It all started when my mom met my dad and they fell in love and they had me, Hi im Adam Ryan, and my life.. is kinda crazy!! I bought a Leer cap back in 2000 for my 2001 Dodge Ram. Looks great still. Bought a 2016 Ford F-250 in 2015. Ordered a Leer Cap for it. Had to send the filler door to them to match the paint color. They said Ford wouldn't give them the formula. After the local Leer dealer installed it I noticed the latch striker loop was loose on bothsides. They used 1/2 inch self drilling screws to attach them into one layer of Fibreglass. They were falling out. Piss poor work. Now the clear coat is peeling off. Last Leer cap I'll ever buy.

Looks great! Personal experience talking here. Adjust the strikers for the rear window so tight that you push on it in order to latch it. It may make it so you also need to push on the glass for opening it as well. But unless the glass is truly compressing the seals a bit it’s gonna leak & definitely make the cargo area a dust trap on dirt roads. I’ve also gone as far putting weather stripping on for the tailgate gaps. Not much is as frustrating as getting somewhere & finding the gear that your expecting clean is filthy. Especially if it’s stuff like sleeping bags or pillows.

Really, 6 hours for that cap install. No carpet, long install and door not adjusted. That would have bugged the hell out of me too. The older I get, the shorter the fuse. Nice looking truck. Needs a splash of color.

I know this is an old video. But it was the installers fault too. They should have not installed it realizing the order was incomplete. If it were me, I would have made them take it off and get me what I ordered, lol. I appreciate how positive and thoughtful you are. Mostly, I love how you gave the Lord thanks.

Bro, first off, nice truck and good video. I have the same truck, same model, Texas edition LTZ, but in black. Last week I got a quote for a brand new new Leer cap. $3500, 6-8 week wait. I couldn’t wait. I found a used one in gray, no rails, but has all the bells and whistles. Same rear window as yours, same slider sides, has slider front window, and carpeted. Excellent condition for $450! It took me 10 minutes to install it. Yes, 10 minutes. I don’t have any of the issues you had with yours. I spent another couple hours installing 12v outlet, usb’s, battery meter, switch to turn all the above off, and built a tool organizer for the bed and rails. So in just a couple hours, I have a loaded and ready to roll truck. How could they spend all day and not have that thing perfect? Because… they spent ten minutes or less on the install once they got it out of the crate. The lack of carpeting… that’s on LEER. I’d be pissed. I can hang hooks, Velcro, you name it. Plus it’s quiet and insulated for the dogs.

Dude I’m seeing this 2 years after the fact and I’m mad for you hahah the dealership should of noticed that it was missing carpet as soon as they got it! Then they spend 6 hours in it and they still didn’t notice it was missing carpet! Awesome that you stayed positive but they definitely should of gave you more money and paid to send it back to get that carpet put in once you got back from your trip. Hope you had an awesome trip thanks for the warning about leers shitty quality control

Well, you now the opportunity to insulate the entire shell with Reflectics and then apply the carpet. Win win. Speaker carpet is easily installed and looks good and hides seams. Enjoy.

I had an A.R.E. V Series truck cap for my Ram 1500 ordered at the beginning of February and it took just under 4 weeks to come in. Had to wait for 2 weeks after it came in to have it installed and luckily for me it only took them 1 hour to install it and I made sure mine had the carpet headliner and the tilt down sliding front window I wanted with it before I left. It’s only been on for 3 days now and I love it alot more than the UnderCover Elite hinged tonneau cover that was on my truck before I ever got my cap.

@@ia6980 Personally, I’d go with the V Series just because of the fully color matched cap as opposed to having a partial color match and partial spray on liner cap. In my opinion it looks alot better that way.

i got a LEER on my 17 sierra had it paint matched, bug screens, carpet, power outlet. They had to adjust the window clips two times but got it done, have not had any problems with it since then. It looks great on your truck bro!!!!! go have the carpet done by an upholstery shop maybe? it make s a big difference with the sound and condensation. damn your truck looks nice!

I shell and install camper shells. It generally takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours to install camper shells. I had that same problem about the camper shell not coming with the headliner. We had to install the headliner on the shell. It is possible to install the headliner after it comes in. It takes hours to installer the headliner correctly after it has been painted. Maybe, that is why they told you it could not be installed.

Somehow I'm not surprised, I ordered my first Leer in the early 200s from an authorized dealer/installer who promptly ordered the wrong size cap for my truck. After trying to fit a longer and wider cap on my bed they realized they'd made a huge mistake when ordering, of course now I had to wait for a new cap to be made,cured,and shipped halfway acrossed the country. Of course it didnt come in pristine. If i hadn't needed it so badly, i might not have accepted their second attempt. I still had to adjust the installation for the same reason as you.

Dude, you just built a bass boat, and will be putting foam on that boat, you also did a great job with the carpet on the original jon boat build, my guess is that you could do just as good a job, putting carpet on your topper. It looks awesome, but don't sell yourself short. The truck looks great.

Sucks about the liner in the cap man! But I'm sure you could make something work to put on that, maybe some of the type of foam you are putting in the jon boat? Would be pretty badass to match the interior of the boat

6 hours? I installed my cap on my dodge ram long bed by myself and wired it up in 45 minutes I had to use ratchet straps and cherry picker to lift it up since I did it by myself. I’m sure a shop they had 2-4 people just lift it up lol. What did they do for 6 hours?

Yep. IMO, my Dealer screwed up by not verifying the canopy against the order when it came in. They should have seen the missing carpet, sent it back and had it fixed. The customer would not have even known. (mine came missing the carpet also).

I ordered my Leer and got it installed then realized it did not have the cloths hanger I ordered and paid for. So I got a refund plus a little more for the trouble. I would of been sending it back if mine didn’t come with carpet though.

I had a very similar experience with a Canadian purchase of a leer CAP. The company acknowledged issues with their substandard cap/electronics' quality. AND had no interest in correcting or customer disatisfaction. My cap now reflects this poor quality with vinyl lettering across their "LEER" logo on the rear glass: "Don't buy" LEER "these caps suck!" People are interested in WHY this is so!

a white shell and they didn't just let you use it and swap it when the remake came in? I'm a small market dealer and that would have been how I would have handled it. Something else was going on if it took six hours, even if you had keyless entry.

I put an ARE on my Tacoma. It's not bad at all. I bought some special rounded weather strip and sealed up all the gaps in the back of it. I stealth camp in my taco.

this has me wondering about returns. i would want to see the shell BEFORE it goes on my truck to make sure it looks ok, and is what i ordered. no headliner would have been a deal breaker for me.

Seems nuts they called him in to install it onto the truck, order in hand with the carpet on the order, and did not simply tell him there was a mistake on the order. I was as active as I could be when the shop called me in to pick up my camper shell. I watched them unwrap it, and clean the dust off it. I paid 2400 for my ARE with carpet in it, and no windows on the sides, but doors that open upward with struts. I stealth camp in my camper shell on long trips. They didn't put carpet on the insides of the doors though, and that turned out to be an issue with condensation from my breathing while I sleep when it is freezing outside.

I absolutely hate trying to get last minute work done to your vehicle before a long trip. Last time that happened to me I had just PCSd to a new base in Colorado from South Korea. I needed two new front tires on my car to drive back to Cali for Christmas. BigO Tires replaced the rear tires which where almost brand new instead of my bald front tires. Had made an appointment for 2:30 pm for my wife to take the car in while I was at work. They didn’t start until 6:30 pm and we didn’t notice the mistake until the next day an hour before leaving and of course by that time they had thrown my tires away. I ended up risking it and making the 23hr drive anyway with my family. I was extremely nervous and pissed off once we reached donner pass at the Nevada/California boarded because it was covered in snow and my snow chains were broken. Don’t worry about the carpet. I’m sure you and the rest of the tin can crew can figure something out that looks better than factory.

It is not Leer's fault. The dealer should have never put it on if it did not match the order. They tried to slide it past you. Bad dealer. My bet is the dealer ordered it wrong and is now blaming Leer. You cannot trust what it says on the receipt. Somebody had to order it on a form online and they screwed up. First the dealer ordered it wrong, then made you wait 6 hours, then made you drive back to the dealer. What a horrible dealer.

That would be annoying, I can't for the life of me understand why that took them 6 hours to do. And after all of that they didn't even have the latches adjusted so it closed and sealed properly. I'm also shocked they didn't check to make sure your order matched what they were installing before doing it. Hopefully your trip went well after that nonsense, xD

My last two ARE caps (5 years apart) have been similar ... both leak around windows. The factory workers who install their windows over-tighten the fasteners, crushing and distorting the window frames so they don't seal. The first one I bought new, so the windows got redone. My current one is used, so I'm probably going to fix it myself. Good designs + bad assembly = bad product. I'd rather they sell me the parts and let me put it together. Then it wouldn't leak.

@@paulrybarczyk5013 I moved away or I’d have had them fix it. I went to a Leer dealer in a different state and they sprayed it with water and it didn’t leak everywhere so basically called me a liar. But it leaks constantly in the rain. Very disappointing!

Man that absolutely SUCKS, I can't imagine how you feel expecting one thing and getting another. I would refuse the whole thing and ask for my money back. It wasn't your fault. you have a right to get what you pay for and NOT what they decided to give you. That is straight up Bullshit. Both leer and the outfit that installed the cap are at fault. That is gross. The refund ain't good enough. You need to slap both companies with a Bad revue.
