My dad learned this the hard way. Though, to be fair, there had been no thunder or lightning near him prior to it happening. He was washing out a cement pump truck and lightning struck the puddle of water he was standing in next to his truck. It wasn’t raining, just overcast. It blew him off his feet back about 10-15 feet and it blew the tips of some of his fingertips off from the water hose he was holding.

I was definitely always told to not be out in OPEN water during a storm. I honestly figured all those trees would have most likely taken the hit instead. Maybe this is just that one in a million time, but more likely I need to adjust this particular life rule.

@letabouret1487
@letabouret1487 3 ай бұрын
no its not becose of that. electricity wants to go into the ground by the path of least resistance to complete the circuit so if its already in the water it has no reason to make a detour trough a person's body. the reason its dangerous to be on water when there is lightning strikes is that that it tends to hit the tallest thing availible and water is very flat so when you are standing in water or even just having your head above the water makes you very likely to become the path of least resistance for the arc to form. forrest did not get hit directly by the arc itself otherwise there would be burns on him but it was close enough that the electricity traveled trough the air to shock him and his crew. the same thing could have happened in without the water.
@letabouret1487
@letabouret1487 3 ай бұрын
i see you dont know shit about lightning. you dont need to be hit by the arc itself to be struck by lightning and get a massive eletric shock and possibly even die. the visible arc is the center of the area but people get shocked in a big circle around that point becose the electricity can travel trough air without being visible. we can see in the reaction that he AND HIS CREW ON LAND very clearly recieved an electric shock. electricity wants to take the path of least resistance towards the ground. if the lighting had hit the water he would have got no shock becose it would have been a detour for the electricity to go shock him instead of going straight form the water to the ground under it. we can clearly see the tree like 10 feet behind him do some sparks becose thats where the arc initialy landed and thats very clearly close enough for ALOT of electricity to flow trough him and his crew. people sometimes die from heart attacks just from the shock he got there. if he was over 60 that would have been a moment to rush him to the hospital even if he felt fine becose sometimes the heart damage can take time to start taking effect

My roommates an electrician and got shocked at work. He said he felt it go through his chest and it hurt, but he was fine. He told me this when he got home at like 7pm. At 1am he knocks on my bedroom door and can barely breath. I had to drive him to the emergency room. Apparently although the electricity didn’t have an immediate effect, all his chest muscles started swelling up hours later and were pressing on his lungs making it more and more difficult to breathe. So apparently even if you don’t get an irregular heartbeat, electricity can do some delayed damage

Lightning does take a direct path to ground, yes. Electricity will look for the quickest way to ground, yes. But as an electrician I know that even with things grounded, if you touch something live there will always be a small current of electrons traveling the path that you create with your body if you touch something. ~90% of the electrons will go to ground but there's always gonna be a small percentage that decide randomly to take different paths if given the chance so it makes sense why he felt this flash through the water because not all of it will go straight to ground.

People say that electrical power takes “the path of least resistance,” but the truth is that if there’s multiple paths for it to follow, it splits up and each path gets a share of the current that depends on its resistance relative to the other paths. I got struck. I pregnant with my first baby and there was a storm in Moses Lake, WA. I lived in Ellensburg (72 miles by freeway but I’m not sure how far as the crow flies) and my friend and I were out watching the storm taking pictures with my new camera. There were no clouds over us. Suddenly we hear a crack see a flash and my body just jerks open. Like I was doing a jumping jack. My fingertip reached out and tapped my friend on the shoulder and she flew into the ditch and my opposite foot touched my dog (flip flops) he screamed and flipped down the street a couple of times. For days after I could have pain and my body would jerk and spasm and my heart would go into a funny rhythm and they would have to help it beat properly again at the ER. It was NOT the most fun thing ever. My son is 11 and doing good though. I now suffer seizures and we wonder whether it’s related.

As someone who worked as an electrical engineer, specifically for earthing, I have to say that's not always the case. It depends how far away you are from the lightning. If you're close then it's safer, because there's less step potential (birds on a wire thing), but if you're far then it's less safe because now it'll reach you when it previously wouldn't.
@arhodehamel2615
@arhodehamel2615 8 ай бұрын
You need to be a bridge between two different potentials to be in danger. If you’re in a lake that gets struck you should be ok but if your In the lake and leaning against a metal ground rod or get directly hit because your the tallest thing around yea you will become the path of least resistance. Electrons follow all paths back to the source. You just don’t want to be the path of least resistance because that’s where most of the electrons are gonna go. For example, you could be in a pool that is charged and be OK but as soon as you step out of the pool and touch something with a different potential, you are in trouble.

When lightning hits a large body of water, the electricity does not usually penetrate deep into the water, but disperses in all directions favoring the surface. The distance that the electricity travels depends on the intensity of the lightning and the conductivity of the water. Generally, a strike will dissipate within 20 feet (6 metres), but it could easily go further. Within 20 feet, lightning could be lethal to any living creature in the water, including gators. Outside 20 feet, the sound level in the water is probably the biggest danger, as lightning strikes generate up to 260 dB at 1 metre in the water, which can cause hearing loss or even death. So, if a water body full of gators is hit by lightning, some of them might die or get injured, depending on how close they are to the point of impact and how strong the lightning is. However, this is not a very common occurrence, as most gators live in freshwater habitats that have lower conductivity than saltwater². Also, gators have thick skin and scales that might offer some protection from electric shocks.

My brother, two cousins and I got indirectly struck by lightning like this while playing in the rain. 30 minutes later we went home and we all started to get headaches , fevers, our eyes started to hurt and our ears were ringing and in pain. I know for a fact, this guy was feeling it a short time after this clip was taken. Especially seeing that he was even closer to the lightning bolt then I ever was.

I got hit by lightning a few years ago. Hit my hand. Totally fine that day. Next day, from palm to palm, bottom of ribcage to my jaw was so sore I could hardly breathe. The spot it hit has an odd dip in the muscle, and I was told it was probably slightly melted. Doctor said it should have killed me, and to not step outside barefoot during a storm, no matter what got left on the porch. You're at an increased risk of getting struck again, apparently. Hope the next day wasn't too painful.

@@snjert8406 I'm not sure, and I've had a lot of people with knowledge of such things say that. One was some sort of physicist and said it involved something it does to the alignment and interactions of electrons in, on, and around the body. @@froginprogress8510 after 20 mins of google search, aparently that is a bs myth that associates ligthings with magical properties such as electrons alignments. That is not truth. The myth surge after many stories of people getting hit multiple times in their lives, wich is really surprising given how rare it is to get hit by one. The reality is that those people always have jobs or somethig that really exposes them to thunderstorms and after getting hit, they keep doing the same job over an over again, and get hit again. And again. Like this guy. The electron aligment thing is very similar to a real physics phenomenon called magnetism, the aligment of the magnetic field of the atoms in a material give the general object magnetic properties. Some metals come by default with this aligment, and can lose it and given back with the appropiate tools, such as a de-magnetizer, wich can mess up the aligment of the atoms to make them cancel each other. I dont know how a lightning can affect a human magnetism, or how can mangetism atract lightnings, or if humans can be magnetic at all. That sounds like a 2 hour google search, and no thank you.

The hair on my arms kept standing up long after. I was burnt where my body was touching the unit. I passed out briefly. I had arrhythmia, lesions on my brain. Singes on my clothes. Yet I wasn't directly hit, I was sitting on the huge air conditioner that was hit. My siblings and I were hiking on top of a mountain with our two dogs; a thunderstorm unexpectedly moved through the area, but we were too far from the car and didn't want to make a run for it, especially since the car was parked in a clearing on the top of the mountain. So, we ran through the trail, looking for a building to shelter under, but could not find one; the wind was really bad, it was hailing, the thunder was insanely loud, and the lightning was really close. We eventually took shelter under a rock and huddled together to wait it out; lightning struck a tree nearby, the sound was deafening, but we were not hit. Then, a few minutes later, lightning hit either another tree or the ground nearby, and the ground current hit us, moving down each of us, as we were huddled together. It didn't hurt, but I felt and heard the jolt move through my body. We were all just fine; no temporary or permanent loss of hearing, no pain, and no scars or arrhythmias. I'll never not seek shelter during a thunderstorm ever again; that was the most terrifying moment of my life. I genuinely thought we were going to die after being struck, but luckily, we were not struck again and the storm passed. As soon as you see lightning, head for cover and don't wait; you never think it'll happen to you until it does.

I was in that exact situation last year, nut luckily didn't get hit. I had hiked for hours tryung to get to the top, then the second I arrived a thunderstorm appeared. I headed back at a normal pace, but the thunderstorm got close very, very wuickly and before I knew it I was in teh middle of it. I think I ran for 2 hours straight, when usually I'm out of breath in about 4 minutes, I had that much adrenaline pumping through my body. I headed for the tree line first thinking I'd feel safer than all exposed on the top, but as I was running there and trees were being hit I feared for my life even more. At some point there was a lightning strike LITERALLY every 2 seconds right freakin above me. I thought I was going to die for sure. Then I rounded a corner, and the rain was gone, the wind was gone. I kept running fir half an hour until I found a building to hide under. Somehow the thunderstorm stayed in place in that one valley all night (had to camp out there!), lightning every few seconds, and I had had the poor luck to be right in it. So weird looking at that storm for hours, not seeing it move. I am very aware I could have died that night. NEVER go into the mountains when there's even the slightest chance of a thunderstorm! They'll catch you by surprise and up in the mountains they're SO much more dangerous than down in the valley, they're really on another level
