One thing that is important to determine in any business is the tipping point at which the time, labor, and materials needed to complete a job is no longer worth the payoff. This client made several decisions that pushed the scale out of my favor. This is why I fired them, and how I told them.
Firing a client (also known as dropping a client) happens for any number of reasons in the lawn care industry. I have dropped a client because they wanted their grass cut at 2" when a huge portion of their yard had roots jutting up above 2". Obviously I couldn't meet that request.
Another client was fired when they put in a locked gate but I couldn't get a key and would have to schedule my visits around them being home. Not a viable option, especially during the Florida summers when rain can wreck a schedule every day.
Let me know your thoughts, but please be sure to watch the whole video before commenting.

I worked at a lawn care and landscaping company for 6 years, 4 of them as a crew lead. The struggle is real, people. You're not paying the lawn care company to pick up stuff around your yard, you're paying for a mowing. That would be like expecting the plumber to wash your bathroom entirely because they replaced a washer or gasket.

We are not there to move personal goods from the yard to do the job. Liability of damaging those items are a real concern. I have had similar situations over the years. All customers are informed that we do not move items from the yard. If we can't get our mowers in or maneuver around them, we will call the job finished. Good. People know your coming and when you do it once they will continue to expect it at no charge. It's time consuming and the price agreed upon now must change! Same thing with carpet cleaners. It says on website we do not move furniture! Still they ask to move sofas, dinning tables, end tables, folding beds, toys throughout the house. The one I love the most.....can you just roll up the rugs and put them in the garage. Hell no. I'm on a schedule, call us back and we will try to fit you in about a week from now. I dont care you took the day off to have your carpets cleaned, then you had enough time to at least vacuum, move your rugs you dont want cleaned and put your dogs outside so we can service your house! See you next week or we won't. As I am getting older, being nice is for the birds. If they don't respect low prices and quality service then I don't have time for B.S. n games. I use to bend over backwards with a smile.......use to! And for you women showing up at the door half dressed for a discount, my wife says no so please stop trying!🤣😅🤣😅

I use to know an insurance agent who had a very difficult client. He had a lot of business with her, but was rude and demanding to her staff. Every year she had a meeting with her staff about him and took a vote. One year after the meeting she called the client to say she would no longer represent him. When he asked why she told him "this year you lost the vote. The commissions we earn from your business aren't worth the grief." Every businessperson has the right to decide with whom to do business and what criteria to use when making that decision.

I 100% agree with how you handled the situation. I own and operate my own small engine repair business and sometimes you have to lose money to keep people happy. As you said in the video I would much rather take a hit on my side to make the customer happy versus a negative review. One of the first jobs I had when I was younger was in a call center and as I worked my way up through the ranks I had to take training classes and one of them was on customer service. It was pounded into our brains that a customer who receives a positive experience will generally speak well of your company and hopefully recommend it whereas a customer that receives a negative experience will generally go out of their way to let people know of their negative experience. Great videos keep up the good work and there's a reason you aren't struggling to pay the light bill. You clearly know how to run your business.

You seem like a respectable guy. You don’t (at least seem) to get pissed off over little things that you can just let slide. Any other landscape and lawn care companies would be cursing up and down and have to cry about it all day. You just simply address the issue and move on. 😎 I like your style brotha!

Totally agree. As a gardener in the uk I'm fed up moving toys and other crap. Broke one mower in a child's toy as I didn't see whilst mowing. Ended costing me money so did not bother going again. All my clients have a day assignment when I turn up. If weather is bad they get an email with next date. Edit Also dog shit is a big problem especially when trimming.

Extremely cordial and friendly way to drop a client. I mean if your going to have someone doing work for you, you should always clear any and all obstacles in their way before they get there. I work as as a broadband tech and I can say without a doubt, nothing makes me madder than getting to a job site, and finding out I have to move a pile of crap from the side of the house to get where I need to be. (or pulling 20 years of junk out of a crawl space entrance to get under the home)

@@lovelylady1966 he does put it in the contract. As do I. I also say if there's obstacles in the way I will mow around it. If I can't mow around it I skip it. You still pay. More than one violation and I drop you as a customer

He got really childish by calling it junk, I think. Obviously they don't think it is if they just put it there in the last few weeks. He almost sounded like he was taking it personally too. I totally agree to drop them as clients. But you shouldn't make fun of them on KZfaq. Also saying good news and bad news? No, it's just news for them. And people should get paid for their services. I think he's trying to excuse some less than stellar behavior after the fact. Recap: drop them as clients. Still get paid. Don't talk crap about them.

I like the mindset. If 1 cut isnt make or break to me I'm in the wrong business. Reputation means a lot and my friendlyness and easy going ways is why I have most of my clients now. Lawn care taught me a lot of lessons I needed in my 20s. Quality work, patience, planning a route, adapting when weather or obstacles. But if it ever becomes too hard to make a buck Ill go get good at something else

Had a very similar lawn a few years ago. Unfortunately we mowed it the whole year before parting ways. Seemed like every other week something new was added to the yard. It only took five passes with a push mower until it became an obstacle course.

Its more work then its worth with having to move all there junk every time. in your business. time is money. and you have such a schedule on your customers. its just not worth it. nice of you to offer the last one for free. it does take away any right from the customer to trash you and why you had to stop service to them

I'm a little surprised someone with a lawn that small wouldn't just do it themselves. Then again, if they did, they wouldn't keep all that crap for long. It's real easy to leave a mess when its someone else's problem.

Dude, it boils down to "help me help you" and business is business! Sometimes, in business, you have to make an executive decision to either continue to be the employee or stop doing the lawn due to liability for you and your business which is a direct result for your family. Don't feel like you're doing anything wrong. I totally agree with the final visit being Free. I would do that just to get rid of the headache!

I owned a Landscape company for 6 years years, built from the ground up. Over 150 clients a week. The best way to handle small yards like that are to just weed whip them, don't bother moving the clients items. They usually never complain, and if they do let them know the issues your having with their property so it doesn't happen again. Also i charged extra for yards littered with dog poop.

Lawn mowing was part of one of our rentals - the guy just rocked up unannounced and went out the back and mowed. Didn’t even knock on the door to say he was here or what he was doing. Apart from a swingset nothing on the ground... except that one time toys were everywhere and I still feel bad!! Had I known he was coming I’d have moved everything for him instead of him having to do it..
