Hello friends & welcome to my scalp! In this episode, I try something I've been wanting to try for literal months - a professional scalp exfoliation!! As some of you may know, I do like to delve into different algorithmic rabbit holes on good ole' KZfaq, and recently, KZfaq has been showing me a lot of ASMR Head Spa videos, where ASMRtists get their scalps professionally cleaned to unclog their hair follicles and promote healthy hair & regrowth. And so, I decided to venture to the Blow Me Away Salon in LA to get a Japanese Head Spa treatment, and finally give my head the spa day it deserves. What do you guys think? Would you try something like this?
Apologies if my scalp is too disturbing, lol.
Also - just a heads up, there are other contributing factors to dandruff besides just dirty scalp - I think in my case, I just have a lot of buildup, and Arisa zeroed in on that in relation to my particular head. Also also - in terms of maintaining your scalp care at home, Arisa just mentioned using specific scalp cleansing products & serums about once a week!
Also also - I noticed that some of you guys are skeptical about some of the ingredients of the products & the treatment as a whole - totally fair for you guys to have criticisms about it, I wasn't trying to vouch for every individual ingredient, or for how effective this would be for everybody - I personally enjoyed it, and I just thought it would be interesting to know what they say are the active ingredients. I'll be sure to keep your thoughts in mind for next time we make a video in this arena.

They aren't gonna say "Oh yeah it looks great! You really don't need this therapy, here's your money back!" The beauty industry thrives on people's insecurities. Now they are capitalizing on people's scalps. I know everybody's gotta make the rent, but I really don't think people need this unless they have severe dandruff and oil issues. In general though I'm sure most of us including Safiya don't need to spend money on this. Makes for a great video though.

Saf's scalp from the before images were normal. She isn't experiencing hair loss at all from those photos. You will notice hair loss when the majority of hair pores only have 1-2 stands of hair. She had a healthy mix of 2-3 and 1-2s. Also most of the time single strand hairs are because of growth, more hair will eventually grow in those pores. In regards to her scalp, yes there a bit of build up, but that's normal and can be tackled with a clarifying shampoo or just cleansing your hair 2-3 times in the shower especially if you only wash your hair a few times a week. Also dandruff is a fungal infection. Which can be indicated my little yellow balls or clumps on the scalp. Most people mistake dandruff to just flakes which is normal. If you do have dandruff you need a treatment shampoo that is normally given by a dermatologist or specialty brand. That shampoo is often pH balancing which will help tackle the fungal infection and keep it at bay whislt keeping your scalp and hair clean and healthy. I wish I could make a video reply to his because I did study how the scalp and hair works and a lot of the information provided to her was a bit misleading. I don't want to discredit the salon, but this "treatment" can be done at home. If anything just changing your routine a little will do wonders for your hair and scalp. I always tell clients to treat your scalp and hair the same way you would treat your face, lashes, and brows. Use a gentle cleansing shampoo 1-2 times depending on hair wash cycle. Condition or use a mask at the end and what ever SMALL amount you have left gently massage onto the scalp just to bring moisture back to you scalp. *Think of your scalp as an extension of your face.* Make sure to thoroughly rinse out all the products and try to wash your hair with cold to luke warm water. Hot water will strip your hair and scalp of all its natural oils leaving your scalp raw, red, and dry. If you must shower hot, do a a few minutes of a cold burst of water to relax the scalp. Post shower you can apply you leave in conditioner to the ends of hair and a little on the scalp and just blow dry or air dry per usual. Of course getting this treatment is nice and done, but at the end of the day speak to a dermatologist if you are concerned with any dandruff or hair loss. Hair loss is contributed to many factors but mostly genetics and hormonal issues. A dirty scalp rarely contributes to hair loss/thinning. Will it stunt hair growth? Possibly, but not stop it all together. Hair loss is mostly based of DNA and genetics. The biggest indicator or hair loss and thinning is concerning amount of hair fall out during showers or your pony tails or buns over time have significantly been getting thinner or lighter.

I cannot express how absurdly in favor of Spa Husband I am. Not only does Tyler deserve it, but only good things can come from showing that spa treatments aren't just for women, but for ALL people! Seriously. Mani/pedi, facials, body wraps, skin treatments, massages, hydrotubs, all these things can be incredibly beneficial to ANY man, woman, or other. It's not just a girly girl thing! I've always been here for Safiya's dancing and eyebrow waggles (yes, that is why I am here, specifically). But I find that pampering Tyler pleases me very greatly as well. MOAR PLZ.

Agreed I wish men taking care of themselves was more normalized. I hate that everything labeled "men" when it comes to beauty products of any kind are all like gross "musk" smells and usually combining multiple things.. like they have "Men's body wash" but it's also shampoo and conditioner and just smells like musk.. lol I, as a man, have wanted to do things like you listed and now even this, but always feel weird doing it because of how people react to it. I've had professionals even tell me it's weird and I'm just like "No, you're just a horrible human for thinking it's weird." It's hard enough normalizing men having long hair even though that's at least making progress.
@AraRaven
@AraRaven 2 жыл бұрын
@@oliviaaugust5744 Huh, I never thought of it that way lol. That's just how I talk about people in general. I think everyone deserves pampering, and I'm very pleased to see people engaging in such self care, regardless of whether they are married to someone or not. Then again, almost all my friends are men, most of them are in relationships with women other than me, and I'll talk this way about them, so it might just be a 'me' thing. 😆

I totally get the criticism, but it seems to me the hair spa is the same as any facial you can get at a spa. They're treatments you can do at home and for much cheaper and its never something you NEED to do or especially spend a lot of money on, BUT you still get results and if you like the luxury and the spa experience then there's nothing wrong with it.

I would love to get this done because it looks relaxing but I can't get over how the woman talks to Safiya. A lot of what she was saying sounded to me like she's trying to make her feel bad or scare her into getting more treatments etc. Also dandruff is not caused from a dirty scalp like she said.
@BrandonL_00

Now that you mention it, there's this thing that hair stylists do to scare you. They get a section of your hair and use scissors to scrape up and down, revealing a buildup that supposedly your store bought shampoo/conditioner has caused. They say that the ones they sell at that salon will remove the buildup. This wax buildup is perfectly natural for hair to have. This is just a tactic for the stylist can trick customers to sell their products. I think they call it the scrape/wax test. Just putting this out there.

As another poc I'm really interested in trying this. I generally have my giant afro in protective styles for 2 weeks plus at a time so this would be nice to do since all the protective products do build up significantly. One this that's big in black culture (or used to be) was the sitting together and washing braiding and style of each other's hair that happens within the community. This kinda reminds me of that, in a way.

I mean, yeah, THIS is a scam, but like, scalp buildup from product really isn't. I know because it happens to me (curly hair). But you can usually just use a clarifying shampoo every so often and give your scalp a good scrub to keep it in check. Otherwise your scalp gets super gross and itchy and you come away with gunk under your fingernails.

Hair spa is becoming weirdly popular among young people in Vietnam too, but it's called meditating hair wash. I resisted it at first thinking it's a scam but once I went, I got ADDICTED, I go once maybe twice a month now. Not only we get a wash like in the video, we got neck and shoulder massages and facial too, it is really relaxing. I think it became popular with young people because we are a generation that listen to our mental and physical needs, and promotes self-care. If you got a chance, highly recommend this

I would love to hear a dermatologists opinion about this. Nothing wrong with enjoying getting pampered, but it's important to not take advertisement as factual. As far as I know not washing your hair for a few days is better for the scalp than washing it everyday and it's nothing to be disgusted by. So many normal body related things are demonised by the beauty industry to make money and the resulting indoctrination is quite damaging to people's relationships with their bodies and selfworth. A small science based section for those kind of videos would be nice to balance things out. I am, however, absolutely in favour of both of you trying spa treatments for videos as spa spouses, pampering is for everyone to enjoy

"As far as I know not washing your hair for a few days is better for the scalp than washing it everyday" This actually depends a lot on the person's scalp and how much oil it produces. If you produce a lot of oil, you really should wash at least 3-4 times a week but daily is good too, you just need to use a gentle shampoo. "Training your hair" to produce less oil is a myth. It didn't become a big thing until dry shampoos hit the market and I feel like it's been perpetuated by the beauty industry just as much as any other beauty trend. Article with info from a trichologist (someone who studies hair and the scalp): www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-wash-your-hair-every-day-2018-1 Study titled "The Impact of Shampoo Wash Frequency on Scalp and Hair Conditions": pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34055906/

I'd be really curious to see what a good clarifying shampoo could do, with the microscope. My instinct is that mechanical cleaning (scrubbing) and a shampoo designed to cut buildup could produce the same results, for much cheaper! To me, the before shots just look like hair that's not been washed for a day or so - of course your scalp will be a bit shiny and oily! The human body tends to look a bit gross under a microscope, and I feel like this treatment is capitalising on that. Not saying that it's not a pleasant, luxurious experience or that it didn't clean your scalp! But just that this might not be the only way to achieve it.

Seems gimmicky. It is good to deep clean your scalp once in a while but many of those products used, won't have an effect if used only once and stay only a few minutes on your hair. What really cleans the hair is the shampoo and the deep massage that dislodges the gunk off the scalp, no real need for the other stuff.

After watching this, I went and bought a silicone scalp massager, and I added rubbing plain lotion into my scalp as a first step after wetting my hair in the shower. So I massage the lotion on, rinse, shampoo, massage, rinse, use my dandruff shampoo, massage, rinse, condition everywhere. While conditioner is on, I was and shave and all that fun stuff. My scalp feels better, my hair stays cleaner longer, it's thicker and growing back and is way curlier and less frizzy than it was. I do a 'sailor shower' and only run the water as I need it, because this is 30 minutes easy. But I only do it once a week, because my hair looks and feels cleaner longer, even with a little product in. Thank you. I would never have thought of 'cold cream' on my scalp or that a massage was important without this video.

Okay so while I think this lady did a terrific job and there was clearly a bit of build up, the initial consultation seemed very fear mongering. Like a lot of that “build up” just looked like standard sebum on the scalp. I’d love if you went again, if you compared your freshly washed scalp as the before to see if any of their treatments clean deeper than standard shampoo. It ultimately felt like they were convincing you that you had to come back or you’ll lose your hair faster. This video was so good though and loved the ASMR segments. Just a note about the little hairs on top, the thickness can be impacted by the growing cycle. We are constantly shedding and growing hair. @@Lukelaluke123 I’ve gone to this spa, but saying meds “simulate circulation”? What? Most hair loss medications prevent DHT and are hormonal meds. You didn’t even google what causes hair loss, and that has to be the most lacking understanding of information thing regarding medication i’ve ever heard. People learned about circulation and now they just throw that word in anywhere. Tyler is most likely experiencing hair loss because of high dHT and only a finasteride would stop that. If not, everybody experiencing hair loss should first get their thyroid and Vitamin D levels checked in a blood test. Saaf just has low hair density. I don’t know why you would assume that meds “stimulate circulation” when that’s literally impossible other than you heard it as a buzzword used my ever esthetician and masseuse. Circulation is good to reduce stress, but that’s not going to do anything if you literally have testosterone levels that are too high, which is what most hair loss meds tackle

Just an fyi, if you have thinning hair, it probably IS NOT thinning because you're not washing it enough or using some kind of treatments. It's usually hormones, genes, age or some kind of medical condition/deficiency you have or even manual stress because you're too harsh for your hair. You can go to a head spa for relaxation and treating yourself but don't feel like you NEED this for scalp and hair health. Massages and treatments are ofc beneficial but not mandatory. I know they need to sell this treatment so they get you to come back but I feel like there was a lot of misinformation here. Still enjoyed the video, like every Saf vid.

I was inspired by Safiya to try using a scalp scrub myself except it was at home as I don't believe this salon treatment is available near me. I used some from Amazon and etsy as I personally really love natural/homemade products. I really loved how clean and shiny my scalp was afterwards. I have an oily scalp but it seems to be much less so now. I definitely recommend to try using scalp scrubs to anyone. A hair steamer/mist is also good for non wash days, I've heard that people with curly hair use them to help hydrate and keep hair bouncy.

Okay, that "buildup" wasn't dirt. It was oil from your scalp called sebum. Sebum is actually good for your hair, it moisturizes it and helps it grow. Heck, channels that focus on kinky hair suggest massaging your scalp to get MORE sebum production and to move it further down the hair shaft. It would be different if you were putting powered foundation over your parts in your wig, used a lot of styling products, or hadn't washed your hair in several months, but you haven't don'e those things, so having that layer of "buildup" is normal and HEALTHY for your scalp and hair

While true, it's still unhealthy to let sebum take control if you're oily like she is. Overproduction of sebum clogs pores and can cause irritation, just like getting acne on your face. Not saying all of that cleansing was necessary but frequent cleansing is still important for oily types of people nonetheless.

While I agree the buildup looked crazy, it’s actually what protects your hair. Stripping your hair of the essential oils and fatty acids it needs to grow keratin can be very damaging. To be honest, it looks amazing… but I don’t think there is a lot of science behind her claims. Hair loss IS normal, especially as we age!! As someone who works in dermatology, I know that at any given time, women is losing 1/3 of their hair, while 1/3 remains static, and the last 1/3 is growing. Second, no matter what you wash your hair with, expensive or not, you WILL have build up. Build up is the natural oils, sebum, skin flakes and leftover products in your hair. Buildup is inevitable. Something as cheap as a silicone shampoo brush can help with build up. Dandruff is NOT always from build up. People can suffer from things such as Psoriasis, Eczema, sunburns that lead to peeling, and honestly just a dry scalp, although build up can be a factor. Lastly your hair washing regimen should be personal to you. If you wash your hair daily because you get oily, great! If you can go several days without washing your hair, that is also great. It’s personal. You cannot tell someone how often to wash their hair unless you are a professional and there is a problem with the current regimen. I would warn women and men alike to not take the advise of someone who has a service or product to offer. They will tell you what they want to hear. Consult your dermatologist before making decisions. And saf, your scalp WAS NOT in dire situation!! Love you tho!!

This was fun to watch, but I’d be curious to see how your scalp looked after you washed it yourself vs what they did. To me, it’s not really accurate when you come in with hair unwashed, because you will see oil/sebum if you have an oily scalp. Second, baby hairs are just that-regrowth-not necessarily thinning hair. Unless she is a licensed trichologist, I would not worry too much. I watched someone else do this on KZfaq and it was interesting, but I still think it’s something you can do for yourself for a fraction of the cost, and see the same results.

There's definitely nothing here you can't do at home, but that can be said for everything. You could easily go get the ingredients and make your own bread at home, do you? Again this could be said for everything. All spa activities could be done at home, but there's something about being pampered that makes it much better. As for seeing the scalp after she washed it.. that's literally what you saw in the before shots. She washed it the day before and it's not recommended to wash your hair daily anyway. The only thing I'd say is skewing the results is the fact they showed a dry scalp before and a wet scalp after. With all the moisture from the treatment the skin would have swelled up. So that could be why it's more smooth. However, you can't deny the change in Saf's pores. They're definitely much more open with the treatment. I'd have liked another go over after the blow out to see the dry scalp now.
