I stayed in Lisbon for a week after this and although I was recovering I thoroughly enjoyed it. The people were so kind , I watched Portugal reach the World Cup sat amongst the locals. It’s a city I’d actually enjoy to live in. This attack could happen anywhere in the world. I’ve been robbed in Barcelona, chased in Brussels. Bad People are everywhere. The men who attacked me were not Portuguese. It was a targeted assault near pink street purely because I was wearing a watch which was quite expensive. Love Portugal 🇵🇹

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Being from Lisbon myself, it's true that lately the nights in Lisbon have gotten more violent and dangerous in certain areas, so I would just advise anyone to be extra careful of your surroundings and the places you go to at night. Thankfully this are still more isolated cases than the current norm in our city. Glad to hear you didn't let this event change your plans and overlook of the city. Wish you a speedy recovery!

So terribly sorry for your experience. I’m in the usa and i have my family in Portugal. It’s a place very near and dear to my heart but unfortunately there are bad people everywhere, including Portugal. I love the positivity! We’ll b there in august if u’re down for a follow up, positive time. Although it seems having been in Algarve for 2 weeks, seems like u had a great visit overall. This reminds me so much of my random mugging and beating. I was going away to school, at university I had a job, and was walking to the bus at night after work. A bunch of guys attacked me, and beat me up, took everything I had and left me bruised and bloody crying in the middle of the street. I am just so glad they didn't sexually abuse me. There was nothing and nobody around. I took the bus home, and my roommate called the police, but I left school at that point - and didn't follow through with the police report. It changed my life for the worst. Unfortunately. I have made my entire life about PTSD now. I'm working on my PhD in Psychology researching the benefits of videogames on individuals with PTSD.

Daniel, i'm sorry about this! Glad you didn't let these incidents ruin your trip even more! I don't know if you went to the police or reported what happened to the authorities, but I want you to know that both the Portuguese and the Portuguese authorities do not let these cases pass in vain. You can and should report to the police what happened to you, even if you are no longer in Portugal, so that they can do justice to what happened to you and who knows, avoid this type of case! a big hug and don't be these people who don't make you feel welcome to Lisbon and Portugal!

Your attitude and positive outlook about all of this is amazing, but please make sure you take time to process what happened to you. If you need to scream, cry, vlog about it, talk to someone, take some time off etc. do you. Take care of yourself. Try not to push yourself too hard over the next few days. Most importantly, you’re going to hear people tell you, “I’ve been there and I’ve neverrr blah blah blah…”. Don’t let these people make you think YOU did anything wrong, or that you put yourself in the position for this to happen. We’re all so relieved that you’re such an amazing person to have survived this horrible ordeal. You are a survivor of violence. The world would be much darker without you in it.
