Plumber here. I seen everything wrong before you said anything. You can't learn anything sometimes without being wrong sometimes. Also, even though it's called fireblock it doesn't actually block fire as it's pretty flameable. What it does is stop drafts of air from feeding the fire which is suppose to give you more time to get out of the house in case of a fire. I'm enjoying this whole series as I'm getting ready to start planning out my own cabin out in the Mountains. I like the Pier and Beam setup as it's economical but still strong.

Thank you very much for this constructive comment, much appreciated. Thanks for mentioning what fireblock really does, I did not know.

You were smart to have the place inspected (even if you had no choice). In some jurisdictions there is a choice and you can build without inspection and some KZfaqrs building homes as DIY rookies have done this, thinking they are as competent as licensed plumbers. In fact, I've seen the same mistake you've made. The benefit you have is that you caught a mistake and fixed it when it costs relatively little to fix. Moreover, you can say when the property is completed and you want to sell that it is very well built and passed all inspections. That alone can bring you tens of thousands of dollars more. Some properties that have plumbing or electrical problems to fix underneath concrete floors have to be discounted by over $100k because these things must be revealed during the sale and the buyer assumes that they need to be torn up and fixed.

Yes it was always my goal to do everything by the books, get the permit, inspections and certificate of occupancy so that this place can bring the value of my house up.

30 years in construction here, and my experience is most inspectors have saved me and my subcontractors many times. After doing several jobs with same inspector they get to know you and interact better. There are a few that fail to use common sense, but usually they are young and trying to do their job. If they don’t ask for anything outside the code, better to say Thankyou, make corrections and move on

Excellent instructional video. You are an engineer think about what the average Owner Builder has to learn. I have a rental cabin and your information on the entry door lock system is appreciated.

If I was a cabin renter, I would want an additional "separate mechanical deadbolt" on the door (much like Hotels) that use electric locks. If you're on the inside, there is no way to verify or test that it's really locked on the outside. Not very comforting. Pushing up on the door handle to lock a door is not common at all. At the very least, you'll need to post a instructional placard on the inside of door.

@@constructdestruct360 i agree, I plan on making an instruction video and have instruction on the door because you are right, some people could get absolutely confused as this system is not that common.

Congrats on passing the framing inspection. Here is the positive spin on the others. You have 99% of everything correct. The inspector finds the last 1% you missed or forgot about. You (we) pay a lot for the permits/fees so we should be thankful they do a thorough job to improve the quality of our construction. With that said, the inspection process is annoying. 😀

Make sure you use the Fernco rubber caps for the plumbing prssure test, don't use the Oatey plugs, they fail and can give you a false reading, also can injure you way worse if they blow off.

As a carpenter and new business owner I know how stressful it is to watch an inspector but I had the same experience with my last inspector the code was different in the state I was working and he called and texted a list of things I needed to check and fix and I sent pictures over text as well as called after fixing certain things and he passed them right there no need to come back out.

Don’t put air pressure in the dwv plastic drain piping. Just fill the system with water up to the roof. Use the gauge and air on the pex its ok, but the pvc will shatter explode, even at low air pressures
@TheDIYCabinGuy
@TheDIYCabinGuy 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for the tip, I’ll look into it. The only challenge is that the inspector said I need 10 ft of water head above the highest fixture. I currently still have not extended the vent stack through the roof just yet so I was hoping I could just do it with air.
@jeremyfreeman1860
@jeremyfreeman1860 11 ай бұрын
@@TheDIYCabinGuy ten feet of head is just slightly above 5 psi. Fill all the drain lines with water using a hose bibb threaded into the system and a hose female to hose female fitting. Use a gauge to pressurize the lines with water to 5-6 psi. Water is incompressible and will not explode the piping like air can:)

@@jeremyfreeman1860 thank you for the info, I’ll definitely look into it. I like the idea of water as it would be so much easier to locate leaks as well.

Does the inspector needs to see "capped" plumbing ends to make sure you did a leak test? Do you take a video of gauge to prove results? Or would he have accepted your word? Would just a verbal yes or no acknowledgement be good enough for inspector? But since you admitted you hadn't so automatic failure.
@TheDIYCabinGuy
@TheDIYCabinGuy 11 ай бұрын
I will have to cap everything and do it in front of him. But I’m going to move forward and finish all the trim and siding installation first and maybe also install all the insulation in the exterior walls and ceiling. Then I’ll get the inspector back to check all that and do a leak test in front of him. I’ll do one by myself first to see if I have leaks so I can repair them before doing a live test in front of him.

would you expect me as a layman to do your job as an engineer? You hire a professional for trades such as plumbing, heating and air conditioning, electrical, etc.. You can't expect to pass these if you've never done it before or had no such training. It's only logical that you would receive a fail. I would be astonished if you had passed. It all looks so simple when in fact it's really not! did you have a vent pipe through the roof for waste exhausts? Did you have a GROUND for all electrical? (a ground is usually a copper rod driven into the ground in a couple of places outside the dwelling)
