I liked the tonal shift that this series had. Raimi's series felt like a classic Hollywood style take on Spider-Man, with huge action set pieces, fun characters, and a story that only every took itself seriously when it needed to. Webb's series had a more grounded feeling to it. When you break it down, it felt like an indie movie, with a super-hero movie budget. Webb said that he had an obligation to make his own version of the character, and the world that he existed in, and I think he did a superb job at that. The story felt personal, and the action was great, but never too insane. It was a Peter Parker story through and through.

While he wasn't in the best Spidey-Films, Garfield will always be my favorite Spider-Man. He brings a level of realism and heart to it, that is just next level. And he continues to bring it in No Way Home... He had my eyes getting all kinds of juicy when he caught MJ. Admittedly, these two films have a big villain problem. Their conflict could have been a lot more tragic and compelling if they had spent most of the film working together trying to make a potential cure. But of course, Peter’s insistence on taking it slow after what happened with Lizard and needing to do Spider Man stuff causes Harry to go fuck it, I’ll do it myself. This is *exactly* how I feel about the film. I really really adore the character arc given to Peter in this film, but that arc is kinda complete by the halfway point. When Peter finally adopts the moniker of Spider-Man, and stares at that mask in his room, the film crests, and after that it’s all just dealing with the villain plot as a formality. It’s astonishing how much they shafted Conners, Ifans, the whole movie. And for what?

I like Peter’s arc too. It’s just kinda a shame that it’s all the result of all that convoluted stuff with his dad. All Richard Parker needed to do without giving too much away is tell Ben and May I need to protect my research from falling into the wrong hands. Oscorp is gonna fabricate evidence against me. Make sure Peter knows this someday. That way Peter won’t feel as abandoned.

Something I haven't said about a movie since Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events (if you enjoy that movie at all, be sure to track down the DVD version of it with all the deleted and alternate scenes). The Amazing Spider-Man duology is super underrated, it had it's problems for sure but even with its glaring flaws, I enjoyed it more than the MCU iteration... except No Way Home, but to be fair, almost everything good about that movie was because of the pre-MCU movies.

Another movie that is greatly improved by extra scenes is Batman Vs Superman: Ultimate Edition. In the theatrical cut, the plot was thin, the characters weren't fleshed out, and there was barely any motive for Batman and Superman to fight. When I first watched the theatrical cut, I was very disappointed and had lost all my faith in the story that they were trying to tell. However, upon watching the ultimate edition, my experience with the movie was much more positive. The extra 30 minutes were very crucial to the story and added a lot to the movie. While the theatrical cut was a 4/10, the ultimate edition was a solid 8/10. This just shows that studios have no idea about what needs to be added or cut from a movie to make it better. The simple solution would be to let the filmmakers decide what the final cut should look like.

Wasn't "we must be greater than what we suffer" in Gwen's graudation speech in TASM2? Every once in a while, I watch a thing like this and realize the kids are gonna be alright. Thanks for this essay, it really gives me hope for the future. This is why superheroes exist, and why we go back to them again and again. Their simple stories can contain so much of the human experience. The superhero, I feel, represents the warrior archetype in the broadest sense, taking on the metaphor of life as a battle to be fought. And I think this is a good metaphor for life, not despite its darker overtones, but because of them. It reminds us how close the dark side is, how easily we can become the shadow version of the warrior, just as Peter Parker does early in this film. Kurt Connors as the Lizard is a perfect representation of the monstrous shadow warrior, a perfect monument of muscle and power, except without humanity. The metaphor is so on the nose it's ridiculous, but that's what makes superhero stories so great. They're not trying to be subtle. One of the things I didn't care for about Amazing Spider-Man is how hard it leaned into dark shots, dark shadows, and dark characters. I think it's safe to guess that it was conceived in the shadow of Batman Begins, trying to match the mood, the complex origin story, etc. Everyone could see that it was a Spider-Man film trying to be something else, rather then embracing what makes Spider-Man great. I'm not surprised to learn that the scenes that made it a true Spider-Man movie were deleted. Without them, the film's villain doesn't reflect Spider-Man, and so beating him doesn't show us the core of Spider-Man's character. He's just an obstacle to be overcome. So what's the core of Spider-Man? I think you found it in this essay. He's a boy trying to become a man by taking on the burden of the world alone. Yet, like all of us, he's not quite strong enough to do it alone, and must rely on help of others. And that help comes because everyone can see how much he's done for them. So he represents the conflicted duality of self-reliance and mutual support that lies at the core of our social fabric. As you pointed out, the cranes scene was a pure, perfect Spider-Man moment that captures this transition from self-reliance to mutual support. It's like the scene in Spider-Man 2, when the people he saved on the subway car carry him to safety, or in Spider-Man 1, when the people he rescued from Green Goblin's no-win scenario distract Gobby, giving him a chance to save both them and MJ. To be honest, I've always been more of a Batman fan. But Batman films have very few true Batman moments. Perhaps because it's hard to put one's finger on what makes a Batman moment. It's not just standing over the city with your cape flapping. It's not saying "I'm Batman," or even "I'm vengeance. I am the night." That's just the pose. Whatever it is, it seems to me the films haven't quite found it yet. While Sam Raimi knocked his portrait of Spider-Man out of the park by finding that duality within him. And Mark Webb clearly understood it too. And it's a shame he didn't get to fully express it. It doesn't take a huge leap of logic to notice how many superhero films start off as real films, only degenerate into a listless parade of effects, stunts, contrived stakes, and empty triumphs. Wonder Woman is a perfect example, a film that lost track of its real story in the final act. And Marvel Studios seems to have abandoned their higher aims in order to churn out that formula. But I think it's better for us to look for what's good in films than what's bad, to see what's there rather than complain endlessly about what's not. We should draw a distinction between criticizing a film for not living up to its own intentions, and criticizing it for not living up to our expectations. After all, the last thing we really want is for every film to be exactly what we expect.

From someone growing up since the to toby era of spiderman, the amazing spiderman is the best of them all hes the best peter, the best spiderman, the best suit “TASM2” the best girlfriend and the best villains so far. To me I enjoyed the amazing spiderman so much and still rewatch it every couple of years and i think it didn’t get the chance to finish its story.

I always felt bad looking at the discussions of people hating this movie. It was the first time on my birthday that my dad did something I actually wanted to do. He took me to see this movie and I loved it. It was my favorite movie ever for years. Seeing this video helps me to realize why I love it so much. I see the mistakes like the video points out but I think I latched on to what it was trying to be. Great video!

This is my favourite Spider-Man movie. I saw this movie when I was 4 years old and I still cherish it. It is even better to me now and connects with me more. Peter feels exactly like me and what I go through. Grief, trying to understand myself and be happy with who I am. Not what I am told to be or what I want to be.

I'm starting to think I'm being watched like in The Truman Show. Last night, I finally (after 10 years) watched *The Amazing Spider-Man* and then today this video is recommended to me! 😮 It felt disjointed and I couldn't figure out why. And now that I've seen this brilliant analysis, I understand why I felt that way. Thank you so much for this!!! 🤗👍🏽

Hey i dont know if you will ever read my comment but i want to tell you that the secound half of this vedio reached my soul deep as an orphan my self i always wanted to make up for every emotion of helplessness and sufering that i ever end ured i want to be perfect i want to be great i want to be whole and able to feel capapel of writting my own story and being full again, perhaps thats why i love the prequels and G. O. T. And TASM because they have a very high and bright peak of light and hope but they always fell short regardless of how hard they tried and what ifs and fan fiction always was a drug to me to escape a little, and now that i graduated from high and i don't feel i desserve it heck i know i dont i see my self in two out liars on a spectrum between absolute ego and worthlessness ad and self petty i also have much thought of sucide and throwing my life because even in my highest atchevments i always find a way to peek a hole in my happines, so thank you from bottom of my heart because you gave the missing buzzle to appreciate the life that i have and the people who cared and will care for my truly... Best wiches my guy

Finally this movie gets some recognition. This is my second favorite liveaction spiderman movie (after no way home). The way it handles grief is.... well amazing. The scene when Peter pushes Flash against the scool lockers gives me chills. Also Uncle's Ben's last message is so heartbreaking. Not to mention Andrew Gardfield's performance is outstanding throughout the film. I also love the scene where Spiderman saves that kid inside the car hanging of the bridge. It's so simplistic and yet it represents Spiderman's heroism at it best. This movie is great, and i never understood why people hate it so much.

The reason why the original trilogy and TASM1 were memorable, was because of the producer LAURA ZISKIN It was because of her and her husband (the screenwriter Alvin Sargent) that the movies had depth She was the only one capable to tell AVI ARAD when to back off Unfortunately, she died in 2011, during the production of TASM1 Without her, there was no one to stop Arad from destroying the franchise Spiderman was nothing without her

I’m still conflicted with TASM. I love it and love Garfield as Spider-Man, but I still hold on to Tobey’s. I remember seeing it in 3D and wasn’t falling in love with the movie like most people. I liked it, but I grew up with Tobey and was hoping for a Spider-Man 4, so it was going to be hard to get over it. To sum it up, I want a TASM3.

I always liked this movie - and I still really do, its one of my favorite Spidey movies - but it really sucks that they took off so much from it. I can understand how some scenes hurt the pacing of the movie but I wish they really could have used those deleted scenes.
