What's funny is how many people don't realize how big Madagascar actually is! It looks so tiny next to Africa but on a map if you put it on top of the United States, it covers like the Eastern United States LOL.... watching this just makes me wish we had safe access to the Congo. God only knows what's in there that hasn't been discovered yet

Part of it is probably because of the bizarre scale of flat maps. It makes countries look way bigger as you move toward the poles and way smaller at the equator. Have you seen yet program that lets you move a country around the globe to compare sizes.

Thank you for showing the rain frog Dav! I Just got a pair of beautiful Bronze Mantella's and have been on a kick with the frogs of Madigascar. Madagascar cat eyed snake is easy to find in Madagascar. During the time where water hyacinths were removed from Lake Ravelobe (Ankarafantsika National Park), villagers found many individuals. This species will also be very active from the beginning of the rainy season until the end. You can usually find them in damp places, and sometimes in showers. It is among the 3 snakes that cause a lot of pain in the area where they have been bitten.

I’ve kept a few species of uroplatus and they’re without doubt my favourite gecko genus. I would stand looking into my average size vivs trying to find them and standing for 30+ min and still not being able to see them as their camouflage is that good. Some people will think thats kind of pointless if you can’t see them but they come out and hunt and night and it’s fantastic to watch

I know this is a couple months old, but Thailand have been importing a lot of Greater Bamboo Lemur these last couple years from Africa; from what I seen and heard. Sadly, you can see even small babies on the Chatuchak Market in Bangkok. It’s weird because as soon as the Wildlife Justice Commission gets involved, a couple days later the vendors will have them on the market again.😢

@ Interesting. From my research you handled not one but two venomous snakes bare handed. The Leaf nose snake actually has a pretty potent and very unique venom as snakes go. It is said the venom usually kills there prey instantly but is just "Very painful" to humans. The other is also unique as it is mildly venomous and a constrictor. When you google snakes with unique venom the madagascar leaf nose snake actually pops up with just a few other snales.. maybe 5 or so.

Those Leaf-Nosed Snakes are cool, Houston Zoo had one back in 2016, I don't think they still do due their short lifespans but nonetheless a cool and unusual snake. I also think that Brookesia chameleons should be more popular, they may not be as colorful but I bet people could make some crazy bioactive setups for them.

@lizziesmusicmaking Жыл бұрын
The brookesia chameleons are really neat. I believe they're mostly leaf litter dwellers. Oddly enough the smallest geckos and the smallest frogs are also leaf litter dwellers. There must be some special niche for extremely tiny lizards and frogs in the leaf litter. I wish we knew more about the ecology of these species. I want to know what it is about leaf litter that causes mini lizards and frogs.

@@davidvento5481 Has that rostral protuberance / projection ever been observed, either in the wild or in captivity, being utilized by the snake for prey procurement? (or for any other function).
@davidvento5481
@davidvento5481 Жыл бұрын
@@Steevee14 I don’t believe they know definitively but from what I understand they’re used by males to attract females during courtship rather than searching for prey. Males of most species (both snakes & lizards) have larger, more pronounced rostral protuberances. This would rule out probing for food like for example the “Star-Nosed Moles” (why would the male have the advantage?) Some people speculate they act like the “horns” on Sidewinder Rattlesnakes as an aid in gauging temperature but in those species both sexes have equal-sized projections. I’d put my money on courtship displays for females, the bigger projection attracts more mates; perhaps like in humans; “big nose, big ho... er, hemipenis!” lol
