I attempt to repair the timing of my cheap Range Rover’s engine, but I ran into several surprising issues that make things a bit more complicated.

I just don’t think enough of these old rovers make it to a point where they are rebuilt before something else happens where it becomes not pragmatic for the owner to do it , so I don’t think there’s gonna be a big market out there for over sized pistons

As much as I'd enjoy watching you do a full engine out rebuild, even here in the UK (It's spiritual homeland) engine parts aren't cheap for the later V8 Range Rovers, so before stripping it much further, I'd be tempted to start pricing up EVERYTHING you know you'll need, plus anything you COULD need in order to do the rebuild. In some cases It's occasionally only fractionally more expensive to source a fully reconditioned engine. It might even work out better value to find some company this side of the pond to buy a recon unit from and get it shipped over (less rare over here = less money over here, and as the £ is worth sod all at the minute, it could be worth looking into). Even something like a genuine full gasket set Is likely to set you back well over 500 USD, so when you start adding up all the little "Worth replacing while it's apart" bits, it starts getting alarmingly pricey really fast.

@@hamyncheese I guess your wife is a certified auto mechanic and would know everything discussed on most car channels? I bet she , if youre even married, is pretty much like many women and doesnt know or even care to know how to work on a vehicle. Thats why i said i like the way he explains things, he tells us in a very easy to understand manor that even my wife could follow and understand exactly whats wrong and how he is going to fix it. I showed my wife my comment and showed her your comment, you wouldnt believe me if i told you what she said about you, haha. As for me "allowing" her to do anything, that doesnt happen because she thinks for herself and doesnt need me or anyone to LET her do anything. Hey brother glad those tools look to be working smooth for you so far! As soon as I saw the copper I realized I should have sent you my long straight edge that I used to check my block as well. This whole thing is deja vu lol. If the block isn't warped and the crank isn't damaged, since I think getting oversized bearings might be nearly impossible, I definitely vote to go further than I did and do a rebuild and successfully save one of these AJ133s for once! It would be a cool video series to follow the engine being rebuilt, but honestly it may exceed the cost of what the vehicle is worth very quickly, also I would suggest either rebuilding or replacing the alternator with that much oil getting on it like that. It won’t be long for this world and it’s so much easier to access right now while you have everything disassembled.

Up until this point, I've been impressed with your ability to do just about anything you put your mind to. But, this? Even if you rebuild the engine and get it "like new", you're whistling past the graveyard on this one. There's still another million things that could go wrong, most, by design, very expensive to fix/replace. Exhibit one: You were holding your breath on the air suspension. Do yourself a favor and push this thing into the nearest river/lake/canal. Then, report it stolen. Let the insurance company pay or write it off your taxes. PS There's a reason why so many have failed.

I had this engine on my 2011 Jag XF: it was awesome. The Jags for whatever reason didn't seem to suffer quite as much from the timing tensioner design flaw, though it was still present. On the subject of head gaskets, I don't recall these engines being known for problems BUT they have had several redesigns of the water pump and associated plumbing around it. I replaced my water pump, it was noisy and loose at 60,000Km which isn't long at all. I wonder if the water pump died in this beast and it ran HOT for a little while? It's good your lifting the heads off, there's lots you can check. One other thing I learnt - every screw and faster going into the head or the block must never be overtightened by even a quarter NM - there are two torques, just right and stripped thread... You'll notice the water pump bolts are long and fine pitched and it's easy to do that. Run them down gently until the first click on the torque wrench and stop - the old trick of 'make it click again to be sure' is enough to make some aluminium confetti!

Hey Waldo, I’ve only just taken notice of your channel and wish that I found it sooner. I’ve always wished to own a Range Rover but shied away because of the cost of when things go wrong. I’ve just retired and now is the time to live the dream, you breath inspiration and as I now have bags of time on my hands, its now RR ownership for me. Looking forward in catching up with all of your videos. Good job Waldo, respect for Scotland UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I agree! Rebuild it. You're already 9/10's of the way there... just do the extra and the whole thing. Great video by the way! Really enjoying it!

Great video, I’m just now interested in Range rovers. Seeing your videos enlightens me, and builds my dream even more to work and own a rover myself. I can’t wait to see more content from you! Thank you very much.

I saw your first range rover video and got hooked to your channel. Even though it might cost you some more money but it will get you new subscribers. I vote for a rebuild.

I personally would pull everything apart. Whenever I'm working on one of my cars if I have to remove six different wear items to get to what I'm in there to fix I'm replacing everything. One good thing with me doing things like that it stops a lot of my friends from asking me to work on their car. They don't like the idea of replacing things that have it broke yet. Whenever I change fan belts and spark plugs and wires I have a box that I keep in the back of each of my cars with those items. That way if you were traveling and you throw a belt for some reason you don't need to go to the store you got one in the trunk. I'm really looking forward to watching the next video. I've been waiting to see what happened to this engine. It's hard to believe that it was still running prior to taking it apart. As always and I made sure to give you a big old thumbs up. Look forward to seeing the next video.
