I am. So glad. The algorithm took me to your shorts. I'm Addicted to learning everything you have to say. In Minnesota, we have a large Muslim community, yet, nobody outside the community is taught very much about the culture and especially the thing you're talking about. I also really love your marriage dynamic and conversation flo. Thanks for educating me.

Asian culture is the same!! My dad's Filipino and it's believed that anyone who's too dark is poor because it means they must have worked out in the rice fields all day long, and because of that thought process the thought is that they won't be able to get properly married because "you're too dark, nobody's gonna marry you!" As an American born and raised, it's nuts to me. I prefer getting a tan. We get me fun of for not being tan. Lol Speaking of Europeans, my mom's dad is half Irish and half Italian, the Italian in him wanted a tan! The darker the better!! Crisp, golden brown 👌😆 It's all wild to me, but Americans don't like being white. We want to not look like a ghost 💀💀💀💀

Here in Ireland everyone wants to be as dark as possible! We spend a fortune on fake tans all year round! And the biggest compliment you can get from someone when coming back from a vacation is “omg you look black!”. The biggest insult is saying “omg you’re bán” (which is white in Irish)

I'm white (European) and I hate tanning. I always use 50+ SPF filters and try to cover my arms from sun. I've noticed it's rather unusual here, most people will lie in the sun to get as brown as possible, even risking sunburn.

I am about as pasty-white as they come & I literally do not tan- my skin just refuses. The most I will get (besides a sunburn) is a very freckled & maybe light golden tan that's mostly unnoticeable. lol But I embrace it. I am very pale & I like it.

Your hubby needs sunscreen! He’s very white and so am I! Lol! I just burn peel and fade. I’m 62,so I stopped years ago to get some colour in the summer. You have a lot less wrinkles too if you stay out of the sun. I would think you’d be looking for shade all bundled up like that! Aren’t you hot?😮

This goes way back in cultural context. Many Asian cultures going way back in time believed that well-off and high-ranking young women stayed home and were rarely seen outside. The lack of being out in the sun kept their skin pale and became a status symbol as women who had to work outside in the sun had darker skin. The same could be said in regards to the old Chinese custom of binding feet. Women with unbound feet were considered lower class and less beautiful. Now, in the West, it became popular both in Europe as well as the US and Canada to vacation somewhere warm like the south of France, Italy, Greece, and in the Americas, the Caribbean. In order to do so, you had to be able to assume the high cost of travel and accommodation. So in the West, it became a status symbol to show off your tan as evidence you could afford a lavish vacation somewhere warm while less well-off families had to stay put in the winter where there was less sun and the temperature was too cold to wear fewer layers or get a tan.

I prefer not incurring UV damage and not defining beauty according to what's considered "upper class". Pale skin is not indicative of wealth, and tanning from the sun is not a "healthy glow".

As a white, blue eyed central European my family always made fun of me for being pale. Calling me cheese-colored, comparing me to my naturally tan sister, telling me I look sick. Goes to show its a ton of bs. As an adult I really embrace my skin color and whenever people tell me to tan I tell them I don't want to look like a wrinkly leather glove as an old lady. And when they tell me they tanned their whole life and don't look like a wrinkly leather glove I give them a silent amused look.

Medhina, salaam, you are so right! Many people from India and Pakistani have such colonized views about skin tone. Despite Islam supposedly doing away with race and creed. Allah (SWT) created many hues and tones and all are beautiful. And if His (SWT) sun enhances that beauty, appreciate it. Don’t regret it
@harlowesadventuresinwonder1564
@harlowesadventuresinwonder1564 Жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with colonization at all. It is a cultural context that pre-existed colonization all over Asia. Back several hundreds of years, upper-class Asians, especially women, seldom left their homes as it was culturally unacceptable. So they didn't tan, and it became a status and beauty symbol as those who had to work in the fields got tanned from their labor. So that was seen as base and not beautiful. Having wealthy European women around just further reinforced an already existing construct, The opposite is true in the West because tans became a status symbol that m eant that they had enough wealth to afford the cost of an expensive trip to an exotic and warm location in the winter. So beauty and status norms prized tan skin. Different cultures have different ideas of what gives a person status. It doesn't mean I think what happened with colonialism was OK or didn't involve racist ideology because it certainly did, but the case of the origins of tan vs no tan was already well established before colonialism arrived.
