My son has a 60s J45, one owner his grandfather left to him when he passed away. He and I use to sing every week at church, nursing homes, and at his house. It's all original, with only one buckle rash on the back, and some crazing in the finish, but it's beautiful! I've been playing since I was in my early teens. It's the BEST guitar I've ever played in my life. My son didn't know if he should be disappointed that he didn't get the 80s Martin HD28, but I said, ''No, that's the guitar you want!''

I own a 1971 J-50 that I purchased new in 1971. NORLIN made and is an early square shoulder style but still made well. It has held its own for 52 years now. It has a new bridge (adjustable bridge gone) and bridge plate, a re-fret and Grover USA Pat. Applied For tuners. Still some divots in the fretboard after the refret. I learned on 12 string and tend to grab the neck pretty hard in the day. Done by Wooden Music in Chicago in the 1980s. She hangs within reach and is played regularly, although my workhorse is now a D35. Her voice is sweet and mellow as one expects from mahogany.

Oh, man. I'm a J-50 person. I've got a '52 and a '64. Both are amazing in their own ways. The '64 still has the bigger neck, though, with the 1 11/16" nut width. Great looking old Gibson, though! Way cool for that kid. Hopefully he'll discover Lightnin' Hopkins somewhere along the way, too.

I bought one of these! mines a 1965 I saved up money from working in Highschool at a McDonalds. I’ve had it 7 years now will never get rid of it ! Nice video!

Great video! I rescued my Gibson J50 from my church Facebook page. The person was just giving it away. I just had a local repair shop do a service on it. The sound that this guitar makes is incredible. It actually made me cry the first time I played it.

Great video. I am a big fan of the narrow, slim neck profile on these guitars. I have a 66 Epiphone Texan FT79N that has the thinnest neck profile of any guitar I've ever played and I absolutely love it. Keep up the awesome videos.

Jeremy, my dad owns one just like that. I think his is a ‘65. His has a larger neck than this one. His dad bought it from his brother (my dad’s uncle) and gave it to him as a birthday present in early 1993. This has been my dad’s only acoustic since 1993 and it is the most perfect instrument. I’ve gotten to watch it wear over the years and the sound has only gotten better. Those guitars are outstanding.

Jeremy, awesome video. Big J-50 fan as I bought a 2021 50's re-issue this year. Regarding the cracks in the top, I know often times these would be generated from the screws that Gibson used to add additional reinforcement for the bridge to the top of the guitar. As the bridges would lift over time, the screws located under those mother of pearl dots on the bridge would bear the majority of the load from the string tension and causing cracks in the top. Learned about this from Rosa String Works as they do many, many bridge replacements on old Gibsons.

I just bought a 1968 J 50 about a year ago. The 1968 j-50 has the Gibson emblem on the pickguard, mine has the original adjustable Bridge also has the very small neck. I had my repair guy straighten out a few cracks where the adjustable Bridge set wonderful guitar hell of a find.

I have a Gibson ADJ J-50 circa 1961 with the ‘tiny neck’ that was given to me in 1972….and has been my baby ever since….yea she’s seen a lot of bumps and bruises along the way and the neck/headstock took a hit in 79 (major surgery to fix) but she is mine and will probably be buried with me…..nothing beats this guitar…and I have looked far and wide. Thanks for your video….I beam with pride whenever I see one of her cousins. Oh yea…..we live up in the mountains too……a bit further South from you.

I never though that the adjustable saddle was a cost saving measure, surely it had to cost more to make? I thought it was a intended to be a game changer, but just had negative repercussions. I assumed it was supposed to be their "truss rod" of the 60's.

Am adjustable saddle may be more expensive to manufacture, but a set one is more labor intensive and time consuming to cut/polish to the appropriate fit for each specific instrument. They're not one size fits all like the former.

I love the Shenandoah region. I'm a Marylander but I went down to Picker's Supply in Fredericksburg, VA and walked out with a Beautiful 1939 Gibson L-50 that came from an original owner in the Shenandoah Valley.

You’re right about what’s in the mountains. I regularly played some jams in Kentucky. You would be amazed what people brought to those jams. Guys in their 60s bringing their Daddy’s Martin that they got when he passed. They weren’t selling though for the most part these folks could have used the money and some of the guitars you could buy a new truck with what they were worth. It was their Daddy’s and it will be their grandchild’s next.

I just bought a j-50 at the local pawn shop for 75 bucks that came with a seymour woody pickup. I got lucky friends but it needs a ton of work. I expect to drop around 300-500 in repairs.

I have a '61 J-50. It has an adjustable saddle and looks like it was dragged on the back of a truck. It's my favorite acoustic ever and I've owned dozens of old Gibsons and Martins.

Hey Jeremy what overall did/would u recommend to the guitar? And Im not sure if I understand what u meant with regards to the truss rod and action relationship. Every tech/luthier has said that the action is adjusted primarily through saddle height and truss rod. Anyway thatts some beautiful country up there, I used to go to Clifftop WV for fiddle conventions and man it was pretty. The New River Gorge is incredible.

I had a 69 dove with that tiny little neck and while it sounded tremendous I just couldn’t play it and eventually sold it to buy a 62 J50 in similar condition to this one and really my favorite all around guitar acoustic or electric

I have a 68 j50adj that I bought from a good friend in about 1993 for 200 dollars. Has a few cracks in the back but otherwise in very good condition. Lost that friend in 95 and will never sell it and still play it often.

Strange coincidence. I found that same model guitar in the Jefferson National Forest about six years ago. It was in a cave I stumbled upon. There was also a skeleton in there with the skull missing. It plays pretty well but I had to put new strings on it.

I have a beautiful screwed guard 68-69 hummingbird with the wide 1-11/16 nut width and I can’t figure out why it doesn’t have the smaller width. It has a couple other odd specs that I’d love to figure out. The serial numbers on the mid to late 60’s Gibson's aren’t super helpful either. I did see one exactly like mine on a internet auction that had a really close serial number to mine and it also had the wide nut width and the other odd specs as mine- it was advertised as a special order. It was supposedly 1 of 2 special ordered 1-11/16 nut width 1968 Hummingbirds and I’m wondering if mine could be the other? Probably never know unfortunately

I would think that at least the first 5 frets have been replaced. To get the deep fretboard wear that the guitar shows at the first few frets, the frets would have also been very worn.

funny you are wearing a Gallagher shirt. I had a very similar J50 in my college days, but could never really hang with that skinny neck. I knew a guy selling a Gallagher 71 Special for $400 so I sold the Gibson to my room mate for $400 and bought the Gallagher. We both still have those guitars all these years later

Hey, Jeremy, I have this same guitar, a '67 J-50 I bought new in Augusta, GA, in 1967 before going overseas in the service. It's in fabulous condition and I love it, but I have a question. Mine has an adjustable rosewood saddle. Try as I might, I can find no evidence on any of the KZfaq videos of J-50s that the J-50 ever had a rosewood saddle. What I'd like to do is replace the rosewood with bone, but without switching out the entire bridge. Is that possible?

Hey Jon - I have a 1967 with rosewood bridge - adjustable saddle too. Ain't no way I'd ever change it - it's by far the nicest guitar I've ever played. It has a certain mojo - a certain voice that just takes me. I have a real nice Martin OM18 with the clearest sweetest tone and it's oh so playable - a real keeper... But when I want to connect with my own creative flow - it's the J50 that I reach for... it's the J50 that teaches me new songs, new chords and new approaches... it's my forever guitar for sure. Hope you find the mojo in your one... I don't think there's a way to keep the bridge adjustable and convert it to bone. Not without a whole lot of know-how and skill... you'd need a real craftsman to design and build such a thing. Good luck mate!

Been told my 52 Gibson L needs a neck reset... but I am scared... even though I do have experienced luthiers here to do it... it’s the cost... it’s like $1000 to get it done I have been told.

The specification you’re looking for is the nut width. Martin’s are usually 1-11/16”, Taylor can be 1-3/4”. The neck in this video from this era of J45/J50 are more like 1-9/16 or even smaller. It’s a stark and noticeable change.

I own a Gibson J50 Deluxe sn# 614323, made in USA is stamped near the serial number. I was just a kid when I picked it up and I am thinking it was 1970. I can't find a site that will tell me the year of it. Would you be able to tell from the serial# ? Thanks, Ken

It's a norlin era, square shouldered dread. Likely plywood bridge plate and double x bracing.

Pretty thorough exterior exam but you did not address the internal potential issues such as loose or cracked bracing and bridge pad issues. Good video and story though!

I read somewhere on the net that J-50s are the same as J-45s, but without the sunburst finish. That doesn't seem right, as others, and you, have said that the necks are really thin, giving it the feel of an electric model. Any thoughts?

They're right, j-45s and j50s are the same except for the top finish. Same thing with LG-2's and LG-3's

The necks went super thin about ‘67. I’ve got a ‘69 J45 with a hilariously thin neck.

@@davidkoral1673 no problem. Originally the J45 were $45 and J50 were $50 when they were first released. The J50’s had better spruce tops and were finished in natural, whereas the J45s got tops that were less visually appealing but the sunburst finish hides ~60% of those imperfections. So throughout their history, the J45 and J50 are exactly the same guitar just with different finishes. There are probably special editions or artist editions that differ a bit.

National Forests and some national parks have inholdings, land that people didn’t sell or that the government purchased with lifetime estates, the owner gets to live on it for the rest of their life. Some of this stuff in the Appalachians was really contentious so there’s little love for outsiders and none at all for government folks like Park Rangers. Getting shot at is pretty common, though back in the day it most often wasn’t intended to be harmful. At least not the first shot.

For God's sake people, trim your left hand fingernails! Years of playing with, even slightly, long fingernails can butcher the fretboard. Also don't use light gauge string on acoustics, especially short scale Gibsons. Won't someone think of the fingerboards! 😢
