Wow. I really can't sing the praises of this game more. I am so glad this video series led me to FINALLY playing one of the best FF games of all time. Hard to say it's #1 for me, but it's damn, damn close.

Someone commented on my FB that I forgot my guy YOSHITAKA AMANO's incredible artwork! I just had too much to talk about, but that is a pretty major oversight. The art style of VI is integral to the look. So consider this my mea culpa!

@@wizcatcheslightning I love 9 as well. I think 7 was just THE game for many (myself included), so it has taken on this larger-than-life feel. I also think X is slept on. That probably rounds out my personal top 3 (7, 6/10 duking it out). 9 was a dope return to form! Definitely top 5.

For the algorithm! And man, if Shadow’s theme is your favorite because you like the western vibe you would LOVE the music from the first few Wild Arms like I was telling you lol, just insanely good western music. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Chrono Trigger as well! As much as I love and highly respect FFVI, I’ve always been more of a CT guy myself. Can definitely see how someone could prefer one or the other though

My friend in highschool lent me FF3 in 1995. I was blown away. It's my favorite FF title. There's one thing about this game that some people don't talk about. When it came out by the end your characters were small gods. Rpg tiles like lunar upon release talked about in their game your characters are more grounded not becoming small gods by the end of the game. So other RPGs where trying to do the opposite with the character power levels. But it was necessary to be super powerful to kill kefka.

Just have an artist put something together with all my favorite characters and do a time lapse of the work and a whole video surrounding why I chose the characters and such. 10k could be a LONG way away or closer than I know, depending on a lot lol. One of the things that really blew my mind when it came to this game was when I saw someone comment that it's presented to the player like an opera. We clearly have a narrator going over the magi war at the beginning, each and every character has an introduction going over them a bit when we first meet them, and the game ends on a curtain call for everyone as well. Obviously because it's a SNES game a lot of events have to be presented in an "over the top" kind of way for the player to understand what's really going on, such as having characters literally say what they're thinking because the graphics limit their expression, but I think framing it through the guise of an opera or a play really adds to the experience and is a clever way of presenting it at the time.

When I first played FF6 there were two major key points for me. First the Celes cliff scene, when it happened I stopped playing for a month, because I needed to put myself back together. Then when I got to Kefka in the tower, it was almost 4 am and I was glued to the screen, paused the game every time (going to magic menu) and just listened to the songs of Dancing Mad, especially the last part. My mom woke up and wondered why I am still up and I was in awe.

I also played FFVI after already playing all of the 3D games in the series, so I get how it is to step back in time in that sense. VI was really FF’s first truly amazing installment imo and it still holds up as one of the best, one of the boldest stories I’ve ever seen in a JRPG even today, hard to believe this came out almost 30 years ago now.

Nice vid, peak game. Some quick points: @ 12:40: Cyan's dream is not a throwaway "juvenile" scenario. It's a dream sequence where the player enters his soul. It's about him excercising his demons for failing to protect Doma, and, ultimately, it's about helping him finally letting go of the torment that eats at him for what happened to his wife and son, and his inability to stop it. The dream sequence is his story arc resolution. Also, my guess is the difficulty spike when getting to the floating continent is intentional. You're supposed to feel the impending doom, where you think it's the final dungeon to beat the game. Much later in the game, battle psychology is implimented well when fighting Chadarnook and Goddess, where the battle mechanics of those two fights feel like you were enticed by beauty, only to have it feel like a trap. They thought of so much stuff. I replayed it for the first time in about 10 years and was amazed at all the messaging and mature concepts they packed into a SNES game.
@thegamersician
@thegamersician Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I understood what Cyan's dream was about, but I did still think it was more goofy than anything else. It worked on a certain level, but fell flat as being effective in the way many other parts were for me. It really was a game ahead of its time in about every way, but I think age hasn't been kind to a few parts for new players like myself. Overall though, god tier!

I love FF6. It was so amazing when it came out. You still had to grind to gain levels. I once spent months grinding in fights in the caves in Narshe, yes the first time through them, I broke the game by getting Terra up to level 99 fighting rats and… I think slimes… I can’t remember what all was in there. But I basically started at level 99. That was weird. I also would spend hours on the Veldt setting up Gau with his attacks, don’t remember why but he was my favorite at the time. Him and Realm both. I just dusted off my copy of Final Fantasy "III" I got back in 2010. I grew up with a PS1 as my first system and didn't get to play FF6 until I was in my late teens(I was born exactly one year before the Japanese release lol). I got to the Ultros boss fight I believe, and just didn't have enough time to keep playing long winded RPGs like I used to at that point in my life since so many things were happening then. Now at the ripe age of 30, I am truly giving it another shot since I inherited a pretty fancy mid 2000s tv with S-video and component capabilities. I am an hour in and it is gripping me way more than it did when I first tried it(It looks so pretty too on this tv ;w;). The main things I am looking forward to is suplexing the ghost train and hearing dancing mad on og hardware for the first time.

An interesting thing about the party leveling is that (in the GBA version, at least) your reserve party members seem to stay within 3-5 levels of your main party so if you need to switch it up, you're not in for a horrendous grind, I also played Chrono Trigger in a similar time span, and it holds up just as well, except the additional area they added in the DS version is crap.

I am going to share a story. In May 1999 my best friend died. He died from huffing paint in his garage. Surrounded by kids when he huffed, they ran out of his house when he started to choke on the fumes he inhaled. He died alone. Later that summer a friend moved away without telling me. Then another changed schools. And by the fall another moved to another city. By the end of the year I had lost my entire friend circle. I was 13 and later 14, at the time, and it was one of the worst years of my life. It didn't help that there was talk of the world ending soon. Because of my experiences I started to withdraw from socialization. Video games and anime were my friends now. The church didn't care, my school didn't care, my family kind of cared but didn't know the full extent. I say all of this because that fall Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy Anthology were released for the PlayStation. They were all I was looking forward to that year. I read every single preview of FFVIII and it's by far, to this day, my most anticipated game of all time because it was released in a time when I desperately needed to get away from the real world. I deeply recognized myself in Squall. I couldn't understand how a video game could get me so much. Then Anthology came out and it was bundled with V and VI. I loved V but I really took a liking to VI. I played it and VIII side by side. I was struck by how despite the fact VIII was more advanced, VI could make me feel more despite it being "obsolete" and by that point in time five years old. I was shocked how colorful and expressive these 2D sprites were in comparison to modern graphics. More than that, I was inspired by Cyan. The year I lost just about everything I was introduced to a character that did lose everything - his wife, his child, his king, his kingdom, even his knighthood. I couldn't understand how he could keep going and how he could keep fighting. He really inspired to keep going despite loss. The older I got the more I connected with the story and characters. When I was depressed I understood what Celes was going through and her attempt to live in the face of her adversity has inspired me to keep going no matter how tough life got. Ever since I was introduced to it Final Fantasy VI has helped remind me that life is worth living and to keep fighting despite all of the battles we face. Not bad for a video game, huh? The older I get the more I manage to appreciate about it. I think it's the greatest Final Fantasy because it's the most balanced. I categorize Final Fantasy games into story FF's and gameplay FF's. FFV is clearly a gameplay oriented FF; the story is secondary to the gameplay. FFVII is clearly a story oriented FF; the gameplay is secondary to the story. Only FFVI manages to have such good gameplay (open-ended WoR, amazing dungeon design, good battles) combined with such a hard hitting story. It's such an excellent package even in 2023. Then there's the music. A lot of people talk about Dancing Mad but I considered Balance Is Restored to be Uematsu's magnum opus. The blending of each characters theme is genius. A 22 minute long song on the super Nintendo. Gaming music has never been able to top it. The highs of the Shadow Theme remix, the blending of Locke and Celes' theme to solidify their relationship and their ability to finally trust each other to fall in love. I get goosebumps just talking about it. Even more importantly, it solidifies the game as a masterpiece. The ending is so good that it turns a great game into one of the greatest games. Terra undoing her hair, with it flowing in the wind able to be free to be whatever she wants, without any notions constricting her as the Prologue plays gives me goosegumps. What a game! The legacy of this game is unreal. 2D RPGs have been cribbing its look since 1994. It - not FFVII - started the modern era of FF. If you Google Final Fantasy VI and suicide you'll see lots of stories of how FFVI saved people or helped them deal with depression. Lovely video Paul and I'm so glad you got to finally experience it.
@thegamersician
@thegamersician Жыл бұрын
Yo- seriously, thank you so much for sharing your experience. It's funny, we met on Squarepedia like what- 22 years ago? I don't remember if I knew any of this about you, but it makes sense that you were (and are) so passionate about these games. A lot of what you point out about FFVI, struck me as I sat and watched the credit crawl. Cyan's story was heartbreaking. Watching Celes fight against the overwhelming desire to end her own life.... the way the world had to fight to bounce back. It feels so much more prescient in the modern day. We're still fighting these same fights, and it's still so inspirational of a tale. FFVII may have been my first FF game ever, and it may have taken me 30 years to try FFVI... but man, I'm glad I did! It really is an incredibly well balanced adventure, both with strong gameplay AND strong storytelling and characterization. It's hard to pass over why this is one of the greatest ever to do it.

Well actually, FF I, III, and V were all gameplay based while II, IV, and VI were all story-driven. @@garrettdanielsii2305 What a minute, you're telling me that a game with an imbalance and cheap gaming mechanics like the Espers system of VI is more balanced despite the game having a great "narrative story" compared to the likes of V that have solid storytelling that isn't groundbreaking as IV and VI, but has amazing gameplay due to the well-rounded job system that allows you to customize your 4 party members with 22 job classes with instead of having 14 party members in VI.
