I found a strange and rugged landscape while searching Google Earth. This region has harbored ancient civilizations and mysteries of the past. Due to medical malpractice I am confined to a bed in a longterm care facility unable to walk or get out of it. Due to medical negligence my poor wife's brain was damaged and she lost most of her memory. She is committed in another long term care facility. Both of us loved to explore. She loved to camp. I wish she could watch these. For those of us in such circumstances videos like these restore our adventures, enliven our lives, and fill us with wonder. Thank you!

The special strength of this video is that the idea of the hike is not to go from place A to place B, but the trip is based solely on how the landscape itself speaks to you. It is important that you try to tell the viewers what the landscape brings to your mind. So far, I haven't found anything similar. Thank you!

If this landscape was used in a movie everyone would think it looks an obviously phony set made from paper mache and spray foam. I can't believe this exists on this planet, let alone in this country. Just about the coolest thing I have ever seen. Thank you for bringing it to us.

I had that experience taking a back road somewhere southern Idaho into Nevada?? (Long story) I think it was the hoodoo-land they used in the movie Galaxy Quest. Saw some really awful bubble-wrap things on Dr. Who lately. (TUBI has classic Who!) OK, back to Desert Drifter....

I had the same feeling when I visited Garden of the Gods, near Pike's Peak in Colorado Springs, CO. I always wanted to take my kids back there and do a short little Star Wars movie. It was so surreal.

I concur, and I had to search for "petrified wood": Petrification (petros means stone) occurs when the organic matter is completely replaced by minerals and the fossil is turned to stone. Generally ranges from hundreds of thousands of years to millions of years.

@@syjwgYes but has to be burried whole and quickly otherwise the tree would just rot away? Those trees were blasted and burried in volcanic ash long before they could rot

This has to be your best Cinemascope video I have seen. The picture quality and visuals are stunning. Those balancing rocks are wild and if we didn't know different, you would think this was CGI or AI images, but seeing them as actually real landscape is mind blowing. DD Ive been following you for a good long while now. I live in Flagstaff AZ, and Im somewhat familiar with what you are exploring, but NOBODY does it a justice as you do. Man, this is one of your best. Although I have to confess that I seem to say that about every one of your episodes! But this one was very compelling and exciting for me. Very different from your past DD experiences that I have seen. I particularly like 14:40 thru 14:45 and 18:20 thru 19:00. I am in awe, and at a loss for words. Id be willing to bet, that you felt the same when you came upon these amazing Earth Sites. And then you add another unique and compelling wonderous experience - to sleep among this incredible environment! That part of your episodes is really COOL! It must feel like something magic, and VERY special. Ive already said too much, so Ill close. But DD.... dont stop what you are doing. You are giving us a brilliant, educated look into an area of our United States Country that most of us could never have even imagined exists. You sir, are expanding our minds to another level! Yep u lucky to live in the middle o amazing sw , I can remember falling off a big land bridge and the hight was not safe, actually my oldest brother pushed me off a forty ft Arch hahaha, thought I was gonna b hurt bad or dead at that moment but seems I fell just right the Sand was pilled up in spot I hit back first, completely sunken under sand um thinking I don't even have a scratch, and really bo sand in my eyes or ears that was terrible Luke you think it would b , really should b greatful the LORD maybe arranged that to not kill me ,that was well over 50 yrs ago and I'm only 57 ,that brother did me alotta wrong through the years but he's not getting getting up anymore he got his just dessert I guess,but it's a suspicious suicide that looks like a murderer or whatever reason he was said to b found dead, but I checked that area a few times over few days period, but when his son in law comes to say he gonna look around he's telling me he sees the body with face blown off with shotgun, idk ,u would've seen that and or any evidence while looking before and after, think the planted the body earlier and convenient they found him where I know he wasn't before! Rip billy really started doing better then getting a shotgun death don't seem like something he can do , but he was responsible for a native guys death by 22 caliber rifle in the 90s , never really know what really happened, but he was only in prison for a couple yrs, yep life is cheap,yep the eastern US is Great wilderness areas also but it's always getting more dangerous

It looks like this was a Great Basin where sediment settled after a great flood, if you notice a lot of Petrified logs/wood were embedded in the sediment.

Did you find any pumice or ash in the different layers of soil?. If your near the Petrified forest than it would explain a lot of what your finding, this region was a giant inland sea and marshes at one time.

I don't think it was a flood I don't see any small cable rock Round Rock or any other rocks in the ash piles that are there you can tell the distinction between the ash and the small layers of sandstone

@@haroldsprayberry9937 Agreed, but then how do you explain the petrified wood/logs being imbedded and protruding our of the side of the hills? I’ve been to the Petrified Forest numerous times and you can clearly see that the are was once a large swampy region. You also can see rock formations and boulders/stone layered within the hills and in the washout areas. Would love to go to this area and and study the different sedimentary layers.

All I can think of is this is definitely the aftermath of a LOT of water flooding the area and eventually dissipating. It totally looks like dried mud that gets occasional flash flooding. Reminds me a lot of a place called Kodachrome Canyon we went through almost 50 years ago. So beautiful and surreal!

Petrification can and has happened in only hundreds of years and less. There is no reason it has to be millions of years. It was most likely formed during the great flood.

You were in a “lahar” (volcanic mud flow) thats why the trees are petrified. Encased in volcanic ash a million years ago. Very soft, erodes quicker than anything else.

Thanks for that information. I got reamed by some guy that claimed a 2 yr old would know that limestone sees no volcanic activity. It was so hostile I quit watching but I did a lot of reading and found "no volcanic activity in the southwest limestone terrain" to be inaccurate. Lots of volcanic activity to this day. Fascinating. I had the opportunity to see some of it 1st hand. 😊

You can tell that it was a wetland because the logs are shattered crosswise and shed all their outer bark when they fell. The land looked so different during that time. Imagining it gives one a sense of _isekai._

It absolutely is. It's a huge grave yard. Remember from lion king,.. the Disney cartoon.. elephant grave yard. And this tells me that dinosaurs didn't roam millions of year etc ago. This is surface and exposed. And was insinterated. People are responsible for it. I can't wrap my head around what he just drifted to find on that size scale.. yet. But it's profound. Tell me I'm coo-coo ca-chew and way off because I'd think exposing their timelines, by someone not bought off and paid to say whatever fits into their agenda and control of content and corruption.

That is a truly terrifying level of catastrophe, the entombed petrified log, brings it home. A river of hot mud. Weird that it is also quite beautiful, sculptural, natures art. It is incredible also that the first broken up petrified log had lichens and actual plants able to source ancient minerals for life. The plants must use dew for a water source. Thank you so much for showing us this.

Love this place. There's apparently an old Chacoan road that runs through those badlands, leading from Chaco Canyon to the pueblo at Aztec Ruins. Next time you head out there keep an eye out for bones! You can find dinosaur bones in the soft mudstones

And some people say there's nothing in a desert. Deserts are rich with diverse wonders. Those amazing stone formations, the petrified wood, the tiny little plants making life happen out there. I grew up in Forks WA, a dark and rainy place most of the time. We always had huge forests of giant trees, rivers, streams, and the ocean not too far away. But we didn't get enough light. That's maybe another reason why I love deserts, because they are the opposite of what I grew weary of. Huge blue skies are an immense joy to me. The heat, the dry, the mineral and sage smells. When I'm away for too long, I miss the cool, wet mosses of home, but when I'm in a desert, it takes a good long while before I get homesick. I've got to say that your videos are the very best desert videos I've seen. It's the greatest thing to be out there hiking and exploring vicariously through you. Heck, even seeing a piece of ancient pottery on the ground is sublime. But we get to go up on cliffsides and check out old native buildings close up, even seeing an old corn cob in an ancient grain storage structure, fingermarks in the mortar, smoke on the ceilings. Really great stuff here. Glad I subscribed!

Hiking in extreme areas really helps me understand what our ancestors faced as they attempted to survive in new environments. Imagine you’re walking through this area and you’re like “okay I need to boil some drinking water.” But, no wood. Also no water. 💀

Pretty amazing to try picturing what this land must have looked like in ancient times. With trees of the size to leave petrified trunks, and the different types of soils... it must have been a wet-forestland of massive trees and running rivers at one time. Thanks for the adventure.

I spend a lot of time out in relative wilderness, photographing stars mostly. It is mostly quiet. One night and standing in about a foot of water with camera on a tripod, photographing bats. I'd set up a small lamp to attract bugs and subsequently bats (it worked!). Concentrating super hard and being very engrossed, a branch falls off a tree and into the water behind me. You had better believe a man can run on water.

About eight years ago, my younger brother traveled north and I traveled east and we met in a city near this place. We got up early and drove out there. We hiked and photographed all day long, getting back to the truck just at sunset and didn't see enough of the area. It's an incredible place. Nice video work and it brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks.

How do you not get lost and you are able to find your way back to your car? If there are birds, shouldn't water be somewhere? Another question, how is the petrified wood cut so smoothly and perfectly in pieces? So much I am amazed by. Those sculptures up on the pedestals are mind boggling. Really cool video. Oh the stars .. WOW just WOW.
