Hello and good morning everyone, you may have noticed that in recent lectures I’ve frequently referred to the concept of “subjective destitution” without really explaining it in any detail. So today I thought it would be good to try and provide a very simple definition.
I’d also like to propose that we dedicate the next lecture series (starting Monday) to fleshing out this concept more and exploring its philosophical implications.
Thank you for watching, and if you’d like to purchase my latest ebook (an introduction to the death drives titled “the silence of the drives”, it’s now available on patreon.

This is my favorite idea by Zizek - arguably most radical and demanding in my opinion - as detailed in The Abyss of Freedom/Ages of the World. Thank you.

Recently I watched Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu and felt the character Lucy is a good example of subjective destitution. There’s a also a great scene at the very end of Dr. Van Helsing’s arrest that I saw as “the big Other does not exist”. Funnily Herzog has called psychoanalysis the greatest mistake of the 20th century. Looking forward to the upcoming videos. I hope you’ll touch on the medieval mystics.

I don’t see Heidegger as characterizing Being-towards-death as being lost, alone, existentially afraid. What do you mean by that?

And this is why Lacan was a theoretical genius but … a clinical disaster.

Slavoj Zizek saying subjective destitution is just him saying "i dont like people but in a smart way". All of the rest of this, im afraid doesnt really apply anywhere.
