This session I headed out to the forgotten ponds in search of pike! We'd has lots of cooler weather leading up to this session, so I should it would be a good idea to get the light baitcasting gear out and throw some small swimbaits from hungry jack pike! I ended up catching loads of fish after finding the honey hole! I even caught a new species that I'd not found before in one of the forgotten ponds! Hoppe you enjoy!

I always think that with some of the small rivers/brooks I fish that have some relatively big pike. Must be lots of silvers, unless they’re just eating perch. Which there are plenty of.

Hey Chris, although the setups are great is there any chance you can tryout and show off some more budget friendly baitcasters and rods? its a nightmare trying to find a reputable brand of baitcaster setups that dont cost a bomb (i dont fancy spending an arm and a leg to try something out that i may not get along with)

So, I went fishing for pike this morning in a spot where I catch a fish 3 times out of 5, and when I blank I still have chases. This morning a man that lives there told me that about six weeks ago they found almost all fishes dead in the water, so I googled it and apparently the Enviroment Agency is investigating because there have been a lot of fish kills lately due to the heatwave in June and the tunderstorm that followed that caused a drop in oxygen level in the waters. So maybe that’s why it’s just jacks at the moment. The spot I was talking about is a small lake, and I usually fish the canals, that may have less oxygen than rivers.

Are these pike edible , we don’t have them in Australia
@janiharkki6860
@janiharkki6860 9 ай бұрын
From Finland here. Interesting to see the methods and venues for pike and perch in the UK. The fishing looks cool but the venues look tiny to me, these ponds are very small. It appears you do not eat the fish you catch at all? We normally do not eat pike apart from occasionally smoking the smaller 1-1.5kg fish, but perch upwards from 32-33cm we usually eat, especially if we catch more than a few. It does seem easier to locate the fish in the smaller waters, our "ponds" are usually very much larger and locating the fish is thus a lot more difficult :) Good fishing!
@leftmono1016
@leftmono1016 9 ай бұрын
I’ve always avoided larger lakes in the U.K. just because the fish are harder to find! Small rivers and small lakes for me 😀👍
@janiharkki6860
@janiharkki6860 9 ай бұрын
@@leftmono1016 I can believe that as they seem to be very easily found in these videos and the fishing seems great, especially for chub! We have chub too but the bigger ones are not so easily found and I usually catch chub of only 20-30cm in length. I do also prefer small ponds in swampy woods for fishing, my favorite places are actually really tiny ponds, no larger than 4-5 hectares. What do you consider a "larger lake" in the UK? Over here I would call anything between 50-100km2 a medium-sized lake and then perhaps anything over 100km2 would be a larger lake.
@leftmono1016
@leftmono1016 9 ай бұрын
@@janiharkki6860 - in the videos it’s a lot easier than most venues. Chris is a fantastically talented fisherman but there’s also plenty of fish where he goes. Which is good as we want to see him catch lots of fish 😀👍 I’m not really qualified to advise on lake size, although it sounds like you probably have a lot more larger lakes! Most large bodies of water here are reservoirs. I only really fish one lake, a Salmo Slider 10cm on a heavy rod almost gets to the middle! The little river I fished today, short underarm casts get to the far bank. That’s with a soft 5cm paddle tail and 1.5g. Sounds like you’ve got some really nice places to fish, although I assume it’s pretty tough in winter?
@janiharkki6860
@janiharkki6860 9 ай бұрын
@@leftmono1016 good to hear it is not like that everywhere, it seemed way too easy to catch bigger fish there 😂Just to clarify though, do you eat the fish at all? We often fish for eating so the usually targeted species are perch, walleye, whitefish, trout, char, salmon, pike etc. sometimes also fish like ide, asp and bream for smoking. People fish C&R too but taking fish for eating is very normal. Practically nobody here is targeting chub, barbell, tench etc. so there are probably quite massive amounts of them with nearly 0 fishing pressure. It is in fact not very difficult to find lakes and rivers where nobody has fished in months, possibly even years. And yeah, just had a look at the UK on google maps and even at 10km scale it is very difficult to spot any lakes whereas if you look at FInland at 10km range, well... Everything is relative, but for me a 2km long and 1km wide lake would be quite tiny, so what you describe would be a puddle? 😊 Then again, the colder climate means the fish grow slower so the record fish are not as large as in Central Europe or UK. Being that all the waters are frozen during winter flyfishing would be tougher, yeah 😅 Icefishing is actually quite popular, drilling a hole in the ice and fishing from there. Gives a chance to target areas and lakes you normally need a boat for which makes it interesting, too.
@leftmono1016
@leftmono1016 9 ай бұрын
@@janiharkki6860 - we generally never keep/eat any fish. In fact, it’s illegal on most waters. Unless you’re fishing a trout lake which has been stocked. So coarse fish, eg chub, barbel, roach, tench, perch, pike, have to be put back. I assume people who sea fish for cod, pollock etc keep some for eating. I only get chance to sea fish once a year, on holiday in Scotland, but always catch and release. Being able to ice fish in areas only usually accessible by boat sounds really interesting. The last time I walked on ice here was around 40 years ago as a kid. We don’t get thick enough ice where I am in central England.

Ref: The first Perch from this venue. The Perch will be competing for the same food as the Young Pike / Jack Pike and look to be losing the battle. I think there is too many small pike in this venue and if 60% of the smaller pike were removed from it. If someone doesn't keep on top of the management of this place then eventually all that will be left is loads of small stunted pike and nothing else. That in turn will lead to the Larger Pike eating all the other pike.
@FelixFiske
@FelixFiske 9 ай бұрын
I feel like that's too many assumptions not based on much. They are small shallow ponds probably less than 100x100 meters in size, can't expect sizes bigger than that to be fair and the perch have probably been there since forever. Doubt there will be small stunted pike and nothing else, besides all waters have natural cycles which affects the size of fish throughout time. Also I think the natural aspect of the ponds are what is alluring to ginger, having human interference and managment would take away from that in my opinion
