I was privileged to command a recce troop of seven ferrets. We used to heat up tins of sausages, steak and kidney pudding and irish stew on the exhaust manifold of the ferrets. Without improvised mods they were very cold in winter but not too noisy with goggles, 😅 headphones and intercom. Stuck on top I was the eyes and ears for the driver. A good little car.

They were, the British Army had them in Suffield, Canada for armoured corps training exercises. Great little vehicles for bopping around in! When the windshield is removed, the driver actually shimmies in through the open gap instead of getting into the top! Pre-select gearbox, so you position the lever in the next gear you want to change to, then kick down on the gear change pedal (NOT a clutch) to select it. Not so much on the Ferrets, but on the Saladin and Saracen (bigger versions of the same mechanical layout) you could get a bad change resulting in a false neutral. That would slam the gear change pedal back out at you to twice its normal distance, and if you weren't quick enough, it would take off your kneecap on the steering wheel! Oh, and as for the noise, it wasn't an issue since both driver and commander wore headsets and used the intercom to talk to each other. One of the most hated jobs on these: Changing a tire! Not changing the wheel, but actually replacing the tire. Look at the video and you'll see the lug nuts in the inner ring. Outside those is another ring of rim nuts, all of which had to be removed to split the two halves of the rim in order to change the (run-flat) tires!!

You had to be doing something really really wrong to roll a ferret, especially a Mk 1, the Mk 2 or even the Mk 5 was not top heavy and stuck to the ground very well. The Fox used to catch people out as that was a bit top heavy and twitchier steering but even that had a worse reputation for roll overs than it actually did roll over. Odd that the Piranha only had NATO STANAG protection level three, same as the Ferret, even the Lav III version only has base protection up to 7.62mm rounds, add on protection increases that to 14.5mm rounds
