Hi, Jess. If I tried to express all my thoughts from the beginning, I think I’d be watching and writing this forever, but at this point, as you look through your childhood art, I’ve just grabbed some paper (the back of a supermarket receipt!) to scribble my thoughts as I watch, because it seems to me, as to you, that this is the catalyst, the key moment in the whole process. The importance of catering for the inner child. YES!!!!! The rain sequence: my response was, “Go out and dance in it” and you did! 21:26 -ish this is where it has suddenly become fully alive for me. Suddenly, you are there, on the canvas, real, alive. Before you added the oils, it was lacking that ‘You-ness’, and the tulips, depth and life. Now it’s here. The oils and you, yourself, have made it alive, “Reach out and touchable” is the best way I can put it right now. At the end: It’s as though behind you, it’s raining, running down the glass, and (odd, because the rain is outside, but it feels perfectly right) round your feet, there are raindrops. These clouds at the end: I think that they sort-of sum up what I’m trying to say. Thank you Jess, for allowing me to be ‘in’ this painting experience with you.

It's not too late!! Find an art group and let them help you along this journey. I've painted all my life and have now just started winning prizes fir my work and even selling it! I'm 75!!!! GO FOR IT!!! There are lessons online for free if you need that. GO FOR IT…GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of the things where your cinematography really shines. It's so easy to just do minimal editing, but your music/sound design, with the footage, and your commentary/quotes had me crying here. Especially with your call to your mom. I wrote it in another comment to someone else, but its such a pure unbridled love moment, that she would even think to say she'd grow a garden for you, writing this I'm still crying thinking about it. Not everyone gets to experience a moment like that, it goes beyond standard support, or even say a family member buying supplies for you. The others can be empty gestures, or full of care, but its impossible to fake such a deep and caring thought as wanting to continue keeping you inspired in your craft/hobby/passion that they'd think to even say they'd take the matter into their own hands. 😭

I just got to that part. I was in tears 😭 🤔 I think a good way to say it is (at least just her mom part) that it's such an unbridled and pure love that everyone hopes for but not everyone is lucky enough to get. That you would be, not only so wholly supported by being cheered on, but that that person would support you so much that they would think of or even do something that would continue that inspiration or course that your on. That they pay such close attention that they know what you would need or want to continue on your path toward success.

hi jess, alvis here🤍 you’re such a huge comfort and inspiration for me. you teach us how art could make yourself your best self, how you can find yourself. like in this self portrait you discover who you are. my mother past away a month ago, and it’s has been a undeniable weird time. i can’t believe the words “my mother died when i was sixteen” is for real. many people have been supporting me and i can’t be more grateful…🤍🤍🤍 i hate feeling down, i always want to be happy and do well. i will always believe that it will be room for happiness in my everyday life, in everyone’s life. thank you jess for helping me boost my excitement in my life. even though i feel like dancing, drawing, friends and family brings me up - you also do that. your positive mindset is unlike any youtuber i’ve seen. let your happiness spread its wings and learn me/us how to fly🦋🤍

The end result was even more stunningly incredible than I expected! The use of the oil paint to add color really brought it together and made it pop, giving it body and dimension and soul while still preserving that wonderful warmth of the sepia underpainting. I really enjoyed the journey! Well done

This is the biggest project you've ever done and I think you grew as a person too. You couldn't have drawn a better self-Portrait ever. I can see how much work and love is in this piece. Everytime by chance I come across art, I'm such emotional buster and I could say a bucket full of tears because when I also read what people say here I could understand better. Totally when you got excited and said you feel so much breakthrough, that had me inspired and looking back with your processed videos of painting I just want to sometimes leave everything and just want to learn and watch your skills, somehow you are a person we could look up to when it comes to teaching, comforter when those hard day's comes or when experienced art block, you have our back watching and I can never see myself stop watching, you work so hard, it's not only art but your editing in your videography has us enjoying a rollercoaster! I just saw this video and I was so moved by your journey towards the completion of this fine, fine piece of work. I am in the waning years of my life. It's a struggle for good health, my eyes get tired easily and the energy comes and goes with no regularity. However, I am grateful for my art training and my fervour for doing art, any art is a blessing and it has offered me a refuge, a place of healing, self discovery and hope. The other thing I find about art is the comonality of the artistic language that transcend generations. So, as I celebrate your youth watching your video I shared and emphasized all those moments that led to your beautiful self portrait. Thanks Jess. There is a lot of great quotes about rain. My favourite one is, " Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet". I just love your freckles by the way. I was so glad you painted them in your portrait. Now, I need to squirrel up my courage and do a self portrait of this old man who looks back at me in the bathroom mirror. Cheers and keep the videos coming!

Awesome!!! The acrylic under painting was beautiful, but the oil did, as you found, raise it to a higher level. Bravo! I taught myself how to oil paint 50 years ago, when I was just 12, and in all that time, through every visual medium you can imagine, nothing has been as satisfying and magical as oil paint. I was with you for every stroke!

I wanted to say this painting is breathtaking, but actually I feel it allowed me to breath for a moment. I see a person breathing, enjoying the moment and almost floating while still sitting firmly on the ground. I love this contrasting effect of your brushstrokes suggesting movement and aliveness while providing an overall feeling of the serinity and peace. This is what I felt personnally when I saw the final reveal. Thank you for sharing your journey! And congratulations in finishing your painting ☺

your story telling has gone on to another level. The child painting moment pulled my heart strings in every direction. If I were a rich man, I'd beg that you paint a portrait of someone I love. Not mine because it's scary how well you captured your essence to a point of nakedness. But then again, you are genuine in what you portray, in itself a very brave thing to do. A benefit to us all. As an artist, adding color is always the scariest part. You did an amazing job with it though and it really adds to the piece. I haven't painted in a while, but watching this video definitely inspires me to want to paint again soon.

Wow. So beautiful. I love that you trusted yourself to move into the oils. It is the same idea you were capturing in acrylic, it just got more magical in oil. You can see the love and energy from the gift of the tulips (and your family) radiating around you.
