would say what should happen is that 70mm should be marketed MORE and really pushed as special. Oppenheimer has really helped with that at least but really it’s down to filmmakers, directors, studios etc to push films being made on film. The cinema chains will then react to that accordingly like has been proven with Oppenheimer. Anyway, that’s just my two bob’s worth. Thanks for the comment mate 👍
