Admitting you made a mistake and take steps to correct it, makes you better than most people. And to be fair, the beauty of the fishkeeping hobby is that we learn new things constantly. It wasn't that long ago (about a couple of decades) that it was unthinkable to keep freshwater shrimp in anything but a specialized tank with no other tank mates. And invertebrates other than snails was something you only really saw in saltwater tanks.

Above you have heard it from Richard: 'PROBABLY' he said cold tap won't do no harm and here Jerry says Jason Adams 'rinsed filter sponges in HIS (cold) tap water' which did no harm to the filter organisms. See the difference? Pls do not think YOUR tap carries the same numbers/amount of pH, hardness (Osmosis), O2, chlorine which each separately or altogether won't do no harm or probably does only a little bit. Not to speak of copper, lead or other harmful substances which your tap IN YOUR HOUSE may be polluted with. My advice is, keep on cleaning sponges in tank water while doing a water change. Don't rely on scientific research as long as you don't know the exact parameters under which the research was done.
@majorbruster5916
@majorbruster5916 16 күн бұрын
Without specifying the concentrations of chlorine and chloramine involved, the initial and final numbers of bacteria in the sponges, the porosity of the sponges, the temperature of the water and the contact times, it would be difficult to give out the advice that rinsing in tap water is safe. From what I understand, water quality in the US varies considerably between water company areas. Some supplies are barely drinkable. Look at Flint, Michigan. Basing an opinion on the results of one study drawn from a very wide field of variables is not sufficiently robust. My partner lives in Wales and used to rinse her sponges under the tap. She moved house, 11 miles down the road, set her tanks back up, used the old water, all OK. First filter cleaning, she rinsed the sponges under the tap. Next day - all gold ring danios dead, pair of keyholes in second tank, dead, in the third tank 1 out of the 3 hoplos was dead. Hoplos were said to be bullet proof. She found that the water supply nearer the town was more heavily chlorinated than the supply to the isolated houses where she used to live. I agree with detlefh7090, without knowing the experimental parameters of a study, you should not assume that the results apply across a very wide field. What works for one person in one part of the country, may not work for another further away. This is such a contentious subject that the best advice would have been to leave it as "if your routine works for you, and you are happy with it, then don't change it because someone thousands of miles away tells you to".

Cudos for correcting yourself, that’s humble. TBH, I have also always been under the impression that filter media should be rinsed with old aquarium water and many o=would have been under that impression. At the end of the day, the Chloramine still kills so it’s probably safest to remain with rinsing media with aquarium water because absentmindedness will then result in bacteria dieoff if I understand the issue here correctly.

Thank you, not often you find a Ytber willing to make a video on their mistakes. And I cannot tell you how much that speaks to your integrity. Glad to be here watching. . . . Side note, a good way to ensure your water is ok, just grab a printout of your areas EQC or Environmental Quality commission reports, not sure how it works outside the US, but here in Texas, we are sent one every 6 months. Unfortunately, my water, where i live, is right next to a coal burning energy plant, our water quality never passes inspection. We are warrned that the levels of arsenic can be detrimental to small animals, children, and elderly. So I only use it to wash dishes. I have to run several water filtration systems to be able to safely even shower in it. So, under rare rare circumstances, I definitely shouldn't wash my media in the tap. But i am a rare case for sure.

Good to see theae things get addressed. There are a lot of things people believe and repeat as fact that are wrong, or not entirely correct, but just get repeated and become part of the established knowledge. Often, when corrected with things like this, theres a "well, better safe than sorry" response that seems very reasonable but is IMHO dangerous. It leads to us fishkeepers not understanding what's going on in our aquariums, and potentially misdiagnosing problems.

Love the balanced update. I've lived in places where tap water chlorine fades your clothes and town council is proud of the fluorine they introduced 😳 So. Although Newcastle NSW has water sweet enough to drink straight, I'm okay with erring on the side of caution and using woofy water to wash off buildup and scuzz. Some days though I use the tap for extra water pressure to clean sponges and 'scape. Much of a muchness. Rest assured there is no harm done. People should be taking internet advice with a grain of salt anyway. But nothing you've shared so far constitutes badvice, _au contraire_ ! We remained impressed, on all sorts of levels, and this latest broadcast just took the respect level up another notch. Cheers to you 🇦🇺🙃👍

I knew that, but didn't want to nitpick. It doesn't harm your sponge rinsing it tank water, in fact I do it because it makes great water for my houseplants, they love it. Even though the science is right, I would bet that probably a lot of the web would still disagree regardless. Another thing that I do with 0 problems, is warm my replacement water with a mixture of hot and cold water from the tap, of course with prime added to it, to match the tank temperature. I have not lost a single fish, or more importantly shrimp due to what they say is a large concentration of copper. I'm not saying this is for everyone, do your own things, but it has worked for me now for well over 10 years.

To make it a little bit of a safer thing for any of my baby shrimps that are next to impossible to see I add a couple of drops of dechlorinator into 2 fish & shrimp only White buckets and then I temp match. Then setting the sponges in the 1st bucket I will be able to see with a magnifying glass and a torch if one or more wanted to see what I was doing. I swear I have had my head inside enough buckets rescuing " Invisible" shrimplets, but I have always been someone who truly loves nature amd every once in awhile I will do what needs to be because knock on wood I have only one casualty....This hobby is going to have plenty of opportunities to learn from others and the longer we have been around things usually have a few more ways to get the best results based on a lot of different variables and our own priority level's etc. Unfortunately I've got one example of why I will only use fine sponges since I had one shrimp that was unable to get back out after managing to get entangled. I have a HOB on that aquarium and in my attempts to lessen the flow for the floating plants I have a piece of driftwood positioned underneath and I placed the sponge on top .

Great video man! Ill say i clean my sponges like you, in the bucket of water that just came out of the aquarium. Most of the time anyhow. If its bad and the water in the bucket got totally messed up ill take the sponge to cold tap water and clean it then. I have always thought that this would kill the bacteria as well but thought that it wouldnt really matter as there was tons of it in the tank and it would repopulate the filter in no time flat. We all learn something new every day and this is a good one! Keep up the awesome work!

I've cleaned sponge media in hang on back filters under the tap, but I also know my water district doesn't use chloramine. That stuff is scary and I wouldn't want it in my tank. It is easier to run my little nano sponges in my hang on back tanks under the tap in my natural light tanks, because they get excessive string/ filament algae in the warm months. Trying to get all that stringy algae off the sponge is a pain if you're just dunking in a bucket. Much easier to run under the tap so I can easily pull the algae off. But it's just plain easier to squeeze your sponge filter sponges in the same bucket you just used to siphon water out of your tank, or the alternative, a bucket of dechlorinated tap water used for top offs. Good on you for putting this video out! Prime Time is a pretty interesting channel, though I don't watch all their videos as they're into big and aggressive fish that just don't interest me. ✌️

@FishKeepingAnswers hi, I am confused with some of the shrimp keepers on yt. They go to great pains to say how sensitive shrimp are and list all the the things that cause the shrimp to die, yet they make videos where they plunge in to tanks of shrimp scattering them around to pull out a few to say do a breeding experiment and just dump them into a totally different environment. Yes, the parameters may be the same or they may not but their behaviour with the shrimp totally contradict all their insistence on how sensitive these little creatures are. It seems like they can break their rules but you can’t else dead shrimp! Take care💕

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to get in touch. Here’s the odd thing. When you know what you’re doing, you can literally Chuck some shrimp in a tank and they will do well. Shrimp are incredibly hardy. With that said, so many new hobbyists really seem to struggle and kill shrimp over and over again. I guess we are all trying to give advice to get new hobbyists up to the point where they get their colonies thriving. 🫶🏻

@@FishKeepingAnswers hi, thanks; as you can probably tell I do study before trying new things especially when it’s living. I may be wrong but I wonder if perhaps the stress of being mailed, being in the dark, being bounce around in a small area, then coming out in to what could be bright sunlit day, would be very stressful and maybe the new hobbyist too excited, move the shrimp into bright light and a new area too quickly. No-one knows just when these little shrimp were placed in the box or how they were treated during their long (in some) cases journey. Take care💕

There are people that does not clean their sponges, because of the notion of not getting rid of the beneficial bacteria even in natural aquariums. So your older approach is NOT wrong! Cloramine will kill more beneficial bacterias than aquarium water!!!!

I mean, you gave advice which proves not to be accurate but you didn’t give advice which was harmful. If people only rinse in tank water it will do no harm to them so whilst the correction is appreciated i hope you don’t feel bad about it.

@FishKeepingAnswers hi, I have just watch your video saying you plop and drop your new shrimp. I am so please you said that. I am in the middle of setting up a small shrimp tank, in fact i messaged you and ask you about buying culls - I had been offered some at a reasonable price. However, I started to get a little concerned about all the videos saying how the shrimp die if you do this and not that etc. as you said in your video it seemed that shrimp yt creators wanted to make shrimp keeping as complicated as possible. That’s probably not the case but it was my perception. In the video you said you simple cut the bag open poured the shrimp into a net and put them into the tank. I assume you kept them in the bag till the temperature had equalised say 30 mins also? Thanks take care .

Even if your tap water killed bacteria, there are a million more bacteria where they came from in your entire aquarium 🤷🏽‍♂️ So let em die and repopulate within a few hours at worst?

that's how i felt about it, and if rinsing briefly under tap water were enough to kill off all the bacteria in a sponge - it'd also do a number on our mouths and throats drinking it
