I think you are missing the meaning of "live". In other words this was recorded in one take, meaning that it was recorded live and he was actually performing it during the recording of the video. He wasn't lip-syncing and was actually playing the guitar during recording. If you look closely, you can see the microphone clipped to his collar and at the end just before the spoken dialog he u plugs his guitar to avoid feedback.

I was listening for the first time with you. My depression has been getting the better of me the last few weeks and I haven’t been able to see the light. I’m faking being strong for those who need me, but I feel like there’s nobody around for me when I’m in need. This song, beginning to end, hit me in the core of my soul. I’m going to wake up tomorrow, I’m going to keep waking up, I may not live every day, but every day I will exist. If I cannot live, then I will love. I have tears leaking from my eyes. You're right, this isn't just a song, it's art. I've never heard anything that captured the reality of mental illness so vividly. I developed Bipolar 1 when I was 11 years old. I've heard those same messages in my head, originally as an actual voice, since treatment more like a quiet recording played on a constant loop. I love that it's hope that holds back the darkness, because I've fought that battle for 50 years and I know that the wheel always turns: as terrible as the dark times are, as much as it seems they'll never end, they always do. Keep fighting, friends, for your joyful times. If they aren't there at the moment, they will be soon.

The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will always be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a powerful piece of performance art that gives "broken" people HOPE. It's a beautifully raw musical masterpiece. Ren is special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking.

Great reaction. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work.

exactly, it is and after experiencing Ren for a while now its mindblowing to read all this within a minute and get an overview of HOW MUCH epic stuff he already put out there. And theres even more we dont know of, he never released or only just once droped a little bit in a life stream. Some of this can be found on a channel here called something with "shorts" in it if I dont get it wrong. But I dont remember. Just amazing. Having no words to describe this human being and his qualities. But we are lucky, hes a genius in this and he does it in quiet some tracks already. 😁

You are going to go down a rabbit hole of emotion and masterful story telling if you continue to check out Ren! The man is a story telling God! Check out the trilogy ( Jennys tale then screeches tale then violets tale) I promise you won't regret it, you'll feel the emotion and the journey all 3 of them have been on like you're reading a 5 minute book! Absolutely no one else like Ren out there dude

If his written introduction is not fiction, this young man has incredible insight into his mental health issues. Rarely do people with psychosis understand what is real and what is part of their hallucinations. He is also able to beautifully describe his inner life. So glad he wrote this song. Hopefully this song will encourage people to rethink their beliefs and prejudices toward mentally divergent people. Can’t wait to see what else he will share. An authentic person for sure.

Been watching hi ren reactions, been waiting for this one. I've been through and go through so much Ren does, he got his autoimmune secondary to lyme disease, but I've had autoimmune disease (lupus) symptoms for over 20 years now at least, and don't have an inner voice that sounds like a voice, but I do struggle with anxiety, depression and more that tells me everyday that I am failing and always will. This song echoes with my life and I listen to it everyday for motivation to keep pushing through and learn to dance that dance. Because he's right. I have tried my entire life to find doctors, medications, life style changes, diets, anything to defeat the symptoms, both physical and mental, but things are easier when you accept the pendulum. Do what you can to help yourself. Take care of yourself. Push forward to achieve things, but don't try to fight the negative thoughts. Accept them, hear them, and move on. Some times there is value in the negative thoughts, sometimes there isn't. But it's easier to accept them but keep moving on then it is to try to squash them altogether. Because we cannot. They are a part of us. As ren says, it is a part of being human. It is a universal experience since the dawn of man. Some have worse struggles with it than others, some give into the dark id of their minds, but we all can be the students rather than the victims if we learn to live with that "voice" rather that to fight it to the end.

Totally mesmerized how Ren has quite simply stopped everyone in their tracks, to take a pause and come together in our collective suffering. Maybe with more urgent messages like these, we could begin to heal the worlds trauma.

This is pure poetry. To put the experience out there, to be vulnerable, can give hope to those of us who may not want others to know what we are going through. This blew my mind, not knowing how to deal with depression. This is necessary material.
