Oh yes, the definition of "art" . That's something I myself have just come to look at in my own life and am in the middle of my comeback story. I can't say I was ever heavily discouraged from art, but what other people wanted became such a focus in my mind that I didn't even know what I myself wanted. I'm currently working on figuring that out, learning what makes me genuinely happy to create instead of the other factors I had to focus on in the past. Art is... whatever you enjoy making. If you express something, even if it's just the joy of making it, then it's art.

Yes can definitely relate to that feeling of being influenced by what other people want/project on to you. I agree, art is what you enjoy making- the feeling of the process is everything to me!

I started drawing and painting again in 2017, long after school and it's all thanks to youtubers like Jazza and The drawfee show. Specifically at drawfee, everyone has always been complimenting each others art, even the smallest details and i remembere watching it and thinking: "Is this even possible? To be surrounded by such support?" In school and in art school specifically there were always extremely harsh critics who believed that telling you that your art sucks in the harshest way possible will somehow make you a better artist, like it's a rite of passage or something. And maybe it's true for some, maybe people who survived this snake pit really became the most amazing artists in the world. But i just wanted to paint some cutesy stuff in the comfort of my bedroom. So yeah, the majority of my art knowledge and inspiration came from youtubers, almost all of them self- taught :)

I had a reallllyyy similar experience to you, except I went to university for Fine Arts and that's where I felt like me and my art did not belong. Art got ruined for me there, the things I wanted to make were similar to yours, I just loved painting nature and learning HOW to draw/paint, rather than what it all meant. I remember we literally had a lecture about why that type of art sucks, and they had some 'shitty' artists as examples of that- which happened to be artists I loved lol! I felt like a bad artist and like I must have not really had the talent or skill. I didn't make any traditional art for years and years afterwards.. But it was during covid that I went back to it and rediscovered my love for it, and just started doing it for the joy of it again rather than some pressure to be good. Your channel is one that has been helping me and inspiring me so much, because gouache has been a new medium that made me fall back in love with art again :) Thank you for sharing your story and for your lovely painting videos ❤

I quit Instagram several years ago because of that feeling as if I'm in a shop window trying to see what grabs people's attention. I understand it can be a great tool to connect with others and grow your audience, but I decided at the time I don't want an audience anymore. I got too involved in comparing my work with the work of others, and trying to impress. As I would draw I would already think, how will this look on Instagram, etc. It was unhealthy. When I draw I often hear a critical voice in my head, even without social media, and I want to let go of that. Your art is beautiful, it's fun to watch it come together layer by layer. And I find your narrative interesting to listen to. Thank you for sharing.

You've actually painted things that remind me of him before, but "postcard art" definitely brings him to mind - Eyvind Earle, one of my all-time art heroes. He did a lot of backgrounds for Disney in the '50s and '60s and he's actually the exact reason I discovered gouache - anyway, he literally painted christmas cards for decades. I have a giant heavy book of all his christmas card designs. Lots of times they're incredibly simple... but when you let his way of seeing things wash over you, you start to realize how much heart and soul and wisdom is in that big spread of cards. he painted this one red barn like hundreds of times, and big floofy drooping snow-covered trees all around it, and somehow Eyvind Earle's feeling about this red barn totally communicates "christmas..." anyway, it's all really profound and I just hope you get the chance to look at his "postcard art" and feel very, very proud of your own :)

When I started university I turned art into design and it became work instead of fun. I started doing photography instead of painting since it gave me a creative outlet without being to similar to work. I am literally being inspired to paint for the first time in the last ten years by your videos. To me the definition of what is art is what awakes an emotion in the viewer, and since your art awakes inspiration in me I definitely think there is art in your paintings, not just pretty old lady things. Although that is of course fine too :)

I find your story interesting. Mine was different I finished high school and didn’t start making art again for many years like you. But it was in university where it was a challenge to see myself where I was at and where these kids were at many years younger than I. It was a challenge to try to draw upon creativity that had laid dormant for so many years. But I’ve made it and find inspiration in you and all the wonderful artists here on you tube and other outlets.

I was an olevel art student, personally i loved art history (still do) but i found the art moledule resistricting... i stopped doing art for months after i finished that final painting... it was discouraging as my art was "not up to expectation" or "there was not enough emotion" my art is personal to me so i didnt feel comfortable sharing the full context to someone- but months later i discovered i still love humanities, n creating for MYSELF, i now do beaded jewllery and draw w markers n colourpencils :) after watching ur videos, i actually want to try grouche to incoperate into my junk journaling! Love ur workss ❤

I love this voiceover so much! Yes! Art is so subjective and such a journey for each of us. Even the most successful artists I know go through massive bouts of self-doubt or frustration with having to use social media to get wider recognition. I like your attitude to both those things and am constantly inspired by your art! I have just ordered some of your recommended art supplies after having tried the cheapest possible versions to see if I thought I'd like it. So thanks for sharing both your art and your story! If its letting you see the world in a more beautiful way in addition to making you happy then that's "real" art and creativity.....also funny ur work isn't "gallery worthy" when someone really taped a banana to a wall and sold it for 100k 😂

I have the same problem with my art course at college. I struggled with what I wanted to do with my life after secondary school until covid when I started doing art, and I found that it made me much happier than my academic studies and I connected to it better. I compared myself to other ppl in both my art and academic studies which made me just want to give up and leave college but it wasnt until my final project of the year where i found that i enjoyed more character design and animstion art than realism. Im 18 in a few months and I'm taking taking animation bc i had alot of battle with myself and my art and alot of ppl didnt want me to quit and im glad im taking animation bc character design, animation, comics make me happy and i hope to learn to love and not compare my art to others. I still have a long way to go when it comes to accepting my art and not comparing myself to others.

so glad you have found what makes you happy in art 💛 and that may evolve as you go along with your studies/course! I really believe that the best way to improve and grow as an artist is to create what you want to create and not what you feel you "should" be doing or what other people say you should be creating!
@ArtsyXylith
@ArtsyXylith Жыл бұрын
@sofiapavanmacias I felt very held back in my course because in the first few projects, because I had a certain topic to follow, mediums to use, what i should create, and even tho I was happy with the work I produced, I felt like I held alot back because I wasn't able to create art that I wanted, felt happy and confident in. But when it came to my final project, even tho I was given a certain topic, I was able to interpret it from my own point of view, where I could do what I wanted and I didn't feel held back by that so the work I produced, I was much happier and confident with what I created because I felt free from judgement and expectations, because I could use the mediums, inspirations that I wanted to use and felt that I experimented and explored more of my artistic ability and vision and saw an improvement in my work, which helped me gain more confidence in myself and y I decided to stay on at college. I hope to improve more and to be able to one day create my own comics and graphic novels, and maybe if I'm lucky, turn into a TV adaptation but if not just being able to make comics and books that make both me and others smile and possibly help others to believe in themselves more not just in art, but in everything and maybe even help them pick art up as a hobby or pursue it as a career.

Me to the artist that insulted you:- 😃🗡️ Seriously though. Why do artists and art snobs feel the need to tear down other artists who are happy with what they’re creating? Painting doesn’t need to have any deeper meaning or spiritual significance or something, it’s not literature. The most basic part of art is learning how to draw and paint, and that really is the enjoyable aspect of it. After I started painting regularly, I started seeing colors and textures and light and shadow in everyday life that I never noticed before. I hope you always enjoy making the art you make, because it’s beautiful ❤

A similar thing happened to me - I am a big anime/cartoon/comic nerd which is the primary reason I took art A Level. My teacher was constantly telling me it wasn't real art and that everything I did was terrible and rubbish. In the end he had to give me a good grade for my PI ( personal investigation ) because it's not graded on style of art but many other factors. You could tell he was really annoyed about it, which never made sense to me - Makes me feel like he'd walk to Disney animation studio and tell them what they do is crap xD!

@AnimalChannel-np1uh 1 second ago This sounds like me. I took art at school because I wanted to learn how to draw and paint. But everyone around me seem to already know how and were amazing artists. They didn't teach you how to draw, the fundamentals or anything, so I failed painting. I was really discouraged. The only thing I got a good mark for was sculpture! Finally, when I finished school I discovered KZfaq and decided once and for all to teach myself how to draw and my journey went on from there. I say if you enjoy your work who's to say it's good or bad!? I've done work that I hated but other people loved and I've done work that I loved and was so pleased with but nobody said anything about 😄 It depends on the person.
