kristen lindsay Ok... Thank you because I was wondering why Wrightsville Beach and south of it with Carolina Beach and Kure Beach was included. I was surprised they skipped going a few more blocks to Ft Fisher; another surprise was when they were “leaving the outer banks” they were actually ENTERING onto Wrightsville Beach, which is an island. But I did love this video too. For a moment I was thinking, oh, I could start saying I live on the OB! 🎉 I’m not originally from here so I was almost fooled. 😂

This is a nice video but just to clarify, you do know that the "Outer Banks" a.k.a. "OBX", actually only spans from the Virginia state line to Okracoke Island. Once you're south of Okracoke, you're no longer in the Outer Banks of N.C. South of Okracoke to Willmington is simply known as the N.C. barrier islands.

I travelled from Georgia and of course passed through South Carolina, there's a neat place called South Of The Border. Wilmington is not part of the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks runs from Va. down to Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Just saying.🤙
@NickJohnson4 жыл бұрын
Depends on your perspective. The traditional "OBX" you speak of essentially branded themselves that way. In actuality all of them are the outer banks - or barrier islands- or whatever you want to call them.
@brettbarley4 жыл бұрын
@@NickJohnson In that case, most of East Coast is the "Outer Banks" of the USA. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ashleighelizabeth59164 жыл бұрын
@@NickJohnson no it does not depend on your perspective and it was not some kind of branding done by local marketers. The Outer Banks have consisted of the beaches from the Virginia line to Ocracoke Island only since before I was born. South of that point are the Core and Shackleford Banks, beyond that is the Crystal Coast, and further south are the remaining barrier islands of North Carolina. Don't argue with the people born and raised in the area with family that has lived in the area since before the Revolution unless you want to be labeled a touron (one of the very few things the Netflix show got right about us BTW). You see it's all the name, OUTER meaning away from the mainland. The islands and peninsula in question are those furthest away from the mainland. Now at one time you might have been able to argue that Portsmouth Island was part of the Outer Banks but since the creation of Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Cape Lookout National Seashore it's been customary to group Portsmouth with the other Core and Shackleford Banks comprising the Cape Lookout Seashore. Tell somebody born and raised on the Crystal Coast they are part of the Outer Banks and they are going to give you a very funny look. Tell somebody born and raised on the Outer Banks that Carolina Beach or the Crystal Coast is part of the Outer Banks and they are going to do the same.

as a native of NC, living on Oak Island, a southern NC barrier island, we do NOT consider this the outer banks. We consider the areas, the strip of land outside pamlico sound and surrounding areas the outer banks, NOT Pleasure Island, famous for Carolina and Kure Beaches. But TY for the video, our beaches are beautiful, tho they are becoming more congested as houses pop up daily. U shoulda been here 50 yrs ago, calm, spacious places of serene beauty, plenty of great fishing. BTW, I jump the ferry when going from oak island to pleasure island, multiple ferries, cheap and great fun, u might see pods of dolphins, many seabirds, etc.
@NickJohnson4 жыл бұрын
Can you take your car on that ferry?
@mikewilliams26874 жыл бұрын
@@NickJohnson Yes, and its been 6 months or so, but for years it has only cost 5 bucks and saves me many miles of driving, affording a beautiful trip as well. Just put up your convertible top, as the tourists will feed the gulls, and...well u can figure out the results, lol. Go for it and ENJOY! there are several ferries up and down our coast, many named for state universities(the ferry boats) Most have stations with pamphlets, refreshments, etc. The one at Oak Island is no longer manned, and the keepsakes they once sold are no longer available there, but I think some of the longer ferry trip stations are still manned with gift shops. They run all day, 30 minute intervals or more, depending on the trip length, and I think the longest is well over an hour up in northern area. Before I sold my cabin cruiser, wife and I loved to go out 25 miles or more, where the water becomes clear blue(beyond the silt from Cape Fear river here), the flying fish are amazing, and the fishing great. So great on a hot day to dive in as deep as I could go, until my buoyancy would shoot me back to surface.

It's true that this location is very far south of OBX. However, growing up in NC my family and I always went to Wilmington and Carolina/Kure Beach. This video is nice but there is more to do than what's mentioned: Carolina Beach has a decent little boardwalk area with some mighty fine donuts; the very south end of the island is home to not only the aquarium (which is really very well done, considering its size) but also Fort Fisher, a Civil War era Confederate outpost and site of a pivotal battle. The road doesn't end where u did at Kure. You missed the best part which is Ft. Fisher. You drive on a completely wild island that is only sand, dunes, beach and backwater estuaries behind it...that's where you would've been impressed with beauty. The only accessible by boat Lea Island is where you wanna be if you're looking for an area comensurable to the Outer Banks. You won't be disappointed. And the 26 mile long Topsail Island is my favorite, especially the very south end, which is the north end of Lea Island separated by the inlet. If u get in a boat and really explore, you'll find enough cool spots, islands etc that you'd never find it necessary to go anywhere else. Take care.

Filmed in and around Charleston. The Wreck is a rather famous seafood joint in Mt Pleasant near Shem Creek. You can see Morris Island lighthouse in the background of some of the marsh scenes. And I recognized the bridge over the inlet between Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms. I was born and raised on the OBX but Charleston is one of my favorite places on earth outside of North Carolina.

The whole Carolina coastal area was ancient and decrepit when I first ventured there in 1964. I can only manage what it is like now!?!

All I want to know is what do they call those bench seats that lean over the sides of decks. The Outer banks is the only place that I have seen these benches. @5:39

We generally don't consider the South beaches and Emerald Isle the Outer Banks. If you want an OBX T-shirt or bumper sticker, gotta go to the North Beaches, lol.
@NickJohnson4 жыл бұрын
Yes but lots of people don't get that. Technically they're all outer banks
@kirstencourtney87924 жыл бұрын
@@NickJohnson Yah, technically I suppose, but if you tell your friend you're going to the outer banks, they're usually thinking Nags Head or Hatteras, etc.

I have been to Carolina and Kure Beach. Very nice. I have been to Holden Beach, Ocean Isle, Oak island. All are nice.
@NickJohnson4 жыл бұрын
Me too. Way down by Holden it's just so desolate and boring. Do you like quieter like Holden or more goin on like Carolina Beach?
@KP-do2ss4 жыл бұрын
@@NickJohnson Carolina beach is my favorite because there's things to do. On the other hand I also like Holden Beach because my Dad always took us there as kids. Have you ever been to Ocean Isle? It is a very classy and clean beach. A few things to do there. Very nice. I like Carolina because they have deep sea fishing trips for my husband. Also they have the carnival and midnight cruises.

I think they should have left the barrier islands undeveloped! I say leave some space for the wildlife. Overdevelopment in hurricane prone areas = disaster waiting to happen. I wonder how many of those structures are built for a category 5 ??? Same problem up & down the east coast...not just North Carolina. Anyway, thanks for sharing Nick!
