for some people wondering where these things are mentioned in the show: in season 1: it's insinuated that the pair knew each other previously, even slept together once (or twice...). however, there is a level of animosity between them that suggests that things weren't left in a great place most likely before he went to Vietnam or New York. joyce comments that will wasn't "like us" in highschool suggesting the two may have been rebellious (this is confirmed in season 2). in season 2: they discuss being in highschool together, sharing their cigarettes between "fifth and sixth period" and skipping classes together. bob also says how joyce was the 'it' girl people wanted in high school - he also knew hopper despite being younger than both of them meaning they were both well known. in season 3: both of them become defensive over murray's "lovers quarrel" statement, hopper stating that THIS was not one. later on hopper also mentions how he missed THOSE (lovers quarrelling) old times. in season 4: we don't learn anything new about the two as a pair but we do learn more details of hopper's backstory, why he left Hawkins etc, which explains on some level the animosity we see in season 1. obviously, there are more moments but these are the one's based around when they were younger.
