If you guys haven't already started this, another option instead of aluminum sheet is Alumalite, or something similar. It's basically the aluminum version of cardboard, with a corrugated layer between thin aluminum sheets. It will be much more rigid and probably lighter (depending on thickness) than the solid sheet you'd end up using. I've always heard you can usually get it fairly easily locally by talking to sign shops. A lot of people use it for splitters and flat bottoms, so if you're keeping the panels flat ish, it'll probably be a great material for that. Just a thought.

1mm aluminum is thicker than you need. 26-28 Guage would probably be fine, especially if you add some bead-rolls for extra rigidity. Also the rear end should be pointy or teardrop shaped. When the back is truncated or flat, it creates a low pressure pocket that sucks the car rearward. Most people don't think about the back of the car when they think about aerodynamics, but how the air separates or comes off of the car is just as important as where it first meets the front of the car.

I love your dedication to making the Plaid faster. Rear lower control arms that adjust to have the tire sit flat to the ground near full suspension compression helped my Plaids launch. The Plaid motor has so much more HP potential, but it's limited by the cells voltage sag. I'm adding a high-C rate pack to mine in parallel with the OEM pack to beat your Plaids time with OEM interior. 😊
@PPekka
@PPekka Жыл бұрын
How many kWh does a single run pull? There could be a huge weight saving and power boosting for E-Roy if they made a custom batterypack from LiFePO4 cells or something like that and ditch the oem battery. If they sell the battery they could easily build a new one for that price. Need to have a brainiac to sort out all the safety systems that are included in the oem battery though.

@@PPekka I think LTO cells are more suited for loads like this. But ditching OEM battery will make this project an order of magnitude harder. You would need to change/reprogram/jailbreak motor controllers as they will not cooperate on custom battery without changes. A single run should not consume more than 1000KW * 10 seconds (1/360th of hour) = 2,77(7) KWH
@NightshiftCustom
@NightshiftCustom Жыл бұрын
@@darekmistrz4364 just need to add the LTO cells on top of the OEM pack as the LTO cells don't even need a BMS and will dump loads of power when needed and the oem pack will also keep the LTO's charged as they don't have much run time on them
@LukeLiveforphysics
@LukeLiveforphysics Жыл бұрын
@@PPekka It's just a couple kWh per run. The booster battery pack doesn't need to be large or heavy. 150C-rate cells exist for drone racing that enable the whole booster pack to be under 100lbs.

SEND THAT COP TO NZ!! We desperately need some common sense. The crazy thing is, decades ago when I was a lunatic on motorbikes cops would slap you over the forehead and say "don't let me see you out here again today!" and let you off. And we RESPECTED that, the thought of that cop catching us again and seeing that we were so ungrateful we threw his kindness in our face, it made us BEHAVE. I very cool female cop pulled me over more recently for 130kph in a 100kph area (used to be normal but now it's a prison sentence), she walked up to my window, said "bit fast back there sir, that's all I'm gonna say about it". Amazing policing, she made me WANT to obey the rules for a really really long time, I couldn't let myself be caught by her again. Respect 😊

From someone who races cars myself I really love what you have done to this Tesla as it was a idea I had a couple of years ago after watching this I just might do that with a skeleton cage all around the car, also the back wheels would be catching drag as they are really open, as your doing 1\4 mile runs I would just put some air directors on the side of the car to direct the air around your tyres instead of full wheel arches as the weight will start piling on again. It's all about directing the air away from the car rear end as it blows over and the air literally pulls the car backwards AKA drag, you rarely feel it but it is there! To combat this fit a roof vortex generator on the very back this will give you more downforce and reduce drag and at 20 dollars is a must do, also a rear diffuser underneath the rear of the car, not a fake one as the fins will also reduce drag. Try a front splitter that comes just of the floor so the air is directed around the car instead of being forced under the car, don't use boot spoiler! Suspension in soft setting with grippy tyres well help immensely which I think you already know. I'll be watching, good luck

Random thought. What about taller tires? That would give your some more top end and maybe tame the wheel spin at the launch

Yes, tufts of yarn are still, to this day, used in flight test. For example Virgin Galactic had them all over VMS Eve for the last flight. Even with the most advanced technology some times it just takes a piece of thread and duct tape to see what's going on...

Reminds me of that seen from Ford vs Ferrari where Miles puts yarn and tape all over the car and rips the computer out of it and proves the computer was wrong that the car was catching air lol.

If you want to make body panels for E-roy my suggestion would be to get acrylic "glass" (not actually made of glass but you still the technical term for the stuff) panels. Readily and cheaply available at pretty much any hobby store easy to work with and shape with a heat gun on low or hair dryer and a few hand tools. Quite strong, resilient and flexible as well.

or something lighter than acrylic, like lexan, you know the stuff that doesnt crack when you bend it like acrylic

@@ImWillsZX lexan (polycarbonate) would work and would be easier to shape/mold to the contours. The thinner it is the easier it will be for it to flutter in the wind. The aluminum would be more rigid but more work to contour.
