After a sensational return from injury, John Stones is the latest guest on the Official Man City podcast.
The England international sits down with hosts Nedum Onuoha and Rob Pollard to discuss his glittering career to date.
Arriving at City in 2016 shortly after Pep Guardiola, Stones has since developed into arguably the best defender in the world.
During the episode, Onuoha, a former City defender himself, marvels at how Stones steps into midfield and dictates play alongside Rodrigo.
Stones' ability to come forward was a key component in last season's historic Treble success and again looks to be central to Guardiola's plans in the closing months of the 2023/24 campaign.
That's not to ignore his capabilities off the ball, with the 29-year-old more than comfortable going toe-to-toe with the most fearsome forwards in the game.
As one of the podcast's most requested guests, Stones is clearly a fans' favourite at the Etihad too.

His new hybrid role just shows what a player he is. It takes a very special defender to step into midfield and do what he does, find the spaces, no what's around you 360 and link the play in transition. Man is a joy to watch and is an incredibly nice guy too. No wonder his team mates love him so much! Like to think he will finish his career at City. Johnny, Johnny Stones!

I was one of his biggest critics in his early years here, he lacked concentration, was full of mistakes, and didn't look to be learning from them .... but now I think he's one of the most important players in the team, and much more reliable, so fair play to him for turning things around.

He's still too defensive and indecisive in opposition areas. He's not taking risks. Sometimes I feel he slows down the game

I really liked him when he was “terrible “ and only because I knew he had the potential. That’s what made me so much more critical of him. But over the last few years he’s really grown into his true potential. I believe it’s because he’s gotten his headspace sorted out along with better managing and coaching and maturity as well.

@@kontomylitis defenders usually are slower on the ball when in possession and with decisiveness especially when they are playing in a team that values possession. The point is that they usually are safe with the ball and make the defensive plays when it matters most. His transition into midfield hybrid role has been really good all things considered. City do usually play slower at times which is something I don’t quite understand why. But as soon as they’re scored on they speed the plays up much faster to what they should have been playing at to begin with. There are a few other players who slow the game much more than Stones does.

Genuinely the most underrated footballer in world football. The fact he plays centre half, CDM and CAM in the same game, absolutely mullering Madrid doing it too, is astonishing. Nobody else can do that.

Honestly Stones is number 3 on my favourites of the club, such a character and such character! The definition of what if it does work out!!! Thank God he was patient and trusted the process cause who would have thought. And props to Pep for standing up for him when the media tried to reduce him to a mere player cause he is exceptional!!! Why are some people saying John is underrated? He was highly rated but was truly underperforming years ago. But in the last few seasons he’s been outstanding. Everyone knows he’s a massive player for city.

Many things are said about Pep as a coach and manager, if he leaves next summer... just think about this the first player he turned into this hybrid type role was Aleksandar Kolarov if the last one is John Stones, honestly are there two more different defenders in football and more than any of the trophies he has won shows his raw ability as a coach and manager
