You probably won’t see this but I was on the same journey myself. 65kg starting out and sitting at a healthy 72kg now. Don’t over do it starting out and put unnecessary stress on yourself, start of simple by having a handful of nuts after each meal such as almonds peanuts and cashnews, these are incredibly high in Calories. When having your main meals throw some oil over the top, Oats every morning and don’t be afraid to splash in a healthy serving of honey or peanut butter. But most importantly enjoy the journey, I can only imagine how hard it must be to struggle with your body image in the public eye. Big fan, always have been lad 👍🏻

I totally agree not to over do it. I started doing that last month & i damaged all my tendons in my left arm & trapped a nerve in my back. My doctor said it should be better in a couple weeks. Its now been 4 & has only started to getting a little easier. Sadly I can't have nuts so this technique wouldnt work for me as I'm very allergic. Could do the oil thing & honey & oats tho. ^__^

Mate I can relate, I’m 24 and struggle to put any weight on. I nearly doubled my intake of calories a day and still no change. At this point I’m just waiting for my metabolism to slow down. Hopefully you’ll find a way.

I understand you Joe. I have the same problem, i'm currently 15 but back in December 2018 I was 38kg which was severely underweight for my age and I eat loads, I just don't put on the weight. Perhaps I should start working out more. Your an inspiration :)

I do gymnastics and over lockdown I haven’t been able to go and it’s cold so I can’t work out outside and so I have just been gaining more and more weight and I found it was easier to only treat myself with like McDonald’s or something on Fridays and then eating good during the week and I lost a lot of weight and I am very proud of myself ❤️❤️

I'm a not a guy, but I do have a crazy fast metabolism and definitely relate to a lot you said. I'm also trying to put on weight but I'm not on any strict diet rather I'm just trying to eat as much as I can during the day. For tips, try eating a large snack before bed, this means those extra calories can be stored as fat. Also have peanut butter with EVERYTHING lol, no but seriously peanut butter is very dense in calories, you could try adding it to smoothies. The app 'MyFitnessPal' is great and let's you personalise settings to fit your own goals. Hope this helps 😊

Hey Joe, I am a Clinical Dietitian by profession. In addition to increasing the intake of carbs and protein, try including calorie dense smoothie once per day! (500 ml whole milk + 200 g fruit + mixed nuts and seeds 2 tsp + PB - 1 tsp + 3-4 fresh dates as a sweetener) . ALL THE BEST inclining yourself towards better!! :)

It’s ok to be thinner (or larger). It’s also important to remember that our bodies naturally go through changes in life. Expect changes, and embrace them. If you want to move more, great - but don’t do it for the visual. Foods and bodies are not “bad” or “good” - they’re neutral.

As a 5' 10" teenager I got through around 8500 K-calories each day and I struggled to keep my weight above 9 stone 12 pounds (63 Kg or 138 lbs.) I had two breakfasts, a snack at 11 am, a 2-course meal at lunch, a snack (sometimes fish and chips) mid-afternoon, sandwiches and soup at tea-time (around 4:30 pm) and then a good dinner in the evening and a snack before bedtime (sometimes this would be a Chinese takeaway!) I did count calories and on some days this would go as high as 12,000 Kcal but I did train heavily then. I had an enormous appetite but I maintained a good body proportion until I reached the USA and a desk job at 40 years old. All-you-can-eat buffets were my weakness and a great restaurant near my home in Sacramento that offered steak, eggs and potatoes for breakfast at $7.00. I worked out and built some bulk but developed a middle-aged spread which has matured into a nice comfortable Santa Claus figure since my knees and my back have refused to cooperate. Joe, you can put on muscle but it takes a determined and progressive effort. You shouldn't worry so much about the diet as I believe your body will let you know when you need more fuel. The main obstacle that I found was life itself. If you can dedicate a good amount of time each day to body development then you will see results. Most folk are too busy making ends meet and keeping the family happy. Good luck.

Hey Joe, I’ve just started trying to understand nutrition a bit more. Always been active but never felt I was seeing results in the gym. Basically everything you think you know about diet is probably wrong is what I’ve learnt 🤣 If you’re not putting on weight then likely you’re not eating enough calories. I would suggest working out your macros, eating in a surplus, lifting heavy weights and really making sure that you’re hitting your protein goals as this will aid building lean muscle. I started learning by going on the macros inc website and doing a free macros check, they have a free ebook which is helpful 😀

Joe! The best piece of advice I can say about building mass is just keep filling yourself with protein (at least 30% of daily intake).. But more importantly, don’t wish your metabolism away, I was always exactly like you until I hit 30 and then in the first year, my body just decided it didn’t want to metabolise anymore. It’s the same for everyone I know in the situation!

Hi Joe. Good to hear that you want to make a positive change in your life. I have recently qualified as a fitness instructor and a personal trainer. My advice to you would be to consume more snacks throughout the day, such as nuts/yoghurts. It’s also important to remember to maintain the correct balance of protein and carbohydrates in your diet. I’d be happy to give you more advice to get you started on your journey👍

I started my fitness journey at 62kg and I’m 75kg now. I’ve always been the skinniest and shortest in my friendship group so it took years to build up my strength. If you ever need a bulk diet or fitness routine I’d be happy to send you one. We’re a similar body type and I’ve definitely been doing it long enough to realise all the things I’ve been doing wrong in the past 👍

You might not read this but I understand what you are going through about struggling to be particularly happy about weight from a female's perspective. I gave birth to a baby boy 4 weeks ago and I am so happy, life is perfect. However I was 9st 8lb when I first fell pregnant, pregnancy made me go up to 13st and now I've given birth I'm 12st 4, I feel I'm a healthy weight but my entire stomach is covered in bright red stretch marks and I still have a lot of rolls and bumps that I want to get rid of. I know that it's only been 4 weeks and it will take a while for me to drop it but I want to start going to baby swim classes for his benefit and I worry about wearing a swimming costume in front of others and stuff.. yeah it sounds weird. My son is the most important thing to me right now so I barely have time to think about my stomach but there's so much pressure for a woman who's recently given birth to lose weight because people think you're still pregnant. I'm telling myself that my new body is proof that my body can do incredible things and my stretch marks tell a story but sometimes I still find it hard and sometimes I still struggle but I love my son more than life itself so I wouldn't change anything 🥰 Sorry for the long story, I'm impressed if you're still reading 🤣 By speaking up you're doing an incredible thing Joe, you're helping many men out there open up so thank you 🥰

im 18, 5 ft 5, 54kg, and i row for my school. the ideal rower for my age is like 6ft and 65kg. i have a very fast metabolism. best food to have as a snack - bowl of porriage, made with whole milk and a banana, and best thing to drink, whole milk, all easy protein instead of red meats, or whatever you prefer :) xx

Try and use shakes - such as protein shakes etc, as they’ll increase your calorific intake and protein and any surplus of protein will turn into ‘fat’ and build your body shape etc

I'm old enough to remember film cameras. If we hadn't finished the film by the end of the summer holiday, we would take the remaining photos at Christmas. So, in January when the developed film came back there would be photos from the beach and then photos of the Christmas tree and wrapped presents. (OK, maybe that combination doesn't seem so strange to an Australian!)

My boyfriend is kind of on the same journey with your diet and a high metabolism and wanting to gain weight/muscle mass. He just eats a lot, like a lot of oats in the morning (150grams) and a shake at night with protein powder. And a plant based diet is the best for you, gives you the most good stuff and vitamins and micro's and protein, and the least of the bad stuff that is in meat and dairy. Just eat a lot of beans and veggies and whole grains and whole foods :)
