Hi Alex, what I heard and witnessed from older drivers is to use kitty litter ( clay formula) and bleach. You put the kitty litter like you did with the salt/ ice melt compound, then you pour the bleach over the tire then pull out slowly. Apparently the bleach and the clay litter will get sticky and you'll be able to get unstuck. It happened to a driver in Missouri truck stop, he wanted us to help him pull out with a chain, but my friend driver said we should do that so we won't be liable for any damages that might occur. But he got out the kitty litter and bleach and "Presto", it worked. Give it a try next time. Great job on your videos.

Yep, got stuck 2 days ago in a mix of mud and snow. On one side the mud was half-way up the tire, so I decided to put chains on the drive tires and rocked it back and forth. All tow trucks were busy cleaning up a wreck and I didn't want to wait another 3 house waiting to be rescued. I personally don't drive if I have to out chains on, but knowing how to out them on without moving the truck is PRICELESS.

1st rule parking on ice is making sure your tires are cool before you set the brake. drive a head then back up. a few feet each time. After the tires are cool you can stop. And if you just came off a wet slushy road or snow covered NEVER set your trailer brakes.

I've used wood ashes with success but I can see how carboard would work as well. The idea is to get some dry material between the tire and the ice. When the material soaks up the water/moisture, it forms an adhesive.

Here is a trick, lay your tire chains out in front of the tires, get them as close to the tread as possible, then try to move forward. You are witnessing why I have a love\hate relationship with autoshift transmissions. If this were a manual, you could probably feather the clutch and get it out, or get it rocking. Autoshifts when you are stuck like that are either engaged, or not engaged, which leads to what happened to you.

Forget sand, salt and cat litter. Take it from a Canadian ;-) Always carry a five gallon pail of clean WOOD ASHES (clean as in "free of nails"). A thin layer on the surface of the tires and over a couple of feet in front of the drive wheels will provide the traction required to get moving. IMPORTANT: Shove the ashes as far as you can under the tires and against the tire treads.

Without the extra weight sitting on the wheels it should help get out of the holes you dug with the tires. Use the shovel to clean the area and get rid of the ruts. Hook up to the trailer, don’t forget to lower the trailer first, and try again. The next time you are at the office ask for a manual shift
