The flashback in regards to 6:07 listening to the radio, reading books and storytelling while young, well I can relate with that, growing up😊. From community work, to humanitarian aid, to the detours and mountaineering, well that's a curious mind.😅 Key lessons am taking home in regards to pursuing your interests: Starting early, doing adequate research and having the conversations with mentors and networks. I connect this with the advice from Dr. Gladys, during a talk session last Thursday: Company, Curiosity and Co-creating. Thank you Dr. Gladys Ng'etich for the episode. It is enriching.

Teachers kids always shines in academic. Ruth you nailed it I taught with your mom. She loved reading novels to her self and to her students. We used to encourage each other on how we desired seeing our kids excel in academic. I will testify as one of your teachers, I saw the Pontiac of excellence in you Ruth when you were in grade 4 and 5 when I would see you taking position 1. I observed you reading a story book. You mom and I would go to bookshops to search for books for our kids, your mom would take an hour plus reading a novel. Your mom loved reading! I am so proud of you Ruth. Inspire others. This is a true story of Ruth ❤❤❤

Oh my goodness, I love your guest. She is bringing to light something we rarely speak about as high achieving women in academia, the mental toll it takes to do what we are doing and how it can sometimes break us. Kudos to her for her honesty

Yeees exactly! We rarely openly share these challenges in academia. Ruth did a marvellous job bringing out both the exciting stuff about grad school but also the challenging ones...Glad you loved this episode🤗 And thanks a lot for taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment❤

@@dr.gladysngetich Please actually consider doing an episode that focuses on the struggles of being black, female and going through it (trauma, grief, mental health issues) whilst in academia and also carrying the hopes of many and our own fears of failure, it's far from easy... This channel is everything I have been hoping and wishing for. A channel focused on being black, African (born and bred), female and in academia. Essentially a unicorn lol... It's a painful and lonely journey... I truly appreciate what you have done for all of us camera shy unicorns of Africa

Oh, can I also have your email address? Yes I am brave like that lol.... I have a whole bunch of female academics from my side of the woods that I believe qualify as African unicorns and it would be amazing to hear their stories, so other unicorns know that they are not alone, there is a lot of us out there and we need to share our stories for other unicorns and help each other succeed, because so much is going against us. Love you and your channel,

@@user-yc4sz7xx4s Gosh! Looove your comment. I truly appreciate that you are taking the time to leave these thoughtful review/feedback❤❤🙏🏼 And yes! So much stress and loneliness as a black woman (or generally a minority) in school, at your job etc. Definitely not easy carrying and representing our tribe wherever we go and in whatever we do. You have so much insights, maybe I should bring you on one of the episodes😊 PS: I think you'll love the episode coming up next week, of a young Asst. Prof in the US, she was born and raised in Kenya and she touches on some of the challenges she has faced as a black woman in academia, stay tuned!🤗🤗
