What a find! If you're tired of the crowds while you're staying in St Ives, and fancy a little spot of remote and quiet stunning beauty, I think I have found the place. Portheras Cove stunning views on the hike down and the beach is one of Cornwall's best, similar to Porthcurno in my opinion, if not better.

I want to move to Cornwall in about 4 years time, I’m saving so hard in order to buy a place with a smaller mortgage so o can just get a job working in a shop or something rather than being in corporate . I want my kids to have a nice life and I can’t think of anything better than leaving London for Cornwall - hope my dream comes true 🙏🏻

Good luck! My son and his partner have just moved into a new build, they are going up everywhere, it was their only chance to get out of renting, it used to be farmland but so many people are moving in from all over and small towns and villages are being changed beyond recognition. Drs surgeries are turning down new patients and schools aren’t now big enough. Homes are needed here because so many original and older places are used as holiday homes. Where I have lived almost all of my life, it is now closed during the winter, locals have gone up country to find work and can’t afford to come back. It’s a lovely place to live, but summer is so busy, I sometimes understand how some of the smaller places in the world rely on tourism, but unfortunately the tourist don’t appreciate that people actually do live here all year round, when you hear the “West Country” accent being used and when you see the rubbish left (not all left by tourists) The traffic can be awful too, so many bigger cars these days and they drive like they do at home, where they are from. I don’t want to have a go at tourists or those that want to move here, but if you want to live here because of the way of life, the scenery, don’t come in and rebuild, you are then changing the place to suit you. So many places are bought, house on site knocked down, then a huge ugly building built over what was a pretty garden. Live here by all means, we aren’t unfriendly, but we would just prefer it if incomers realised it is not a good idea to rebuild and make everything look modern. Love the Duchy by all means, but please love what it is, not what you can make it. I apologise if I sound unfriendly, I’m far from it, but the Cornwall of my grandparents and my parents time, of my childhood is disappearing too fast. Love it, but stop changing it.

A very beautiful beach! I walked past it in 2019, but we were unfortunately pretty stressed after a rather unpleasant bovine encounter from the top of the path and downwards. So we just walked on. And therefore it is really nice to get a good look at it now :) Thank you! :-) I have some facts too: Did you know that the fields in the hillside above the beach are the oldest cultivated fields in the UK, and still in use today? From 5000 years back. And because of your great sense of humour, I prefer you to Julia Bradbury :-)

@@WendallExplores We were walking here: goo.gl/maps/w4Pph1eHkkJuhjbf6 And there were many cows and a longhorn bull grazing peacefully without any fence towards the path. But suddenly one cow started to moo and went quite fast towards us. We barely managed to get through the gate and close it. We were feeling safe, but suddenly the cow had found a hole in the stone wall and there she came quite rapidly down the path, and stopped just beside us. OK enough, but the path is narrow and there is only schrubbery beside it and these animals are big. And then the other cows decided to come too. Those also passed us quite fast. We managed to step (only) half a metre outside the path, to try to avoid being pushed over, and then the bull came, and stood right beside us with the long horns and looked at us for quite a while. I must say I was pretty scared, standing still as stone statues. At last they found their way further down in the fields, and we dared to walk the path and through a kissing gate. Puh! And then we went down towards the cove. There we met a couple who said that the farmer had been a bit curious about how the cows would behave. We were not injured, but could very well have been pushed over and into the sharp bushes. And he should mend that opening in the stone wall I think :) They were mooing a lot for a long time after.
@WendallExplores
@WendallExplores 3 жыл бұрын
@Torunn Bjøreid the mistake you may have made was to not stand your ground, be very big and loud at the first cow. They are daft things and always back down. The bull would be a different story. Glad you survived to tell the tale!
@TravellingTorunn
@TravellingTorunn 3 жыл бұрын
@@WendallExplores I see what you mean, and I would probably have tried that if it was on a field. But we had managed to get through the gate, and felt safe. And after the gate the path went downhill and the first cow came very fast. It actually stopped, and I talked calmly to it and I thought it would be OK, and it walked further down. But then all the other cows suddenly came running down after each other from the hole in the stone wall. There were some tons of mooing animals hurrying in my direction. And there was no way I would have stood in their way trying to look big and loud :-) And the bull was less than a metre away from us with the pointy horns. Happy to be a surviver ;-) And with no scars from the schrubbery :)

I dont know if I should reveal this but there is a spot that is just as beautiful and more remote and free from people than Portheras just south of Zennor Head called Veor Cove. It is not an obvious path down to it but once you find the path and the cove you can have the whole beach to yourself even in the Summer. But forget I said all that.

Keep up the great work I look forward to your videos. When you can, a suggestion, perhaps do a tour of port Isaac I’ve never been but looks lovely on the fisherman’s friends film and Doc Martin. Thank you for watching. Yes I think it’s a sessions top, they have a shop in Penzance. I do plan to go further towards the Tamar to do some filming very soon, naturally I am slowly exhausting the locations near to me, mostly because until recently lockdown travel limits forced my hand.

@@WendallExplores thank you for the reply. Will look into the sweatshirt thanks for the tip. Just another idea for exploring my partners family (ancestors) were from a little village called Zennor which is near St Ives. It’s an idea to take a look. Some of his ancestors are buried in the church yard “Christopher’s” and the family owned a house up until 2012, they were Tin miners and then moved to Durham to become coal miners when the mining industry dries up. The church there holds a mermaids chair and apparently the cove about a mile away from the village supposedly has a myth story of seeing Mermaids 🧜‍♀️ at PorthZennor cove. I haven’t seen all round the village but is a lovely historical interesting place that maybe an idea for you to a visit and not far from St Ives where you have been travelling around.

I did some filming in Zennor today, it’s quite local to me, so I know a bit about the Mermaid myth etc. I went into the church and talked about the 600 year old mermaid carving and then took a look around the graveyard but couldn’t find any graves with ‘Christopher’ as the name. I’m not sure if the footage will make it into a video (I wasn’t really ‘on form’!), I’ll see how it comes up when I try to edit it. If I upload a video of it I’ll be sure to let you know here. I just wanted to give you an update on this! 😉

I’m afraid that I do believe that KZfaq is slowly ruining all those hidden gems. Why not just enjoy it and leave the camera at home. I am a photographer and it’s my business to record beautiful locations but I just don’t always publish the location . I hate localism but content like this just makes it worse. Sorry but its the honest truth

I get this type of comment from time to time. You are welcome to your opinion, and I understand and respect it. Here is mine. Did you watch the video? As I said, I have about 500 subscribers, I’m not the BBC. I hugely doubt my video will attract thousands of people to Portheras Cove. If I had hundreds of thousands of subs I may change my philosophy slightly, as I would be conscious of the large online footprint. I would be sympathetic to the fragile local social ecosystem that the huge foot flow would obviously effect. I am unsettled by people telling me what I can and can’t make a video of. I can’t accept how you can say you ‘hate localism’ on one hand but then in a free society tell someone to ‘leave the camera at home’ with the other. I believe strongly in what I also said in the video. I make videos for ALL PEOPLE. The world can only be a better place if people get outside more and experience and interact with natural beauty. At this time more than ever, after the last 12+ months of lockdowns and constriction of freedoms, is it not fair to say that all people deserve their own visit to more remote corners of the Cornish paradise?

Maybe it is. But I'm sure there's much bigger culprits that are "ruining these hidden gems". There's a new TV show on each week it seems that features Cornwall. Heck, they're filming the new GoT here right now. Perhaps the most popular TV series in modern times. Wendall leaving his camera at home and not doing what he wants to enjoy his day is hardly going to make a dent in the "problem". People are coming and you can download and follow a highly detailed map with relative ease these days that anybody who wants to walk to a secluded spot doesn't exactly have to be the next Shackleton. It depends on perspective I guess. Like Wendall said, he lives here and I'm sure there's a lot of other folks who live in Cornwall who have just found a new place to cherish because of Wendall. Maybe that means there's more of us to keep an eye on it now so it doesn't get lost to developers or something else?

@@WendallExplores I respect your right to do what you want and wasn't for a minute trying to tell you what to do. I do however think its a shame that people cannot just enjoy a fragile/beautiful environment without feeling the need to be constantly filming and publicising that location. I do hate localism of any form and know for a fact that revealing hidden gems on KZfaq eggs these people on. That unfortunately makes these type of vids part of the problem. Last summer there was a massive problem with mass tourism destroying beauty spots. I just don't think its very sensitive to be producing this type of content with another chaotic summer on the cards for the West Country. There are lots of things that you can do on you tube with the fantastic footage that you create its just a shame it has to be in this format. Sorry just my opinion.

@@planetjoe I completely agree that there are much bigger culprits. They do however mainly stick to the beaten track. As for GOT. Thats fantasy and certainly not revealing hidden gems. I guess it would be nice to have more people protecting these spots, unfortunately that is rarely how it turns out. An interesting debate that will no doubt continue to rage.
