i think the man (‘doctor’) was going to sacrifice the musher to the land or something, and he was giving the musher mushrooms to stop them from thinking straight. At the end the man was trying to kill the musher for the sacrifice. I also think that ‘doctor’ had been stranded long ago and the mushrooms were a substance like droogs that naturally grew on the land. The deer were crazy because it was one of the only plants that grew on the land, therefore the deer had to eat them and were crazy. (thus explains why they would ram you when you had muffins on you) The ‘doctor’ had been stranded in the snow parts and also resorted to the shrooms for food. He turned crazy but his body adapted and he didn’t die to the shrooms, then he started to believe that the land was sacred and alive. He shared his food supply with the musher and then tried to sacrifice him. Another theory is that The ‘doctor’ had been in a group to study the land because the animals were crazy yet smart. The people in the cabin being his group who had cut off the ears and eyes of the deer. He may have strayed too far from the cabin. All this talk about “The deer get lost yet always find a way back to the herd” and “ *We* persevere” was projection on how he had spent all this time trying to find his friends. Maybe the ‘doctor’ had gone crazy while on his own, but was smart enough to not eat the mysterious shrooms and instead studied them. Coming to the conclusion that maybe the mushrooms gave a lead to the deer who ate them. We never truly see the ‘doctor’ eating the shrooms. He found the musher while experimenting and decided to use him for an experiment to see what the shrooms did to humans, rather then just deer. At the end, perhaps the ‘doctor’ was trying to cut off the musher’s ears, or scoop out the musher’s eyes to see if the musher could still navigate the same. A musher isn’t too far from a deer after all. He could have also just wanted to kill the musher and dissect him body, see for himself what the shrooms do to humans. But that’s just a theory. A *game theory* 🤭

As someone with lots of native family in Alaska, this game was very unsettling. I’m currently out of state- but I’ll be heading back for summer, fall, and winter. I’m glad more people understand situations like this. Last winter, we lost 13 individuals to the artic. A group of my close cousins, we’re some of those who perished. Just a 5 mile hike or less can be the death. They were traveling to a nearby village to visit family- but sadly they never made it. One of my cousins, he luckily survived. The other 2, weren’t as lucky. It’s so dangerous out there, this game truly reminded me of it. Minus the being able to see that much and abundance of caribou.

Best guess? They went crazy and believed the land was cursed. Doc and his team went in to survey/map it, but instead got lost in the snowblind. A real thing that happens irl, like when youre in the desert, snowy tundras often are disorientating and the vicious night to day flips are creepily common that you lose track of time. Eitherways they over time, found it impossible to do thier task, so they started losing hope. Again something that happens irl, months completely cut off in a empty/unchanging land can really do a number on you. They do try to study the deer/caribou to figure out how they can survive, this leads then to the shrooms, that maybe psychedelic, similar to LSD, resulting even more mental instability and this belief that the Land is holding them hostage? Some commit sui*ide, while the Doc gets out. Maybe hes still plagued by the land, thinking of it and unable to mentally escape it, like its hunting him, calling him, trying to pull him back and keep him. He wants to be free, so he drags you into it, intending to leave you in his place on the land while he escapes. Not sure why, but the land wants him, not you, maybe because you dont kill as many deer, while the Doc is a straight up Big Game Hunter. Heck. He might even be being punished by the land because of his cruelty/deer murder. In the end after you kill him and drink his flask, which i suspect was filled with shroom juice, you go on one last LSD trip.. Then possibly also become a prisoner of the land because we never see you get to q town, or are allowed to escape the tundra. Eitherways.. Way Doc was talking, made it sound like he was cursed and running. Maybe thats why its called "That which gives chase" Named for the dream chasers that entered the tundra trying to achieve glory by charting the land. And horrifically the chase the nightmare of the failed expedition given to the Doc and crew.

Yea mushrooms can mean many things depending on the culture. I think typically because of their association with death and of course drug use (which also associated with spirituality/higher experiences). This game is a bit older so I am surprised to see it again but also the fact that no one really seems to talk about it. I might do my own research and see what I can find and if I remember I’ll come back here with my thoughts.

This game goes so many different ways all at once that it's hard to tell what the meaning/story really is. I thought it would be interesting if the doctor wasn't necessarily the bad guy. Like, what if all of the sequence of eating the mushrooms in the cave, finding the dogs, getting attacked etc is just a hallucination? What if the reality is that you just killed the guy for no reason while drugged and continued sledding, imagining him talking to you all the while?

Okay so here’s what I think about the story. I kinda assumed it was closer to modern day in the story, but from the technology that is shown in the game, it could easily be anywhere from 1900-1940. I don’t know much about weapons, but the rifle could be one produced between those years. I believe the man you are transporting is the original leader of the expedition of five who went there in the late 1800s, for an unknown number of time and his intentions are unknown and he is likely using the same manipulative tactics he used on the original expedition members to recruit them by telling them they’re now serving a purpose. The man during the expedition at somepoint learned the deer were surviving off of the mushrooms, which seemed to show the past, giving those who eat it directions of where to go. I feel like the man had a liquified form of the mushrooms in his drink the entire game (explains how he cuts you off when you are trying to escape). Some of the expeditions accounts point towards the man losing it at somepoint, talking about him being in a cave alone (mushrooms were growing from him and he was eating them? Symbolism for becoming part of what he was researching?) the rest of the expedition dies at somepoint and the man takes the mushrooms, finds a village and you, and manipulated you into aiding him. This is what I got from critical thinking about what I saw in the story.

So, what I believed happened it was this: There was originally a group of outcasts that decided to travel far from their troubles, they ended in that place. They started to run down on food, so they started to eat deer. These deers have been surviving the winter eating mushrooms, the group started to follow them around because they wanted to get out, but were lost, and that’s how they found the mushrooms. There was a botanic in the team, who probably said eating those mushrooms was beneficial. In reality, it was a desperate measure to stay alive; the deers seemed to be infected with something that was changing their behavior, and the mushrooms were less dangerous to grab, they also make people feel hot which can help to move in colder environments although is really risky since it blocks the body’s response to cold. With time passing, they grew addict to the mushrooms, and probably only consumed that until some of them died of malnutrition, and others were killed or committed suicide. The only survivor was the guy you picked up. The place is not haunted, the guy is just crazy. He has the effects of the mushrooms + the effect of prolonged loneliness, yeah, people go insane if they stay alone in such environment for long periods of time. He created in his mind this “entity”, and he was drugging you. That’s why you would have similar hallucinations. I mean, when you are drugged your mind becomes more manipulable, if you have someone telling you weird stuff, you have higher chances of hallucinating with that stuff. He was also giving you wrong directions, it seemed like he wanted someone else to see what he was seeing, to live what he lived, maybe because he wanted to leave, but felt attached to the place because of what happened with the group, so “his solution” was to leave a replacement while he was away. In the end, you kill him and try to go back to your life, not as affected because you were used to that kind of environment.

Idk if we're applying real life logic to this, but it's impossible to be addicted to mushrooms because the human body builds a tolerance to it very quickly. This means that you cannot eat them everyday and still experience the effects; if someone did that, over time the body would get used to it and it would be the same as eating a normal mushroom; no psychoactive effects. Fun mushroom facts

I’ve sat here for a few minutes now and even tried to read a few articles about this game because I’m genuinely confused on the meaning behind this game as well. All I know is, when you look at the original game itself and the description/summary, it mentions you being a musher who decides to return a scientist back to a location where (I think) he worked with other scientists and promises you both a “great reward” for reaching there. The only thing I can imagine that “great reward” being is him trying to kill you at that said location. Maybe he was some crazy guy (or could actually be just some crazy scientist) and continued to find mushers willing to help him and take them for granted? I can imagine being stranded out there, his food source was probably extremely low and I doubt he could have survived off of just mushrooms and whatever strange drink he had that our character drinks at the end. And whenever they shot the caribou, he never mentioned using their meat to survive off of either. So maybe he was getting into a routine of being psyched out from these mushrooms, that led him to begin a continuous cycle of finding people alone out in the cold and ask for their “help” for a reward, only to take them to wherever he was and kill them and survive off of them by eating them? I’m not 100% sure but after sitting here for awhile trying to make sense of why he would talk in riddles to slowly alter our guys mind and make him eat the mushrooms as well, to make him vulnerable, that’s kind of the story I’ve come up with 😂

Basically I think the guy (who we were transporting) was a native or studying natives to explore one of the frontiers that haven’t been explored yet due to extreme climate. Through the studies they found that the deer were able to survive and thrive in those elements and tried to mimic their lifestyle. I say natives because usually using native wildlife and taking psychedelics are common practices among indigenous peoples. So the main villain was either a native or attempting to mimic native lifestyle to conquer the land that seemed to be unconquerable. In the pursuit of that I believe he and the others that were doing this study stumbled upon an ancient secret of the land having a mind of its own and realizing maybe that there was a way to make that power your own at a price. Maybe the price was providing a worthy sacrifice. To determine if the sacrifice was worth they would have to pass these trails of being able to survive and navigate the land. Maybe the main character was being tested as a worthy sacrifice but instead of falling prey we (the main character) were able to prevail and survive being sacrificed and even perhaps win the final trail and therefore conquering the land itself (sorry if this was kind but i really enjoyed this game

I just started watching Jay again after taking a break from him, because I commented on a video of his, and someone pretended to be Jay and tagged me in their response back to me. They said that I had won a lucky fan experience to meet Jay. I believed it at first, and then it turned out to be a scam. I was really upset over it. I just couldn't believe that there are people like that on the internet. Anyways I wanted to share to see if anyone else has experienced this. And Jay if you've read this, I really missed watching your content. As always YOU'RE THAT DUDE.

@Don't Read My Profile Picture I won't read your name, I won't visit your profile, I won't do anything you tell me not to do. Because I respect your privacy and you're not worth my view. 👍
