The 4.6 is a fabulous motor and I have owned several and even had a 4.6L 3 valve in m 2005 Mustang GT. That didn't have the same issues of the 5.4L 3 valve but you can fix this engine.Being the guy said he had it rebuilt,I'm sure something was left out or not properly tensioned to cause the chain to come off the sprocket. The head and valved could be just fine and this is a nice car so fix it right. I would fix the 2002 if he body and interior are in good shape because Town Cars and Grand Marquis are bringing big money now, running and clean that is.

An old friend passed and left a garage full of beautiful, perfect appearing, black Lincoln Town Cars. He was a stickler for maintaining swirl free black paint. Gleaming, each one had problems making them undriveable (seized brakes, bad fuel). I was able to get one started to drive to his funeral. All were auctioned off.

Any chance pulling the rad to get access and seeing if you can get timing chain on again? At least just long enough to try do a compression test? If you have compression then maybe look at new chain and tensioners. I’d prefer getting this running over any swop…

Honestly, the 4.6L 2-V's are extremely reliable unless you do something really stupid. If this started happening after all the previouse engine work, I'd look at the engine. I'm wondering if a timing chain tensioner or timing chain guides went, or they didn't install them correctly?

Several years ago I bought a 96' Lincoln Town Car that had an Interceptor motor (used in Police cars) and only 123,000 or so miles on it. VERY LOW MILES for the car's age. It was previously owned by an old man and his wife had passed a couple of years earlier. He kept a notebook of meticulous records that backed up the low mileage. Not a blemish inside or out. All the interior and carpet looked new. They literally only drove the car to church and the grocery store. An absolute cream puff! The only issue was that the vinyl roof was starting to dry out and crack. I gave him the $1,500 he was asking. It handled extremely well for such a big car and floated like you were riding a cloud. I regret having to sell it but couldn't turn down the $3,500 I was offered for it. I did have the vinyl roof replaced and put a very nice stereo in it. Ford's Quality Control was on point in the late 90's.

@@FredFukkinBear i think that he was laughing because the interceptor motor isnt actually anything more than a tune that is programmed into the ecm and that really only entails removing the speed limiter and maybe slightly more fuel. the engine in and of itself though is exactly the same. outside of the engine you had better radiators and more cooling for the transmission better suspension, different gearing, and various other things like that. the engine though isnt any different internally. the days of the police engines being souped up are over as it is all about the computers and the tunes that reside in them.

Just found this channel, although I wouldnt troubleshoot in that order I have to tell ya recent story. I picked up a 2001 gmc safari 76k miles with a 4.3 for $2500. Was making a god awful noise like the front pump was on its way out (seller thought) I got it home and took the entire rotating front off after my stethoscope told me nothing. Ended up being the plastic rad fan had stress fractured all the way around every bolt and would never know unless you removed the clutch from the fan, it was on the verge of an earth shattering kaboom. All is well now.

@@OldeCarrGuy There was just no way to know unless you pulled the clutch fan off and for some people they don't have the proper spanner wrench to do that plus you would then have to remove the actual clutch to see behind it. So the cool thing was it's a 21-year-old vehicle with very low mileage however the bad thing is that it's a 20 some year old vehicle with very low mileage LOL. I've also found out through some research that the HVAC case are very brittle and they basically will disintegrate in your hands so anybody that reads this and they ever find an astral van or a GMC safari? Check the case where the blower motor goes. I'm going to try and clean it as best I can and probably wrap it in fiberglass mesh but we'll see, but the vehicle is clean and it runs great

To hurt a 4.6 2valve you really have to abuse it, which I suspect this was. Just change the fluids and filters at a reasonable mileage. My 96 LTC has 215K on it. Mostly normal wear items are the only repair costs. I had one set of plugs and wires and one coil replaced. I run MotorCraft synthetic blend oil. Still gets 23-25 highway mpg. Averages about 21. BTW, why don't you invest in one of the relatively inexpensive scan tools for around $300 that do quite a bit for what they are? Not the $5000 to $10,000 Snap On or Macs. They can save you a lot of time by narrowing down the areas you need to look at

The Panther cars are wonderful. I'm a 63 year old just retired fleet mechanic. I've worked on a lot of them. I drive one, and plan to drive one for the rest of my life. There are plenty of them around, and there will be enough parts available to keep them going for decades. I know everything there is to know about them, and if/when I become physically unable to work on them, any independent shop can work on them. No special dealer only tools or software required. Here in the Phoenix, AZ area they do not rust. I prefer the 2003 and up Grand Marquis. Front end is much stronger on the 2003 and up, and the Grand Marquis has a 2.73 rear axle. When combined with the 4 speed AODE transmission I can get 30 mpg on the highway at 65 mph with the cruise control on. I'm 6' 240, and they are big comfortable cars. The 2.73 rear axle will also fit on the Crown Vic P71 police car.

My '06 Grand Marquis has absolutely zero rust anywhere, but it's Performance White paint is peeling off all over. It cannot be repainted without removing ALL of the original paint, which is defective. The cost would exceed the value of the car. I couldn't believe how bad the underside of that Lincoln looked. Today I bought a 2001 lincoln town car from a buddy that I work with..it's a Florida car and looks good everywhere except for the top...some Yankee designer thought it would be a good idea to glue and screw a fiberglass shell and vinyl to the roof...I knew that there was going to be some rust but dsmn it man, it's worse than I imagined..I tried to get it for 500 but he wouldn't take less than 900..it runs like new and has ice cold ac..but I got to cut the top off and build another one..mad max, cyberpunk, or chevy Nomad style....I must meditate on this

I’m not 100% sure when they switched from the two coil packs to the coil over plug set up, but I think it was with the 98 body change. Give the free motor a look, but if it’s got coil over setup it will probably be worth the extra money to save the time of switching everything over, gasket kit, and still running the risk that you have bad parts on the old engine that get swapped over.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called "Abgasbespaßungsverbots- und Kontrollverordnung" in German.)

Suck, squueze, bang, blow. A great marriage and what a engine does to run. Gotta have fuel, air, spark. U got PLENTY of spark from what I can see. The guides are plastic. Old brittle plastic. Either it broke, tensioner petered out, or no fuel getting to it. Idk I've seen all the above and more in 30 years. These 4.6 2V are rock solid engines. Not high HP but will go 700k with service and care easily. A few guys I know run these for decades as taxis and livery service. They buy after 250k for cheap then use until they poop out. All have gone at least 500 or more if no bad drivers. Great cars. Great engines. Just don't flush trans. Sure way to kill it. I got 2. 07 designer with 115k and 99 Cartier with 252k. Both have needed very lil besides basic service. No walking but for a rotted starter power lead from salt brine. And I could've drove but if shut down I'd had to jack it up and crawl under to start. YOU seem like you are familiar with engines. I'm not an engine guy, but if your car has a main computer, if you have no mechanical problems with your engine, after you replace plugs and any bad connectors to those plugs, if you still have your engine light come on after you drive the car a while, have a Ford dealer reprogram the main computer. A lot of Ford dealers don't even know your main computer can be reprogrammed. PInes Ford in Pembroke Pines FL is one of the few Ford dealers in South Florida that will reprogram your main computer. I see your car has a distributor, so it probably has a single coil. Newer Ford V8's have a coil for every spark plug. IF your AC compressor is not working, reprogramming the main computer will reactivate the AC compressor, assuming there's nothing wrong with the AC compressor. The main computer will shut down the AC compressor to protect it, until the computer is reprogrammed.

Just want to help, with some additional info, a google search shows your car does have a main computer. I'm pasting the top results for you below. I have a 2004 Marquis which was misfiring, engine light would keep coming on after mechanics replaced a lot of parts that really didn't solve the problem . I got some excellent help from a Ford master technician on youtube, so will pass that on for you.....As far as scanners go, the average scanner can tell you if a particular cylinder is misfiring. They can't tell you if the problem is the plug, the coil, the connector to the plug etc. The most those scanners can do is shut off your engine light. However, if there is still a problem with a coil or a connector, the engine light will eventually come back on. If the car continues to be driven without resolving the problem, eventually the AC compressor will be shut down by the main computer. There is a more expensive scanner, called a "bidirectional scanner". This type of scanner can reprogram the main computer; however, to do so, a Ford subscription would need to be purchased for that scanner. The master tech says that subscription is about 20 dollars, (many be more now?) I do not know what the process is to reprogram, or how difficult it is. According to what I'm pasting for you, they claim that replacement computers come already programmed or reprogrammed. 1997 Lincoln Town Car 4.6L PCM - Car Computer Exchangecarcomputerexchange.com › lincoln › prod_2359 do 1997 Lincoln's have a main computer? from carcomputerexchange.com DESCRIPTION ; This is a Lincoln OEM computer for a 1997 Town Car 4.6L ·. ; LIFETIME WARRANTY w/ Core Exchange. ; Fully rebuilt, programmed, and tested for quality. $199.95 · ‎$19.95 delivery · ‎In stock Engine Computer Programmed/Updated 1997 Lincoln Town Car 4.6 ...www.ebay.com › itm If you do not have PATS, your unit will be Plug and Play. ... Hey, nice score! $500 Canadian what's that like $325 USD? Even if that puppy needs an engine, still a great deal if it rides anything close to a Cadillac? Body and interior is in very nice driver shape for a car that old. It's a Ford so what about a Ford 300 L6 with that LS head swap on it? You take a set of 4.8L or 5.3L LS heads and you cut one cylinder off of each head and weld them together as one 6 cylinder head. A little bit of fabrication making an intake and exhaust and you're off to the races. A 4.6L is only 281 cid so the 6 will be more cubes and should make more HP & torque with the LS heads now feeding it. If you wanted something with even more grunt you could always add a turbo in that mix? this would be a WAY cool swap for that car! Sixfan would be jealous if you went this route. A good old fashion sbc swap would also be cool. Perhaps a budget sbc 383 would be a good choice, with the right heads, intake and cam it would get better fuel economy than the 4.6L because of the superior torque output. The only other thing for a car like that would be to put the body on a 4x4 truck frame which would probably be more work than an Old Car Guy would want to do? I'm about 10 years older than you and think that would be cool but would be to much for me so wouldn't blame you for not doing it. But then again, I don't have a hoist I can use to do something like that so.....? I would probably think about if I had a hoist, not sure if it would make it further though? It would probably depend on if I could find a deal on the donor truck that would work best? Seen an old Cadillac on a Ford truck frame on the Roy Mako yt channel, that thing looked VERY cool! Glad to see you have a new project car, can't wait to see what you do with it?

@@OldeCarrGuy I get it so a Ford 300 L6 is probably on the more inexpensive side to source I would guess it would be less expensive than a boring 4.6L replacement? Used 4.8L or 5.3L LS heads are economical. I think you have a welder IIRC if so fabricating an intake shouldn't be to hard you might even be able to make an adapter to fit a 300 intake on the new head? 2 driver side LS exhaust manifolds slightly modified to work together on the same side perhaps? The hardest part of this swap would be getting the head welded together so knowing someone that can weld aluminum would be mandatory to get the head ready to bolt on. See what kind of power plants are available and maybe have a vote on which one to use? If you were closer I would donate something that you could use as long as you wanted to swap in a sbc in it, I have about 7 of those to choose from I could let go. A 5.7L/6.1L/6.4L Hemi swap would be cool if you can find a deal on one of those, even the less popular 4.7L(IIRC) MOPAR truck engine would probably be a better choice that the 4.6L.Ford. I drove my brother's full size Chrysler pickup with the 4.7L in it and that thing had some get up and go for a big full size pickup with such a small displacement engine in it. The LS headed 300 wouldn't be so budget unfriendly but would be more work BUT would make for some very good yt content. Dealers choice, I'll even watch if you just pull the engine that is in it and fix that one. You didn't even do a compression test on it, did you? Cool car.
