A million kilometers is probably closer to the truth. That's still a good run. I've read the options you can choose from are far more attractive in Australia too. Aside from the diesel, you can dual batt, generator, quick release sway bars, self inflating tires w/on board compressor (obviously).

Toyota Hilux is the biggest selling vehicle in New Zealand, they are iconic here. We love our diesels in New Zealand and Australia for their reliability, low end torque and affordability (gas prices here are up to 3 times higher than in the US). These are reliable work horses that keep running forever, are easy to work on and cheap to fix because parts are everywhere. Top Gear couldn't even kill one. There's a saying in Australia, if you want to go in to the Outback, take a Land Rover. If you want to make it home again, take a Toyota.

I live in Australia and I own a 2011 Hilux SR5 4WD with a 5-speed standard transmission & 3.0L Diesel engine. It has pretty descent acceleration and is pretty much an indestructable "ute" (utility vehicle- that's what we call our pickup trucks here). I've driven around half the country with it across rocks, floods, red deserts, sandy beaches and all types of terrains, moved houses with it, taken my kids to school with it and after 10 years it still drives like a dream. I always tell my wife I'd be buried in my Hilux and she thinks it's the best way to go. Pretty much sums up how good these vehicles are.

Yes, that's what I was thinking about. If that had a standard transmission it would be the perfect vehicle for taking through the outback anywhere. That's really what those vehicles were intended for in the first place. Or going through deep snow with a good set of deep tread tires on it. I would not want to take it through mountainous terrain with that auto transmission though. If I purchased one of those, acceleration would not be on my mind anyway. With that diesel engine and a standard tranny, I bet that thing could pull a heck of a load without any hesitation. It's nice to see a vehicle with an intake up high for a change. All the idiots could drive that through flooded streets without sucking water into the engine and bending a pushrod. LOL Both my father and grandfather would have loved the vehicle like that to take on their hunting excursions back in the day.

I am on my third here in the UK. Best truck to own and drive ever. Built like a barn door, 26 years old 220,000kms and starts first touch of the key. Tons of hop ups and mods around to make them even better. 25mpg isn't bad, and do the injector resistor mod to get better performance. Takes 20 mins, and the 'slow' part disappears. Mine cruises at 70-80mph all day no problem. Will tow a huge caravan wit ease.

SCOTTY, I have exactly the same one also from 1993. It has in fact a 2.4 ltr engine, the 2L-TE, not 2.8 ltr as you stated. Yes, grossly underpowered at around 90 bhp. The later versions came with a 3.0 ltr turbo diesel, the 1KZ-TE with 125 bhp and 145 bhp with aftercooler. Those go better. Despite the low power the fuel consumption is bad these being indirect injection engines. I struggle to get 10 km/ltr which is about 24 mpg (us gln). One word of caution: cyl heads of these are prone to cracking when there is coolant loss or overheating. Cooling system needs to be maintained very well . If so no problems and they will. Indeed last forever.

My truck is a diesel '84 Mazda b2200. Engine is a tank. I'm just now hitting the point where I need to replace and repair a lot of the original parts but the engine has never had to be rebuilt. You can't find every last little thing always, but the parts are still pretty easy to find and super affordable compared to other trucks (especially newer ones). Gets 35+ mpg and definitely trains you to be patient going up some hills.

Hi Scotty, i'm from Peru. I want to point out that in my country and most Latin America we imported those cars used from Japan since the 90's and of course brand new as well. What i can tell you is that almost every used-imported SUV were automatic as yours, but the ones that were brand new here were mostly manual until the late 90's. So i would reccomend for someone who wants to import a manual one to look in Japan but in our region. VERY important to check the condition first.

Yeah Scotty, maintaining a imported Toyota can be a hassle at times. I learned that the hard way after buying a 1990 Toyota Crown as my first car three years ago on my 18th birthday. I'd use it as my daily driver-still do at times. Though once a critical engine part breaks: I'd be without a vehicle for months because it is very, very hard to find parts for this car in circulation as most are discontinued and some distributors just won't sell the part due to international trade safety and sometimes political regulations. I still own the car. Love it. Never gonna get rid of it. RN I'm having alternator issues. Just bought a replacement recently and it's ironic because I just finished fixing the camshaft position sensor that went out in December of last year. I didn't find that sensor part until July of this year. I now have a 91' Chevy Caprice as my daily driver once I get it fixed up to rely on whenever my Crown breaks down.
