Only impactful thing be missed was the ability to build paths, but it’s a lot of micromanagement IMO (for pretty good gains, but it gets tiring fast).

well they are colonists so they had to travel to his territory and he paid for and built housing for them and they are presumably eating some of the fruit since it's going into a wok which is used for cooking. so they are being paid in travel, housing, and food.
